Two injured in alleged power surge explosion
Two people have been injured in an alleged explosion caused by an underground power surge in Surrey. Emergency services were called to reports of an explosion in Cranbourne Close, in Horley, at about 22:15 BST on Tuesday. One person was taken to hospital for treatment for second degree burns, while paramedics treated another person at the scene. UK Power Networks said it was working to restore power to a number of homes in the area after a power cut caused by the surge. A South East Coast Ambulance Service spokesperson confirmed it was called to reports of an explosion. "Crews assessed and treated two patients at the scene. One patient was then taken to a local hospital for further medical treatment and the second patient was discharged at the scene," they said. Surrey Fire & Rescue Service have contacted for comment. Surrey Police submits plans for new divisional HQ
Surrey Police has submitted plans to build its eastern division headquarters in force said a "bespoke, permanent" HQ would be developed on the Cleeve Road site, alongside affordable housing. The division left its base in Reigate Police Station after the discovery of unstable reinforced autoclaved aerated concrete (RAAC) in 2023. It has been temporarily based at the former HQ of Surrey Fire & Rescue Service on Wray Park in Reigate since April. What is RAAC concrete and why is it a safety risk? Deputy Chief Constable Nev Kemp called the planning application a "key step" in the "journey" to find a permanent location for police operations in East Surrey. He said the force had been focused on finding a site that would give officers the facilities they need to investigate crime and keep people safe. Surrey Police said it was working closely with key stakeholders in the community, including Mole Valley District Council. The force purchased the former Electrical Research Association and Cobham Industries site on Cleeve Road in originally planned to develop a new, purpose-built headquarters there for the entire force, but following a 2021 review decided to keep its existing building in Guildford.

Residents evacuated amid blaze at block of flats
Residents had to be evacuated from a block of flats in Surrey after a fire started in an electrical cupboard. The blaze broke out in the six-storey building by Monument Hill in Weybridge at about 09:50 GMT, Surrey Fire & Rescue said. At its height, there were eight fire engines at the scene and nearby residents were told to keep their windows and doors closed due to the smoke. Residents were evacuated as a "precaution" but everyone was accounted for, said firefighters. Police and ambulance services attended the scene, but there were no casualties. The fire was extinguished just after 12:00 GMT, with one fire engine remaining at the scene. Surrey Fire & Rescue said the fire was in an electrical cupboard. A spokesperson said: "While the electricity company carries out checks and remedial work in the building, residents are being supported at a respite centre by the local authority."
