Ludhiana: Roadways conductor ‘thrashed' by pvt operators; union halts buses
Hundreds of passengers were left stranded at the Ludhiana interstate bus stand on Saturday after contractual workers of the Punjab Roadways abruptly halted bus services for nearly an hour from 2.30 pm to 3.30 pm. The shutdown was prompted in protest against police 'inaction' over an alleged assault on a Roadways conductor — Surendra Kumar — by private bus staff on the bus stand premises. Passengers stranded at Ludhiana bus stand after contractual workers halted the buses during a protest in Ludhiana on Saturday. (Gurpreet Singh/HT) The workers stalled the movement of all buses to and from the terminal during the protest. The sudden disruption triggered traffic chaos outside the bus stand as several buses got stuck in a haphazard manner at the terminal and on adjoining roads, hampering the regular flow of traffic. Shamsher Singh Dhillon, state general secretary of the Punjab Roadways, Punbus and PRTC Contractual Workers' Union, said, 'On Friday night, some private bus staff heading to Delhi assaulted Punjab Roadways conductor Surendra Kumar who was on duty in a Ferozepur depot bus going to Chandigarh.' 'When the bus halted at Ludhiana bus stand at around 9.30 pm, a migrant family, unfamiliar with the city, asked conductor Surendra Kumar for help in boarding a bus as they had to go to Bareilly. While he was assisting them, staff of a private bus tried to forcefully take the family into their Delhi-bound bus. When Kumar resisted, they misbehaved with him and then brutally assaulted him,' he said. A written complaint was submitted to the police station at the bus stand, but the authorities failed to take timely action, Dhillon said, adding that the bus operations were halted at around 2.30 pm on Saturday. Subhash Chandra, in-charge of the bus stand police post, said, 'We received a formal complaint and have summoned both parties. The matter has now been resolved mutually.' When contacted, Navraj Batish, general manager of Punjab Roadways, stated, 'The shutdown took place without any prior notice, despite the police already investigating the issue. Such sudden disruptions cause heavy losses to the government. Whoever is responsible must bear the consequences.' The protest caught daily commuters off guard, leaving many stranded without any alternatives. Shanvi Verma, a CA aspirant from Jagraon, said, 'I travel to Ludhiana daily for my coaching classes. When I reached the bus stand after finishing my classes, I found out that the buses were not operating. I feel stuck with no transport in sight.' Echoing similar sentiments, Harjinder Gill, a commuter heading to Bathinda, said, 'My uncle is hospitalised and I had taken a half-day leave to visit him. My family is alone there. It is absurd that common people like us are forced to bear such inconveniences without any fault.'

2 GDA officials booked for demanding bribe; 1 held
A supervisor of the Ghaziabad development authority (GDA) has been held for allegedly demanding ₹2 lakh as bribe from a resident for approving construction of a private building in Muradnagar. Police said the anti-corruption team from Meerut, who nabbed the supervisor, has filed an FIR against him along with a junior engineer (JE). The bribe was allegedly demanded on behalf of the JE. The incident came to light on a complaint by Muradnagar resident Surendra Kumar who bought a property on Rawli Road in November 2024 and later constructed a basement and some pillars. Kumar alleged that on May 28, the JE and the supervisor came to the site and asked him to stop work till some talks were held. When the complainant requested them to allow the construction, they demanded ₹2 lakh, without any negotiation, Kumar told the anti-corruption unit. The FIR in this connection was lodged at Muradnagar police station under relevant sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988, and named supervisor Raj Kumar and junior engineer Ajit Kumar, as suspects. The inquiry, prima facie, found that the allegations by the complainant were correct. The investigating team planned to lay a trap and catch the suspects red-handed. On June 2, the supervisor arrived at a designated place in Muradnagar, and the complainant handed him a bag containing the money in cash. While the supervisor was taking the money from Kumar, the team nabbed him. Investigators said he told them that he was collecting the amount as told by the JE as he left to attend some family emergency. 'The FIR names the supervisor and the JE, and the supervisor was arrested by the team of the anti-corruption unit. They also filed the FIR and will take up further investigation in the case,' Surendra Nath Tiwary, deputy commissioner of police (DCP) of rural zone, said. When asked to comment on the allegations, GDA said the act by the staff has dented the image of the authority. 'In connection with the incident, the supervisor has been suspended with immediate effect, and a team will also take up disciplinary action and an inquiry. Meanwhile, senior officials have sought a report about allegations against the JE and will soon apprise the state government about the matter. Further required action will also be taken up,' Rudresh Shukla, media coordinator of GDA, said.

Normalcy returns to JK after tensions following cross-border shelling, drone attacks
Jammu (Jammu and Kashmir) [India], May 14 (ANI): The situation across several districts of Jammu and Kashmir has returned to normalcy after cross-border shelling and attempted drone attacks from Pakistan had kept the residents of the region on high alert for several days. Following the understanding of the cessation of hostilities between India and Pakistan on May 10, things have shifted to being normal, as reports of overnight drone attacks or cross-border firing and shelling have gradually stopped. The districts of Akhnoor, Jammu, Samba, and Poonch are particularly relieved to see a decrease in tensions, which were escalated following the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam. Residents now continue with their daily routines as the situation becomes stable, with no incidents of cross-border activity reported for the past two days. However, drone sightings in Jammu, Samba, Akhnoor, and Kathua were earlier reported in the intervening night of May 12 and May 13. Meanwhile, Residents of Samba expressed relief and appreciation for the Indian Army's efforts in maintaining security. Surendra Kumar, a local from Samba, told ANI, 'All their (Pakistan's) drones were neutralised by our forces. So, the situation seems good now. It is peaceful. It is good if this continues.' Another resident, Rai Kumar, praised the Army's role, saying, 'What the Indian Army is doing is good... The Indian Army is zindabad. The Army has done a lot for us. We sleep at home but they protect us at the border... We have been seeing Pakistan for a long time; I am 50 years old... They keep sending terrorists to our side. They kill our jawans and civilians. They are not going to mend their ways... Something should be done...' This period of calm follows a tense phase after India's 'Operation Sindoor' on May 7, which targeted nine terror camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir (PoJK) in retaliation for the Pahalgam terror attack that killed 26 civilians. Pakistan's subsequent retaliatory actions, including drone attacks and heavy shelling along the Line of Control (LoC) and International Border. However, the Indian Army's robust response, including neutralising Pakistani drones and causing damage to 11 airbases in Pakistan, has contributed to the current de-escalation. (ANI)
