Dublin strike eight goals to book quarter-final place, Kerry and Galway also progress

HANNAH TYRRELL AND Kate Sullivan both grabbed three goals apiece at Clann Mhuire GFC on Sunday as Dublin booked their spot in the TG4 All-Ireland senior football championship quarter-finals with an emphatic Group 4 victory over Leitrim. On a day when her Na Fianna club-mate Eilish O'Dowd was coming face-to-face with her sister Laura – as well as their cousin Dearbhaile Beirne, a star of domestic women's soccer with Peamount United – Tyrrell helped herself to an outstanding tally of 3-7 for the Jackies. The game was due to take place on Saturday before the original venue of Parnell Park was deemed unplayable. After Sullivan completed an opening period hat-trick with goals in the 27th and 29th minutes, Niamh Hetherton also rattled the net to guide Dublin towards an unassailable 4-12 to 0-4 interval cushion. Although Leitrim were playing with the aid of a breeze on the resumption, their Leinster rivals maintained a ruthless streak in front of the posts in the second half. Holders Kerry are safely through to the quarter-finals. the Kingdom got the better of Cork at Supervalu Páirc Uí Chaoimh on Saturday to book their place in the last eight. 2024 runners-up Galway are safely through, and also as table-toppers, following their victory over Donegal in Lifford. In Group 3, Meath got the better of Kildare to also make it through. Kerry, despite a second minute goal from Niamh Ní Chonchúir, had to come from behind to achieve victory, with goals from Aine O'Sullivan and Katie Quirke helping Cork lead by 2-6 to 1-1 having played with the wind. Kerry, though, took over after the restart and outscored their neighbours by 4-4 to 0-3 after the restart, with Siofra O'Shea (two), Danielle O'Leary and Rachel Dwyer getting the goals as they ran out 5-7 to 2-9 winners. Kerry are now certain of a home quarter final but Cork must travel to Mayo next weekend to keep their season alive. Galway also booked a home quarter-final thanks to a 1-11 to 1-2 win over Donegal in Lifford. They laid the foundation for victory in the opening half when a goal from Ailbhe Davoren helped them to a 1-2 to 0-0 interval lead, before pushing the advantage out to nine points after the restart. Donegal, who travel to Tipperary next week to determine the group runners-up, finished strongly. Susanne White pointed a free before assisting in their goal which was finished to the net by Mia Bennett. Advertisement Meath also advanced to the last eight when they edged out Kildare by 0-7 to 0-4 at Manguard Park in another game impacted by the bad weather. The sides were level at 0-2 apiece at the break before Meath got on top with Emma Duggan taking her haul to 0-5 to book their quarter-final spot, with Kildare heading to Armagh next weekend with a quarter-final spot on the line. Meanwhile, the eight quarter-finalists in the All-Ireland Intermediate Championship have been confirmed, with a draw to take place on Monday morning to confirm the last eight pairing. Table-toppers Laois are joined in the knockout phase from Group 1 by Fermanagh, who defeated Roscommon by 4-10 to 3-9. Two goals from Eimear Smyth and one apiece from Molly McGloin and Bronagh Smyth paved the way for last year's All-Ireland junior champions who led by 4-2 to 1-5 at the interval. Tyrone defeated Westmeath by 6-11 to 0-7 to top Group 2, with Westmeath also advancing in second place. Last year's All-Ireland IFC finalists Tyrone led by 2-4 to 0-4 at the break thanks to goals from Caitlin Campbell and Aoibhinn McHugh, while a brace of penalties from Sorcha Gormley and further goals from Niamh O'Neill and Aoife Horisk wrapped up a big win. Hannah Tyrrell and kate Sullivan fire Dubs to emphatic Leitrim win

