Merdeka Daily News journalist Jee Cheng Yee, 35, said the cash contribution would help ease the burden of her medical and treatment expenses. The mother of three – aged eight, four, and 11 months – shared that she developed anaemia following caesarean sections during the birth of her children. 'I'm very grateful to the Sabah Journalists Association and the Sandakan Media Association for assisting me with the Tabung Kasih@HAWANA application process,' said Jee, who has been a journalist for 10 years and is currently based in Sandakan. 'I hope this kind of assistance can reach and support more journalists who are in need,' she said when met at her residence in Taman Yeng Seng here. Also present at the visit were Malaysian National News Agency's (Bernama) head of Management Services and Finance, Sharifah Zaini Syed Zain, and head of Corporate Affairs, Mariati Mohd Arif. Meanwhile, Teo said a total of 19 media practitioners in Sabah have benefited from the Tabung Kasih@HAWANA initiative to date. She added that RM1 million has been allocated for the fund this year, expressing hope that more media personnel in need would receive the assistance. 'We will consider all applications and determine the donation amount based on each individual's circumstances,' she said. The Tabung Kasih@HAWANA initiative reflects the spirit of Malaysia MADANI by upholding values of compassion and care, particularly for media practitioners who have long contributed to society but are now facing life or health challenges. The fund was established as a Communications Ministry initiative and implemented through Bernama to support serving and retired journalists and other media practitioners who are facing hardships or financial difficulties. To date, a total of 442 media practitioners nationwide have benefited from the initiative, with contributions amounting to RM1.2 million. – Bernama

Tabung Kasih@HAWANA Benefits Three More Recipients

GENERAL KUALA LUMPUR, June 14 (Bernama) -- Tabung Kasih@HAWANA continues to demonstrate its commitment to the welfare of media practitioners as three more recipients benefitted from the initiative today. The Star news editor Ng Li Yiao, 56, who is battling breast cancer, said that such donations make her feel appreciated after contributing to the field of journalism over the past 31 years. 'This donation not only will help with covering my medical expenses but also with my daily needs because people who are ill require nutritious food, and we know that nutritious food is expensive. "This assistance means a lot to me as a single mother who is raising twins, currently studying at university," she said after receiving the Tabung Kasih@HAWANA donation today. The Tabung Kasih@HAWANA contribution was presented by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim at the climax event of National Journalists' Day (HAWANA) 2025 at the World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur (WTCKL) today. Also present at the event were Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Federal Territories) Datuk Seri Dr Zaliha Mustafa and Deputy Communications Minister Teo Nie Ching. Meanwhile, Rusmin Fadzil, 62 said the donation received will help her to buy necessities when she is admitted to the ward for treatment of the skin disease, TTP (thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura), that she is facing. "Such contributions are important for media practitioners who are no longer working and have no source of income. With such a contribution, it can help lighten my financial burden.

Tabung Kasih@HAWANA Inspires Seniman To Set Up Artistes Welfare Fund

KUALA LUMPUR, June 13 (Bernama) -- The Malaysian Artistes Association (Seniman) views the success of Tabung Kasih@HAWANA as a model worth emulating to safeguard the welfare of local artistes and arts industry practitioners. Its president, Rozaidi Abdul Jamil, better known as Zed Zaidi, said the HAWANA fund is an inclusive initiative that can provide ongoing benefits to media practitioners. 'The successful establishment of a fund to look after the welfare of media practitioners has inspired Seniman to create a similar fund for local artistes. 'At the moment, we do not yet have a welfare fund, but under the Malaysia Film Association Coalition (Gafema), we are planning to establish a special fund similar to Tabung Kasih@HAWANA to protect the welfare of those in the arts industry,' he said when met at the HAWANA 2025 Carnival at Sunway Putra Mall here today. Zed Zaidi also sees potential collaboration between Seniman and the National Journalists' Day (HAWANA) platform through MyCheck Malaysia (Bernama's fact-checking unit) and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission to educate artistes on efforts to combat false information. 'This is my first time hearing about MyCheck Malaysia. It has the potential to become one of the platforms for special programmes with celebrities as agents to create awareness for the public,' he said. He said apart from celebrities, Seniman also comprises influencers who often lack clear guidelines for information sharing. 'Sometimes when they share something, it may be based on facts but gets distorted until it turns into falsehood, which the public may then perceive as fact. This contributes to the spread of fake news and misinformation. 'Therefore, we can combine suitable programmes, including workshops or awareness sessions involving the media to educate the public about the importance of fact-checking,' he said.

Tabung Kasih@HAWANA initiative has benefited 405 media practitioners

PUTRAJAYA: A total of 405 media practitioners nationwide have benefited from the Tabung Kasih@HAWANA initiative since its launch in conjunction with the National Journalists' Day (HAWANA) in 2023. Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil said more media practitioners are being targeted for assistance in conjunction with the highlight of the HAWANA 2025 celebration at the World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur (WTC KL) on Saturday (June 14). 'We will assist not only more people but also those who had previously received the contribution. 'If there is anyone we need to reach out to and provide additional assistance, I will ask that this matter be looked into,' he said. He told reporters this after presenting the Tabung Kasih@HAWANA contribution to News Straits Times (NST) photo editor Ikhwan Munir, 50, who is undergoing treatment for colorectal cancer at Putrajaya Hospital, here today. Also present were Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) chief executive officer Datin Paduka Nur-ul Afida Kamaludin and Media Prima Group managing editor Jasbant Singh. The fund is an initiative by the Communications Ministry and implemented by Bernama. Fahmi said that, as such, Bernama would continue to monitor the needs of Ikhwan, who has two children aged seven and 23. 'Ikhwan has been battling health issues over the past few weeks, so his wife can't work. Insya-Allah, Bernama will continue to monitor (his situation) to see if we need to provide any more assistance to him after this,' he said. In another development, Fahmi said he also used the opportunity to get feedback from the Putrajaya Hospital authorities regarding telecommunication coverage and Internet access at the health facility. 'They are satisfied, though they did say there is a small problem with one of the telecommunication service providers (telcos) over at the new wing. So, I have asked this telco to come and help optimise their services,' he said.
