Newcastle XI vs Arsenal – Predicted lineup and team news
Newcastle United take on Arsenal at the Emirates on Sunday knowing a win will all but secure Champions League qualification. Given their superior goal difference over Aston Villa, three points in North London should be enough to secure a return to Europe's elite. Victory will also take Newcastle above Arsenal and into second, as the club target a first runners-up finish in the Premier League since 1997. Newcastle have already beaten Arsenal three times in all competitions this season, without conceding a goal. Our penultimate game of 24/25. HOWAY THE LADS! ✊ — Newcastle United (@NUFC) May 18, 2025 Arsenal will also confirm their place in the Champions League with a win. However, the Gunners are on a run of five games without a win in all competitions, following last weekend's draw at Liverpool. Sven Botman is set to miss out for Newcastle after picking up a knee issue in last weekend's win over Chelsea. Former Arsenal midfielder Joe Willock is also a a major doubt, while none of Kieran Trippier, Joelinton, Lewis Hall or Matt Targett will feature. Jamaal Lascelles has returned to training after an ACL injury but the clash will come too soon. Emil Krafth is expected to feature as part of a three-man central defence in North London. Newcastle predicted XI: Pope; Krafth, Schar, Burn; Murphy, Tonali, Guimaraes, Livramento; Barnes, Gordon; Isak. Arsenal host Newcastle United in the Premier League on Sunday May 18th 2025. Kick-off in North London is 16:30 BST. Arsenal vs Newcastle is available to watch on Sky Sports Main Event, Sky Go UK and NOW UK. Read – See more – | | | |

'Unfortunately people fear the worst'
Former Newcastle United defender Steve Howey says it is "pleasing" to hear that Sven Botman only picked up a knock on his knee in the Magpies' 2-0 win over Chelsea, after the centre-back suffered with two anterior cruciate ligament injuries last made his first start for three months last weekend before needing to be substituted off 10 minutes into the second half at St. James' voiced his relief for the defender, after manager Eddie Howe confirmed it wasn't a "serious injury" in his pre-match news conference."I think he has been unlucky," Howey told BBC Radio Newcastle. "Obviously the ACL injury was the ACL injury, but I think his first injury came from a knock as well."You are going to get knocks, bangs and bruises in the position that he plays, but I think he's just been really unlucky on the last two occasions."As soon as it comes out that it's his knee, unfortunately people fear the worst because of what has happened previously with him. In a weird way, it is pleasing that it's just a knock."On the mental impact of lengthy injuries, he added: "It is tough. You have to be mentally strong to get through them because you do feel as though you're not part of things."That comes as no surprise because you aren't part of things, you're just watching the lads out of the window training every day and playing games."But Eddie Howe seems to realise how difficult it is for players. Back in the day, managers didn't care because they thought: 'What's the point of you being that involved if I can't use you?'"You have to be lucky to have good physios and other people who are helping you through your recovery."Botman has been through tough times but I'm sure he has been made a lot stronger because of them, psychologically as well."Listen to the full interview on BBC Sounds

Eddie Howe frustrated to see Newcastle's top players linked with moves
The Magpies head for the Emirates Stadium on Sunday lying two points behind the Gunners and knowing a fourth victory over Mikel Arteta's men this season – they beat them home and away in the Carabao Cup semi-finals – would leave them in pole position to snatch the runners-up spot behind champions Liverpool. They will do so having seen a series of pundits suggest the likes of Alexander Isak, Anthony Gordon and Bruno Guimaraes could take a step up by joining the North London club, a view which rankles on Tyneside. Howe said: 'It is a frustration because I don't see why our players are getting linked here, there and everywhere with other clubs. 'I'd like to think the players are happy here. I'd like to think again that they're seeing us grow and develop into a team that hopefully can compete at the top end of the division. 'We have no divine right to do that, but I think we're going in the right direction, so yes, it's a source of frustration. But I don't let it absorb me, really.' Newcastle had perhaps gained a reputation as a selling club under previous owner Mike Ashley, but the financial clout of the current regime has changed the picture at St James' Park and astute investment off the pitch has helped them to end their 70-year domestic trophy drought and compete for Champions League qualification. Spending restrictions have slowed the project and Newcastle have not made a major signing in the last three transfer windows – but that is likely to change this summer. Head coach Howe said: 'Regular success, consistent success, all these things help you in the journey that you're on to show to everybody that that's where the club's ambition is. There's no doubt that's what the club's ambition is. 'As we've said many times, the ability financially to compete the last few years has been hampered by PSR. But those issues aren't there for the coming window, so I don't see any reason why we can't strengthen, not weaken ourselves.' Wages may be a different matter, although Howe, who insists attracting players to the north-east rather than London has not been an issue, revealed the perception of a soft salary cap is not necessarily accurate. Eddie Howe on Sven Botman: "It was a knock, he got a bang on his knee. We're not sure about Sven's availability for the weekend but we'll give him a chance to be fit. We don't think it's a serious injury. He's been unlucky. You're going to get knocks and bruises in his position… — Newcastle United (@NUFC) May 16, 2025 He said: 'It depends on the individual and if the individual is worth doing that with, then I think you need to consider it and maybe implement it. But you have to be aware that every decision you make has a consequence, so obviously you have to think that through carefully.' Defender Sven Botman is a doubt for the game after suffering a knock to his knee during last weekend's 2-0 win over Chelsea, although the damage is not thought to be too serious.