Hannah Tyrrell and Kate Sullivan grabbed three goals apiece at Clann Mhuire GFC on Sunday as Dublin booked their spot in the TG4 All-Ireland senior football championship quarter-finals with an emphatic Group 4 victory over Leitrim. On a day when her Na Fianna club-mate Eilish O'Dowd was coming face to face with her sister Laura – as well as their cousin Dearbhaile Beirne, who plays soccer with Peamount United – Tyrrell helped herself to an outstanding tally of 3-07 for the Jackies. In a game that was due to take place on Saturday before the original venue of Parnell Park was deemed unplayable, Dublin hit the ground running with early points from Tyrrell and Chloe Darby. Leitrim subsequently opened their account with a successful free courtesy of marauding goalkeeper Michelle Guckian, only for Dublin to immediately respond with Sullivan's maiden goal of the contest on eight minutes. Aiming to improve on last weekend's draw with Waterford, the Jackies created further daylight between themselves and their Connacht counterparts with unanswered points by Tyrrell (two), Sullivan and Niamh Hetherton. While Leitrim registered back-to-back points through Leah Fox and Muireann Devaney (free), Dublin continued to attack with extreme confidence. After Sullivan completed an opening period hat-trick with goals in the 27th and 29th minutes, Hetherton also rattled the net to guide Dublin towards an unassailable 4-12 to 0-04 interval cushion. Although Leitrim were playing with the aid of a breeze on the resumption, their Leinster rivals maintained a ruthless streak in front of the posts. Supplementing points from Hetherton and Carla Rowe – who was playing on her home club pitch – Tyrrell fired home two goals in the space of four minutes to further underline Dublin's supremacy. Fox found the range for Leitrim on a brace of occasions during the third-quarter, but with Rowe bagging an impressive 1-01 salvo, Dublin remained in the driving seat. Vivienne Egan did contribute Leitrim's seventh point as the final whistle approached, but with just over three minutes of normal time to play, Tyrrell completed a hat-trick of her own by converting her second penalty of the second half. As a result of this win, Waterford will need to record an even more comprehensive triumph at the expense of Leitrim next weekend in order to finish at the Group 4 summit. From a Leitrim perspective, a victory is required from that home encounter with the Deise to avoid a relegation play-off. Scorers – Dublin: H Tyrrell 3-07 (2-00 pen, 1f), K Sullivan 3-01, N Hetherton 1-04, C Rowe 1-03 (1f), J Tobin, S McIntyre, C Darby 0-01 each. 'I think we can hurt a few teams in championship' - Leitrim's Leah Fox

Leitrim's Leah Fox is confident they can make an impact as they return to the TG4 All-Ireland SFC title race for the first time since 2010. It isn't every day that you come up against your former inter-county colleague, but that is set to be the case for Leah Fox and a host of her Leitrim team-mates this afternoon. Back in the early months of 2020 – before the competition was ultimately cancelled owing to the Covid-19 pandemic – Glencar Manorhamilton attacker Fox played alongside Eilish O'Dowd in three of Leitrim's games in Division 4 of the Lidl National Football League. O'Dowd's older sister Laura also featured for the O'Rourke County during this period, but they will now find themselves in opposite camps for today's TG4 All-Ireland senior football championship Group 4 clash between Dublin and Leitrim at Parnell Park (throw-in 2pm). After completing an inter-county transfer to Dublin in January 2023, Eilish helped the Jackies to claim the top-tier Brendan Martin Cup with a superb final victory over Kerry at Croke Park in August of the same year. The elder O'Dowd, Fox, team skipper Michelle Guckian and a host of others from her time in the Leitrim set-up went on to win a TG4 All-Ireland intermediate football championship title 12 months later, which helped to make today's group meeting with Dublin possible. "I suppose it will be a unique experience for Laura and Eilish. Two great players and I'm sure hopefully they'll both be going as hard as they can, and whichever team plays best is going to win. Definitely it's a special occasion for Laura and Eilish, and their whole family. It's just unique. Something that they'll look back on in years to come," Fox acknowledged. "She [Eilish] was there for the first year I joined. She's an unbelievable player, a serious athlete and she's absolutely thriving up in Dublin now. We'll have our work cut out to keep tabs on her, along with the rest of the Dublin girls. It will be something different and a good occasion." Whereas