Meet Brett Sutter; Former AHL ironman and now Calgary Wranglers' new head coach

Sutter, the former captain, retires after a 17-season playing career that included a record-setting tenure in the AHL. Sutter announced his retirement from pro hockey on 15 July 2024, finishing with 1,090 AHL games, tied for fourth-most all-time, and 60 NHL following, he joined the Wranglers coaching staff as an assistant under Trent has since worked alongside Cull and veteran assistant Joe coaching, Sutter was one of the AHL's most dedicated captains. He led teams in Quad City, Charlotte, Ontario, and Calgary. He served as captain for 10 the 2022‑23 season, he became the Wranglers' inaugural captain, guiding them to the Macgregor Kilpatrick Trophy as regular-season his career, he has accumulated an impressive 463 points from 198 goals and 265 assists. He also recorded 893 penalty minutes. In the postseason, he contributed 33 points in 69 games. Additionally, his dedication to sportsmanship earned him the Fred T. Hunt Memorial Award in the 2018-19 also scored in his NHL debut on 23 December 2008 for the in Viking, Alberta, Sutter's journey began in the WHL with the Kootenay Ice and Red Deer Rebels from 2003– was selected by the Calgary Flames in 2005 and went on to play stints in Calgary, Carolina, Minnesota, and Los Angeles hockey August 2022, he returned home to sign with Calgary's AHL team, continuing a deep-rooted connection with the Flames is part of the Sutter hockey dynasty, son of former Flames coach Darryl Sutter, and nephew to legends like Brent, Brian, Duane, Ron, and Rich VP and Wranglers GM Brad Pascall praised Sutter's leadership, experience, and organizational knowledge. The team believes he brings both credibility and a strong mentor presence to assist in player development.

Killer Asian needle ants are invading the US
An invasive species of ants have been found in at least 20 US states and are spreading across the country. Asian needle ants, also known as brachyponera chinensis, have a potentially deadly sting. 'It injects venom that can harm you,' University of Georgia professor of urban etymology, Dan Suiter, said recently. 'Its sting can be life-threatening.' People who are vulnerable to ant and bee stings could go into anaphylactic shock if bitten by Asian needle ants. 'If you suffer from anaphylaxis, you should really know what this ant looks like,' Sutter said. Their populations peak yearly in July and August. Asian needle ants are native to China, Japan and the Koreas. Anaphylaxis is an allergic reaction that can be life-threatening, and can happen within seconds of a sting, according to the Mayo Clinic. The annual list ranks health systems based on clinical outcomes, extended outcomes, operational efficiency and patient experience. Explore All Events To help spotlight the top hospitals and health systems across the nation, The Business Journals is partnering with Premier, a technology-driven, health care improvement company, to publish its annual rankings, including its 100 Top Hospitals ranking. Sutter ranked No. 3 among five large health systems, following two based in Texas. It earned five stars, indicating performance in the top quintile, for clinical outcomes, which consider risk-adjusted mortality, complications, hospital-acquired infections, 30-day mortality and readmissions. It also received four stars for operational efficiency and patient experience. Sutter is one of the largest employers, nonprofits and companies in the Sacramento region. It reported nearly $18 billion in revenue for fiscal 2024 and employs about 17,500 people in Sacramento, Placer, El Dorado and Yolo counties. This year's top performers on Premier's 15 Top Health Systems rankings were Houston Methodist in Houston, Texas; Saint Francis Health System in Tulsa, Oklahoma; and CHI Memorial in Chattanooga, Tennessee, each of which topped its respective size category. Only health systems with at least two short-term, general, acute care hospitals with separate Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services Certification Numbers were included in the analysis. Rankings were based on Medicare Provider Analysis and Review data, and data from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services Care Compare website. Health systems do not apply to be considered. The health systems on this year's rankings outperformed peer systems by 22% on inpatient mortality rates. They also had fewer infections and shorter stays compared to peers. If the performance of this year's 15 Top Health Systems were extrapolated to all Medicare inpatients, more than 171,000 lives could be saved in-hospital and the typical patient could be released a half-day sooner. Sutter Health Breaks Ground on $442 Million Neuroscience Complex in San Francisco
SAN FRANCISCO, June 04, 2025 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Sutter Health today broke ground on the new Sutter Advanced Neuroscience Complex at Mission Bernal – a major milestone in expanding access to high-quality neurological and neurosurgical care in Northern California. The five-story, 129,000-square-foot facility will be located at the corner of César Chávez and Valencia streets (3555 César Chavez Street) in San Francisco and is expected to open in 2028. Designed as a regional destination for brain health, the complex will unite care delivery, advanced diagnostics and research in one location. High-Tech Hub for Brain Health This $442 million investment underscores Sutter Health's long-term commitment to expanding access to specialized, high-acuity care in San Francisco and the broader Bay Area. When complete, the Sutter Advanced Neuroscience Complex at Mission Bernal will bring together approximately 80 physicians and clinicians across range of neurological specialties – including Alzheimer's disease and dementia, ALS, headache, neurosurgery, neurology, epilepsy, neuro-oncology and movement disorders – to deliver seamless, integrated care in one location. The new complex will house a full spectrum of services, including neurology, neurosurgery, imaging, lab, infusion, rehabilitation and an on-site ambulatory surgery center. Patients will also benefit from direct access to leading research and clinical trials, further supporting advancements in diagnosis and treatment. Two of Sutter's nationally recognized programs – the Ray Dolby Brain Health Center and the Forbes Norris MDA/ALS Research and Treatment Center – will relocate to the new complex, enabling greater capacity and deeper collaboration among specialists. The site will also include underground parking to improve convenience for patients and visitors. In a related investment, Sutter plans to add two neurological intervention suites to the adjacent CPMC Mission Bernal campus hospital by 2027. These suites will offer advanced imaging and enable rapid detection and minimally invasive treatment of life-threatening neurological conditions.
