Nigerian agency shuts down France, Belgium, Italy visa processing center
A Nigerian agency, the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has sealed off the visa processing center for France, Belgium, and Italy in Abuja due to alleged consumer rights violations. The FCCPC has sealed the visa application center for France, Belgium, and Italy in Abuja due to alleged consumer rights violations. Complaints included excessive fees, delays, and lack of clear refund and application procedure information. The commission seeks resolution and improved consumer services despite temporary disruptions caused by the closure. The action follows numerous complaints from Nigerian applicants accusing the visa processing center of charging excessive fees, causing prolonged delays, and failing to provide clear information on application procedures and refund policies. The center, operated by TLScontact, a Teleperformance company responsible for handling Schengen visa applications, had allegedly failed to comply with Nigeria's consumer protection laws. FCCPC Executive Vice Chairman, Babatunde Irukera stated that the Commission would sanction service providers who violate consumer rights, regardless of their international affiliations. The closure is expected to disrupt visa application processes temporarily, but the FCCPC is willing to work with the parties to resolve the issues and ensure that transparent and consumer-friendly services resume. Visa centre penalty backstory According to Boladale Adeyinka, director of surveillance and investigations at the FCCPC, the center obstructed an investigation into consumer complaints and conducted services deemed "inimical to consumers' welfare." The FCCPC's attempt to serve a summons to TLS staff escalated into further conflict. Adeyinka stated, " On the 25th of March 2025, based on a consumer complaint, a letter was served on them to address the consumer complaint... The officers of TLS, rather than receive the consumer complaint, proceeded to assault our officers who were conducting the lawful duty of protecting and implementing the provisions of the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Act (FCCPA)." Adeyinka warned that this behavior carries serious consequences, stating, " Section 33 stipulates that any person who... fails or refuses to appear before the commission... commits an offence and is liable... to imprisonment for a term not exceeding three years or a fine not exceeding N20 million."

Belgium Opens New Visa Application Center in Rabat
Doha – Belgium inaugurated on Thursday a new center for processing visa applications in Rabat. The facility, located at TLS-Millenium Business Centre, complements an existing center in Casablanca, expanding services for Moroccan visa applicants. The opening ceremony was attended by several officials, including Joris Salden, Director General of Consular Affairs for Belgium's Federal Public Service for Foreign Affairs, Foreign Trade and Development Cooperation, along with Gilles Heyvaert, Belgium's Ambassador to Morocco, and Bassem Missaoui, TLS Contact's Director General for North and West Africa. In his address, Salden noted that the new center represents an important step in improving access to consular services. He stated that his mission within consular diplomacy is to ensure transparent, professional, reliable, and accessible service. 'This center aligns perfectly with our strategy to bring our services closer to citizens,' Salden said. He explained that the Rabat TLS center will initially be dedicated exclusively to students to simplify the visa application process for those pursuing education in Belgium. 'We are pleased to welcome these students for high-quality training in Belgium, which helps strengthen the historical ties between our two countries,' he added. Previously, students enrolled in higher education programs in Belgium had to visit the embassy in Rabat to complete a study questionnaire and travel to Casablanca to submit their applications. Now, students can complete all procedures in Rabat on the same day: file submission at TLS Rabat, followed by a questionnaire at the Belgian Embassy. 'From now on, a single procedure will be sufficient, which represents a significant simplification of the process,' Salden pointed out. He went on to explain that implementing a digitalization system allows for more efficient processing of applications, while requiring a new work approach based on dedicated software and digital infrastructure. Ambassador Heyvaert stated that this initiative aims 'above all to guarantee quality services and ensure applications are processed within reasonable timeframes.' The ambassador noted that 'Morocco is a strategic country for Belgium, just as Belgium holds a strategic position for Morocco,' continuing that visa policy 'is part of the relationship framework that helps strengthen ties between the two countries.' Missaoui of TLS Contact recalled that since 2016, TLS has proudly worked with Belgium to collect visa applications, initially in Casablanca. 'Today marks an expansion of operations,' he said. The company is committed to ensuring optimal reception conditions that match the high service standards and quality of welcome it intends to offer visa applicants, Missaoui affirmed. The Belgian Embassy in Morocco processes more than 20,000 visa applications annually, a figure that continues to rise. Read also: France Expands Consular Services to Morocco's Southern Provinces