Dublin kick-started their All-Ireland campaign for 2025 with a draw (1-13 apiece) against Waterford in Dungarvan last Sunday, today's game will see Leitrim beginning their Brendan Martin Cup odyssey in earnest. A home encounter with the Deise is also pencilled in for June 21 at Avant Money Páirc Seán Mac Diarmada in Carrick-on-Shannon as the O'Rourke women embark on their first season in the All-Ireland senior championship since 2010. The Jackies ended that year by winning the Brendan Martin Cup for the first time in their history and with six crowns now to their name, they have established themselves as one of the top ladies football sides in the country. A third place finish in Division 1 of the Lidl NFL and a TG4 Munster senior football championship final appearance has also shown that Waterford mean business in 2025, but Fox is extremely optimistic Leitrim can leave their imprint on this year's competition. "Dublin are a serious team, they're always there or thereabouts. They've got very good players all across the pitch. It will be nice to test yourself against one of the top two or three. I suppose we just need to focus on our own performance, we've our own goals. "We have a tough group, Waterford and Dublin. Especially Waterford are going really well this year, but I think we can hurt a few teams in the championship. It's just waiting and hoping that we get a performance in every game we play. There is no reason why we can't pick up a win or two." While Fox has started the last five games Leitrim have played this year – including TG4 Connacht senior football championship duels with Mayo and Galway – injury curtailed her involvement to a certain extent in 2024. After registering an outstanding haul of 9-13 in eight games during the county's NFL Division 4 campaign, a knee issue restricted Fox to a substitutes' role in their TG4 Connacht intermediate football championship final success over Roscommon in May. She later missed All-Ireland group stage games against Tyrone and Wicklow, before returning to score a goal off the bench when Leitrim defeated Roscommon for a second time in an All-Ireland intermediate quarter-final. Fox was then used as a substitute when Jonny Garrity's side overcame Wexford at the penultimate phase of the competition at Parnell Park and she played the final 23 minutes when Leitrim secured the Mary Quinn Memorial Cup with an outstanding 3-11 to 3-10 win over Tyrone at Croke Park on August 4, 2024. "It was such an amazing day. I got injured last year after the league semi-final and I missed most of the championship. It was really special, but just really grateful that I could play some part in it. It wasn't looking like I could for a lot of the year. "I was only four I think when they won it last [2007], but it gives you people to look up to. When you've the likes of Michelle Guckian and Charlene Tyrrell on our team, Clare Owens. All these younger girls now are looking up to them and hopefully it won't be too long until Leitrim are back in Croke Park again." Even leaving aside her achievements with Leitrim, Fox has become accustomed to success in recent years. In addition to winning five senior county championship titles on the bounce with Glencar Manorhamilton (2020-2024), she also won the 2020 Connacht intermediate championship title with her club – albeit their final victory against Geevagh actually took place in June 2021. Fox has also been part of some memorable triumphs at colleges level with DCU Dochas Eireann, winning three AIG O'Connor Cup titles in succession from 2023 to 2025. Although she has now finished up in DCU (where she was studying secondary school teaching), she reflects fondly on her time in the capital-based institution. "I've four years done in DCU, but it's a time I really look back on with fond memories. It's an amazing college with really good people involved in the GAA sector of it. They look after you really well and it was amazing. Never mind win three in-a-row, but one O'Connor Cup was so special," Fox added. "It's just such a unique opportunity, college football, and you make so many great friends. I had a great few years in DCU and definitely three O'Connor Cups is something that is very special."

