Tripura rights panel notice to NHIDCL over compensation delay

Agartala: The Tripura Human Rights Commission (THRC) has issued a notice to National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Ltd (NHIDCL), directing it to submit a report for the delay in payment of compensation. Despite land acquisition over seven years ago for a national highway project, NHIDCL did not pay due compensation to 20 families in Jampui Hills of North Tripura, along the Tripura-Mizoram border. Based on a media report, THRC chairperson Justice Arindam Lodh took cognisance of the case and served notice. According to the report, NHIDCL acquired land between June 25, 2018, and Feb 4, 2019, for the construction of National Highways 44A and 313. Despite the final compensation awards being issued in Jan 2021, the affected families have still not received any payment. "Despite the absence of any legal dispute or ownership issue, the compensation has not been released, leaving the families in distress. NHIDCL's repeated deferrals citing project alignment changes, contractor issues, and a new Detailed Project Report are unjustified," Justice Lodh said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch vàng CFDs với mức chênh lệch giá thấp nhất IC Markets Đăng ký Undo The sub-divisional magistrate of Kanchanpur already completed the assessment and forwarded it to the land acquisition authority. Yet, NHIDCL has withheld the payment without any valid grounds. Terming the prolonged delay a clear violation of human rights, THRC said the affected landowners have been subjected to harassment and deprivation of their legitimate entitlements. Sources say the land acquisition and compensation process was completed, and notifications were issued.

Tripura Cong urges rights panel to protect its minority leader

Agartala: The Tripura Pradesh Congress Committee sought protection from the Tripura Human Rights Commission (THRC) for its leader, Md Shahjahan Islam, who is on the run to evade arrest following controversy over his alleged derogatory remarks against the chief minister earlier this week. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Congress president Asish Kumar Saha said a party delegation met chairman THRC, Justice Arindam Lodh, on Thursday and alleged serious human rights violations against Shahjahan's family and other minority families living in the Shantipara area of the city. Congress urged the commission to ensure the safety and security of the residents. They complained that instead of apprehending the main accused, East Agartala Police arrested Shahjahan's elderly father and brother, who were unaware of the controversial episode, and were sent to judicial custody until June 23. Saha alleged that some BJP workers were hatching a conspiracy to evict Shahjahan and other minority families. He added that local leaders had also issued an ultimatum to the entire minority community in the area to leave Shantipara as soon as possible if they wanted to save their lives. Tripura Police on Monday arrested the father and brother of Shahjahan Islam for his comments against CM Manik Saha, the state govt, and other BJP leaders in connection with the alleged obstruction of the celebration of Eid-al-Adha on June 7. Shahjahan, in a Facebook live, protested an incident that occurred on the day of the Eid celebration, where some miscreants pulled the beard of a 70-year-old man for celebrating Eid in Amarpur under Tripura's Gomati district. Congress leaders, however, alleged that a group of miscreants backed by BJP attacked the residence of Shahjahan Islam at Shantipara with firearms and assaulted his parents and wife, and vandalised the house. BJP's state minority morcha president and former minister Billal Mia filed a complaint against Md Sahajan Islam at West Agartala police station for his statement against the chief minister on social media.

Rights panel asks Tripura DGP to assist man stranded in Malaysia

Agartala: The Tripura Human Rights Commission (THRC) has instructed the DGP to provide a comprehensive investigation report by June 16 regarding a Tripura citizen currently stranded in Malaysia with an expired tourist visa. The DGP has been tasked by the commission to take appropriate measures to assist the victim, Binoy Das, following a thorough investigation. The THRC's directive came after receiving a formal complaint from Satya Prakash Mishra, a Jharkhand resident, who submitted the petition for Binoy Das from Agartala, West Tripura. The case is classified under 'exploitation of Indian labourers in foreign countries'. The petitioner states that Das was enticed to Malaysia by an organisation allegedly connected to ISKM, Pondicherry, with assurances of enhanced employment prospects and increased earnings. His tourist visa lapsed approximately a year ago, and despite assurances of legalising his stay to enable him to work and support his unwell father financially, the promises remained unfulfilled. The commission's statement reveals that the petitioner's brother, Satyam Chaudhury, encountered similar difficulties with the same organisation. However, he returned to India in Nov 2023 through the assistance of the Indian High Commission in Malaysia. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Cặp EUR/USD: Đà Tăng? "Das has been in constant touch with the complainant since then, expressing growing anxiety and a sense of helplessness," the order noted. He has not received his promised compensation and lives under the constant threat of arrest as an unauthorised immigrant. The petitioner has provided evidence relating to Das's situation, indicating a systematic pattern of exploitation by certain India-based organisations that deceive vulnerable people with false opportunities abroad before abandoning them. THRC has sent the complaint and supporting documents to the DGP, requesting verification of the case's legitimacy, stating, "Let the DGP conduct an inquiry and submit a report by the next date. If the claims are substantiated, appropriate action may be initiated for the victim's repatriation. The case is scheduled to be taken up after three weeks."
