Syed Saddiq completes 4km swim at Langkawi fest

LANGKAWI: Muar member of Parliament Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman completed a four-kilometre swim in two hours, six minutes and 28 seconds at the Langkawi Swimming Fest (LSF) 2025 held at Dataran Tanjung Rhu here today. Although he did not finish among the top three, his determination to complete the open water course drew loud cheers from more than 300 spectators. The 4km race was won by Aiman Moosa Rasheed of the Maldives, who finished in 1:06:54. Also stealing the spotlight was 8-year-old Ayden Adrean, son of actress and singer Bella Astillah, who finished the 400m category in 16 minutes and 21 seconds, earning admiration from the crowd. Bella was seen throughout the event, cheering on her eldest son and offering words of encouragement at the sidelines. The swim fest, organised by Tough Gorilla in collaboration with Tourism Malaysia and the Langkawi Development Authority (Lada), attracted 325 participants from 18 countries. Among the nations represented were Thailand, South Korea, Singapore, South Africa, the United Kingdom, Indonesia, the United States, the Maldives, Lebanon, France, Ireland, Mexico, India, Spain, Colombia, Japan, the Philippines and host country Malaysia. Five categories were contested, the open categories for distances of 8km, 4km, 2km, 1km and 400m. This year's edition also introduced a special category for children, allowing them to swim alongside their mothers. In the men's open category, Malaysian swimmer Harith Aiman Adha Norasli claimed victory, while South Africa's Kim Anderson emerged champion in the women's open category. The event was opened by Lada deputy chief executive officer (Planning and Development) Wan Kamarul Faisal Wan Kamardin.

PUTRAJAYA: Muar MP Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman will know his fate on his appeal against his conviction for criminal breach of trust (CBT), misappropriation of funds and money laundering on June 25. The date was confirmed by deputy public prosecutor Datuk Wan Shaharuddin Wan Ladin following the case management on Thursday (April 24) when asked by reporters. Last week, Justice Ahmad Zaidi Ibrahim, who chaired the three-panel judge, said the panel would take time to consider the submissions from both sides before delivering their decision throughout the three-day proceeding. Other judges on the bench are Justices Azman Abdullah and Noorin Badaruddin. On Nov 9, 2023, the High Court found Syed Saddiq guilty of four charges of abetting in criminal breach of trust (CBT), misappropriation of funds and money laundering involving RM1.2mil. He was sentenced to seven years of imprisonment, a RM10mil fine and two strokes of the cane for all four charges of abetting in criminal breach of trust (CBT), misappropriation of funds and money laundering. Syed Saddiq was charged with abetting Rafiq Hakim Razali, who was entrusted with RM1mil of Armada's funds, to commit CBT by misappropriating the funds. On the second charge, the former youth and sports minister was charged with misappropriating RM120,000 from Armada Bumi Bersatu Enterprise's Maybank Islamic Bhd account by making Rafiq dispose of the money. He was also charged with two counts of money laundering, via transactions of RM50,000 each, believed to be proceeds from unlawful activities, from his Maybank Islamic Bhd account into his Amanah Saham Bumiputera account. Syed Saddiq was first charged with the offences on July 22, 2021.

PETALING JAYA: The Court of Appeal has fixed June 25 to deliver its decision on Muar MP Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman's appeal against his conviction and sentence for criminal breach of trust (CBT) and money laundering. Deputy public prosecutor Wan Shaharuddin Wan Ladin said the date was set during case management today, Berita Harian reported. A three-member Court of Appeal panel chaired by Justice Ahmad Zaidi Ibrahim had heard submissions from the prosecution and defence over three days. In November 2023, Syed Saddiq was found guilty of abetting in CBT involving more than RM1 million belonging to Bersatu Youth, and another count of dishonest misappropriation of property totalling more than RM120,000 also belonging to the wing. The former Bersatu Youth chief was also convicted on two counts of money laundering for transferring a total of RM100,000 to his personal account from a company, Armada Bumi Bersatu Enterprise, linked to the youth wing. The High Court imposed a three-year jail term and ordered that Syed Saddiq receive one stroke of the rotan. The Muda founder was also sentenced to two years in jail and another stroke of the cane for the misappropriation charge and an additional two-year term behind bars for each of the money laundering offences. He was also fined RM10 million. The court ordered that the jail terms for CBT and dishonest misappropriation run consecutively, and for those handed down for money laundering offences to run concurrently. As a result, Syed Saddiq would have to serve seven years in jail. KUALA LUMPUR: Muar member of parliament Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman will know in two months if he succeeds in his appeal to overturn his conviction and sentence linked to abetting criminal breach of trust (CBT), misappropriation of property and money laundering charges. Deputy public prosecutor Datuk Wan Shaharuddin Wan Ladin said a panel of Court of Appeal CoA judges today set June 25 to deliver its verdict. The date was fixed during case management today. Previously, a panel of three judges led by Datuk Ahmad Zaidi Ibrahim set three days to hear submissions from the prosecution and defence on Syed Saddiq's appeal after he was convicted and sentenced by the Kuala Lumpur High Court in November 2023. Syed Saddiq, Syed Saddiq, 33, was sentenced to seven years in jail and two strokes of the rotan by the High Court after being found guilty of multiple charges, including abetting CBT, misappropriation of property, and money laundering. He was sentenced to three years in jail and one stroke of the cane for abetting CBT involving RM1 million of Bersatu Youth (Armada)'s funds. Syed Saddiq was also sentenced to two years in prison and one stroke of the cane for misusing RM120,000 from a Maybank Islamic Bhd account belonging to Armada Bumi Bersatu Enterprise. Additionally, the High Court sentenced him to two years in prison and a RM10 million fine, with a default sentence of four years, for two money laundering charges. However, the court ordered the sentences to run concurrently. If the appeal succeeds, Syed Saddiq will be acquitted, although the prosecution can still appeal to the Federal Court. If dismissed, Syed Saddiq will have one final opportunity to appeal to the Federal Court.