Meath and Armagh share the spoils after dramatic draw, Galway ease to opening win

Meath 3-8 Armagh 2-11 Deniese O'Flaherty reports from Páirc Tailteann MEATH CAME FROM four points down with three minutes remaining to earn a dramatic draw against Armagh in their opening game in Group 3 of the TG4 All-Ireland SFC. Caroline O'Hanlon kicked over a free in the 57th minute to extend Armagh's lead to four points but credit to Meath, they dug in at the end. A goal from substitute Shauna Ennis and then a point from Vikki Wall earned Shane McCormack's side a draw. Kelly Mallon opened the scoring inside the second minute of play. Meath edged ahead after four minutes before three points in a row, including a lovely score from Niamh Reel, saw Armagh go ahead by two in the seventh minute. Meath were back in front in the 12th minute when Wall found the back of the net with a fine finish. Ciara Smyth followed that up with a neat point. Down the other end, Meath 'keeper Robyn Murray pulled off a good save to deny Aoife McCoy, the ball came back out to Niamh Henderson and she fired over. McCoy found the back of the net in the 21st minute with an excellent strike to put Armagh back ahead. There were two in it minutes later when Reel kicked over a free. Wall played the ball to Aoibhín Cleary in the 27th minute and she fired a brilliant strike to the net. On the stroke of half-time, another Reel free levelled matters for the third time — Meath 2-4 Armagh 1-7. Mallon and Duggan (free) traded points in the early exchanges of the second half. An excellent point from Clery put Meath ahead in the 39th minute. Minutes later, Niamh Coleman played the ball to Mallon and she fired low to the net. Reel hit over her fourth free of the game to extend Armagh's lead to four in the 43rd minute. Advertisement It was now advantage Armagh and Meath worked hard to get back into the game but the Orchard County's defence stood firm. Duggan hit over a much-needed score from a free in the 47th minute to put three between the sides. The lead was four again in the 57th minute when O'Hanlon kicked over a free. The Tribeswomen did the damage with 1-8 unanswered, including Leanne Coen's goal, to lead 1-10 to 0-1 at half time but Tipperary put in a much-improved second-half display. Galway took the stiff wind at the start and opened on two minutes with Louise Ward slotting over. Olivia Divilly also got off the mark in the sixth minute. It wasn't one way traffic as Tipperary dropped a couple of balls towards Aishling Moloney. Caitlin Kennedy also struck low but off target. However, a free won by Ava Fennessy on 18 minutes led to Moloney converting a free. That was after a seven-minute hold up when Galway attacker Shauna Hynes was injured. Her replacement was 2024 captain Ailbhe Davoren who also played a pivotal role. Olivia Divilly leads Galway's scoring charge. Leah Scholes / INPHO Leah Scholes / INPHO / INPHO The key score was the goal on 22 minutes. Divilly, Nicola Ward and Davoren played a part before the latter passed across to the unmarked Coen who kicked to the net. And from there, the hosts proceeded to dominate. Kate Thompson, Divilly (two) and Davoren made it 1-6 to 0-1 as Tipperary struggled with kick outs. That being said, they did drop three dangerous balls towards the opposing square but keeper Dearbhla Gower showed good hands. At the other end, Galway added four more white flags starting with Divilly that could have been a goal. Kate Slevin added two points either side of Davoren's second. Slevin tallied straight after the restart but Galway only managed three scores during the period. Slevin got the second on 43 minutes before Divilly struck her fifth in injury time. 'We'll be hoping to make a quarter-final' - Angela McGuigan believes Tipperary can aim high

They have successfully retained their TG4 All-Ireland senior football championship status since sealing a return to the top-tier competition a little under six years ago, but Angela McGuigan and Tipperary are now seeking to push on to another level in 2025. Despite also representing her native county at minor level in the same season, McGuigan started at full-forward and scored 1-1 when Tipp defeated Meath in a TG4 All-Ireland intermediate football championship final at Croke Park on September 15, 2019. Whereas the Premier women suffered All-Ireland SFC relegation in the wake of winning their previous second-tier title in 2017, they have remained in the Brendan Martin Cup following that memorable 2-16 to 1-14 triumph over the Royal County in GAA HQ. While remarkable resilience has seen them come through relegation play-off games in 2021, 2023 and 2024, McGuigan and Tipperary are hopeful this year will find them reaching a senior quarter-final for the first time in the modern era. After kick-starting their All-Ireland SFC Group 1 campaign against Galway in Tuam Stadium later on today, the Premier will also face Donegal in a home encounter on June 21. 