CSC Launches Domain Control Validation as a Service, Streamlining Certificate Life Cycle Management
By Business Wire Published on May 30, 2025, 09:33 IST Wilmington, Del., United States: CSC, an enterprise-class domain security provider and world leader in domain management, brand protection, and anti-fraud solutions, today announces the launch of Domain Control Validation as a Service (DCVaaS), a unique offering designed to simplify and expedite secure sockets layer (SSL)/transport layer security (TLS) certificate validation processes for all its CSC Trusted Secure digital certificate clients. DCVaaS empowers users with a streamlined, centralized solution for domain control validation, eliminating the need for repetitive validations during certificate renewals. It significantly reduces the time and effort required to manage certificate life cycles—making it an essential tool as the industry moves toward shorter certificate validity periods. This launch comes at a critical time as the digital certificate industry evolves. Notably, the CA/Browser Forum has announced that starting March 2026, certificate lifetimes and domain control validation (DCV) re-use periods will be reduced to 200 days. These will reduce annually, ultimately reaching a lifetime of just 47 days and a DCV re-use period of 10 days by 2029. Additionally, WHOIS email validation will be discontinued on July 15, 2025. While the changes are aimed at enhancing security, and increasing agility, they mandate the need for alternative and future-ready validation solutions that are real-time, scalable, and standards compliant. Key benefits of DCVaaS include: Simplified validation workflows: One-time validation removes redundancy and improves efficiency. One-time validation removes redundancy and improves efficiency. Reduced administrative burden: Centralized management of validation records means fewer manual tasks. Centralized management of validation records means fewer manual tasks. Future-proofing against industry changes: Designed to support shorter certificate lifetimes and the deprecation of WHOIS email validation. 'Issuing digital certificates involves specific processes and a considerable amount of work. When it comes to renewals, the same steps need to be repeated. DCVaaS addresses a major pain point in certificate management—repetitive and time-consuming validations,' says Mark Flegg, senior director of Technology, CSC Security Products and Services. 'DCVaaS can reduce processing time by more than half, allowing companies to deploy certificates more quickly than ever before. As WHOIS email validation sunsets and certificate lifespans continue to shrink, DCVaaS helps organizations stay compliant, agile, and ahead of the curve.' Leader of Somerville MS-13 ‘clique' pleads guilty to 2010 murder
A local leader in the transnational MS-13 gang, who is already serving a lengthy prison sentence, pleaded guilty on Thursday to killing a man in Chelsea in 2010, federal prosecutors announced. Jose Vasquez, 31, pleaded guilty to a single count of violent crime in aid of racketeering, U.S. Attorney for Massachusetts Leah Foley said in a statement. He will be sentenced on June 30. Vazquez is already serving a 212-month (17 years and 8 months) prison sentence for racketeering conspiracy, or RICO, handed down in 2018. At around 7:10 p.m. on Dec. 18, 2010, police responded to a 911 call under the Fifth Street on-ramp to Route 1 in Chelsea. There, they found a 28-year-old man with about 10 stab wounds to his head, back and chest. The man was brought to a hospital, where he died of his wounds, Foley's office said. A recent reexamination of evidence collected in the investigation of the man's death pointed to members of MS-13, including Vasquez, Foley's office said. He was a member and local leader of the Trece Locos Salvatrucha, or TLS, clique of MS-13 operating in Somerville. Prosecutors say he 'personally participated in racketeering activity and acts of violence' on behalf of the gang. In the week leading up to the killing, Vasquez and other members of the gang conspired to murder the man because they believed he was a member of a rival gang, Foley's office said. On the day of the murder, Vasquez and others picked up the man at a McDonald's in Allston and drove him to a secluded area in Chelsea under the highway. There, an MS-13 member hit him in the head with a rock and another stabbed him with a machete. Vasquez stabbed the man with a knife — his palm print was identified on the handle of a kitchen knife found at the scene. The man's blood was also found on the knife, Foley's office said. Investigators obtained a recording of an MS-13 meeting from roughly six weeks after the murder, on Jan. 27, 2011, where one gang member acknowledges his participation in the crime and is disciplined for leaving Massachusetts after the killing without the gang's permission. Vasquez was identified as being present, prosecutors say. The charge of violent crime in aid of racketeering carries a sentence of up to life in prison.
