Tage Thompson Reflects On Teammates Lack Of Response After Noesen Hit One of the many low points of the Buffalo Sabres 2024-25 season was the lack of response to the hit on leading scorer Tage Thompson by New Jersey forward Stefan Noesen. Thompson was laid out by Noesen early in the third period of the Sabres 4-3 win over the Devils on February 2nd. Noesen was given a match penalty and game misconduct, but none of the players on the ice at the time of the hit or in the subsequent remaining 15 minutes responded to the hit, something that Thompson reflected on with reporter Andy Strickland. 2:20 Now Playing Paused Ad Playing

Two Spartans help Team USA end 92 year drought with World Championship gold medal win

This past weekend, Team USA did something for the first time in 92 years, winning the IIHF World Championship gold medal. Tage Thompson's overtime goal to beat Switzerland, 1-0, was the clincher in getting the United States their first world title since 1933. In winning the title, the Americans were aided by two current Spartans, who both have a history of doing great things within the USA hockey landscape. First, behind the bench assisting head coach Ryan Warsofsky, was MSU head coach Adam Nightingale, bringing his expertise to the Americans bench. Nightingale was joined by his star forward, and 2025 Hobey Baker Award winner, Isaac Howard. Howard was a member of USA's 2024 World Junior Championship gold medal team, and now, he got to bring home gold in the senior world championship. Howard got to taste the professional action in four games throughout the tournament, the most of any college player that made the trip, where he recorded an assist. Need a break? Thompson Leads USA To World Championship Win

The 2025 IIHF World Championships turned out to be historic for the United States, as the Americans got past host Sweden to get the final against Switzerland and won in dramatic fashion, as Buffalo Sabres forward Tage Thompson scored the golden goal early in overtime to give Team USA a 1-0 victory and their first World Championship gold medal since 1933. Thompson tied for the club lead in the tournament with six goals, which included a hat trick and game winner against Norway in the preliminary round. The Sabres forward said last month after the end of the regular season that after being invited as an injury replacement for the NHL Four Nation Face-Off, that he wanted to go to the Worlds to stay on USA Hockey's radar for the upcoming Olympics in Milano/Cortina next February. "Anytime you throw on that USA jersey, it's a huge honor, so to be able to go over there and compete for something will be exciting." After losing to Canada at Four Nations, Team USA is likely to be going through some roster changes. Veterans like Brock Nelson, Vincent Trocheck, and Chris Krieder could be left off the club in favor of dynamic scorers like Thompson, Montreal's Cole Caufield, and Utah's Logan Cooley and Clayton Keller. Lightning's J.J. Moser, Switzerland fall short in 1-0 overtime loss to USA in gold medal game

Mandatory Credit: Kyle Ross-Imagn Images USA hockey claimed its first gold medal at the IIHF World Championship since 1933 with a 1-0 overtime victory over Switzerland. Tage Thompson, a current forward for the Buffalo Sabres and former first-round pick by the St. Louis Blues in 2016, scored the only goal of the game in overtime. He fired a wrist shot past Swiss goalie Leonardo Genoni's blocker to seal the win for Team USA. Logan Cooley and Brady Skjei picked up assists on the play. Lightning defenseman J.J. Moser was a steady presence for Switzerland throughout the tournament, playing in all nine games. He finished with one goal, five assists, and a plus-8 rating, helping lead the team to another strong showing. Switzerland has won silver three times in 2013, 2018, and most recently in 2024 but has never won gold. Advertisement 'We have a good consistency now over the past couple of years of the same guys coming in,' Moser said ahead of their championship matchup. 'We have a chemistry in the team and also take our experiences from the past years, and that kind of gets us more confidence and more calmness in those situations.' The score was the first ever 1-0 overtime game for the gold medal.