'We've kind of just been surviving the last few years, coming close and not making it. Last year was tough because we drew with Armagh, who obviously won Division One last year and they were in the All-Ireland semi-finals. Losing to Meath by three points as well,' McGuigan said. 'Even though we had probably two of our better games of the year, you're still facing relegation after that. It's definitely hard to take. We're really pushing to try and get into a quarter-final this year. 'It has been a huge goal to try and make it, and not just survive and stay up in senior. You want to try and improve every year. We'll really be hoping to make a quarter-final.' Photo by Matt Browne/Sportsfile With 11 wins from as many games thus far in 2025 between their victorious campaigns in Division 2 of the Lidl National Football League – including an opening round win over the Premier – and the TG4 Connacht Senior Football Championship, Galway come into today's game against Tipperary as one of the country's in-form teams. From Tipp's perspective, they followed up a third place finish in the same division of the Lidl NFL with consecutive defeats to Waterford and Cork in the TG4 Munster Senior Football Championship. However, the final round of the latter competition saw Ed Burke's side playing out a 1-6 apiece draw with current Brendan Martin Cup holders Kerry on May 11 and McGuigan saw this as an ideal confidence booster coming into the All-Ireland series. 'That was huge because I think we weren't really performing well. We'd lost badly enough to Waterford and Cork in the first two matches, so we really needed something out of the Kerry match and it was a good performance. 'That was huge confidence for us and we've really pushed on from that. I think we needed it as well. We needed a bit of a good performance against a top team like them to push us onto championship now against Galway. They play similarly as well, so that helps.' Originally from the Sliabh na mBan club in Tipperary, McGuigan is arguably one of the most well-travelled Gaelic footballers in Ireland. Having joined the Defence Forces upon leaving school, she found herself doing a cadetship in The Curragh. This brought her face-to-face with Grainne Kenneally, the former Waterford footballer who kick-started the second chapter of her inter-county career with Kildare in 2020. She had already been lining out at club level with Eadestown by that point and McGuigan went on to join her in their ranks for the 2021 club season. After amassing 1-3 in their senior football championship final win against Leixlip in the same year, McGuigan registered an outstanding 1-7 as Eadestown retained Kildare's top club crown at the expense of Sarsfields in 2022. 'She was my second in command while I was in cadets. I had a good relationship with her. She was quite scary during cadets, but we became good friends after! She's also an exceptional footballer as well. She won the intermediate All-Ireland recently with Kildare, she had a great career in Waterford. 'Some other players there, Siobhan O'Sullivan [former Sligo and Kildare footballer]. She's a commandant as well in the army. A few more there too. There's a big defence forces origin there, which is great and it's very welcoming. Grainne was one of our instructors, so it was a good way to get some players in for her, I suppose.' Although she transferred back to Sliabh na mBan in April 2023, McGuigan is actually set to don the club colours of St Sylvester's in Dublin this year. As there is an option within the army to spend time in college at a certain point if you don't have a degree, McGuigan has studied sports science at TU Dublin for the past few years. She has played O'Connor Cup on a consistent basis with the capital-based college (albeit a fractured fibula kept her sidelined earlier this year) and lined out alongside some notable figures from the inter-county game. One such player was former Dublin star Niamh McEvoy – a five-time Brendan Martin Cup winner during her time with the Jackies. Along with the likes of Sinead Aherne, Nicole Owens, and Kate Sullivan, McEvoy has long been a stalwart of Sylvester's. While she did take some persuading, McGuigan completed a transfer to the Malahide club at the beginning of April and is looking forward to aiding their cause in this year's Dublin senior championship. "She [McEvoy] was doing a PhD in TUD and she had ended up playing two of the O'Connor Cup weekends with us. She is obviously an unbelievable footballer, but we got on really well personally as well,' McGuigan added. 'She was always hinting at me joining Sylvester's and I was kind of fobbing her off, but then this year it's just a lot of travelling up and down for training. She brought me to lunch one day and she sold it really well. "A year of giving it a good go with Sylvester's. They were obviously in the county final last year and they've just serious talent there.'
