RTE sports boss defends GAA coverage after criticism from fans

RTE Head of Sport Declan McBennett has been forced to defend the broadcaster's coverage of GAA after facing criticism from fans on Saturday. Once again, fans from around the country were disappointed that certain games weren't being televised or streamed on RTE or the GAA owned streaming service GAA+. Meath supporters were the most aggrieved party on Saturday as their famous win over Kerry was unavailable to stream or watch on TV, with highlights being shown this evening on the Sunday Game instead. Taking to social media on Friday afternoon - a full day before Meath's game even took place - Fergal Lynch, sports editor for the Meath Chronicle website, took issue with the decision not to show the game on TV or online. "If RTE or GAA+ couldn't be arsed to show certain games then what harm would it be to let @clubber provide coverage at a PPV cost.. "Clubber provide a great service and I'm sure Meath fans in hospitals, nursing homes and abroad would love to watch their team play.." The post clearly struck a chord with fans as it earned hundreds of likes on Twitter, and it also drew a response from RTE's McBennett, who wrote "Maybe as a sports 'editor' you might want to do some journalism and ask questions as to why as opposed to playing to the gallery. "If you did you would see its for contractual reasons, nothing to do with being 'ar**d'. More games than ever available via RTE GAA+ TG4 and BBCNI." This isn't the first time that the coverage of GAA has been criticised by fans. It can be argued that the issue has been around since Sky Sports began showing GAA behind a paywall for the first time over a decade ago. Since the end of the Sky Sports deal a couple of years ago, games have been streamed first on GAAGO and now GAA+ along with RTE's traditional TV coverage. But despite more games being shown than ever before, fans are often left frustrated that in 2025 they are unable to watch their county play more often than not even when the matches they are involved in are crucial All-Ireland clashes.

The Sunday Game panel: Kilkenny in the mix to 'go all the way'

It's ten years since Kilkenny last brought home the Liam MacCarthy and while much of the narrative has been about Munster's hegemony since, the panel on The Sunday Game feel that Derek Lyng's side have a great chance to reign supreme come the third weekend in July. On Sunday, the Cats completed a Leinster six-timer when accounting for Galway at Croke Park. They now have four weeks to prepare for an All-Ireland semi-final. But for now, Anthony Daly was quick to credit them for standing tall in the province again. "It's incredible going," he said. "We all mention the era of the round-robin in how you could slip up and get caught but they're the dominant force in the province, great achievement. "I'm delighted for Derek, taking over from Brian (Cody), that was always going to be tough going. I think he's doing a really good job and I think they have a chance of going all the way. I'd be a small bit worried that they lull a bit in a lot of games and they'll have to iron that out. "They have a few weeks off now and we're looking at the potential of a few big clashes down the line. We won't get ahead of ourselves but congrats to them today." Also on the programme, Ursula Jacob spoke about them having to now step it up in a month's time and the strength they have down the spine of their team. "They have obviously been very dominant in Leinster and the challenge is can they drive on from that?," said the former Wexford camogie star. "To win today without Eoin Cody, who is one of their star players, was really impressive. "Their back line looked very comfortable, maybe part of that was down to Galway not applying a whole lot of pressure. They looked very impressive down the spine; Huw Lawlor was immense, Richie Reid was dominant and then you have TJ (Reid) and Mossy Keoghan scoring goals for fun. The Sunday Game panel believe that this Kilkenny team have played themselves into the contenders conversation for the All-Ireland title. Galway perhaps a touch defensive in their set-up, says Anthony Daly. #rtegaa #TheSundayGame — The Sunday Game (@TheSundayGame) June 8, 2025 "You have to say that Kilkenny thrive off the space and the pitch at Croke Park. When they get to an All-Ireland semi-final in Croke Park, they are a dangerous animal, and they'll also be hurting from last year's loss to Clare. They will want to show the Munster teams that they are there or thereabouts." Brendan Cummins, who was between the posts for a number of All-Ireland final clashes with Kilkenny, is in no doubt where they stand in the pecking order, when saying: "Kilkenny are definitely in the top three teams in the country". And the prospect of likely facing Munster opposition in the semis will motivate them even more in the view of Cummins. "Last year, Clare had everything to do to beat them. I think they like that fact that everyone talks about Munster hurling. If they end up playing Limerick further down the road, they will be licking their lips at that. Eoin Cody will be back and the narrative will be that you keep the score down as best you can, but Kilkenny are a very proud county. "I don't know the last time someone hammered Kilkenny. There is something inside Kilkenny and it's a long time since they won an All-Ireland and let us be the ones to do that. They have a great chance."

Des Cahill at centre of RTÉ's €11m PRSI court case

RTÉ sports presenter Des Cahill is at the centre of a landmark High Court case that could have an €11m cost to the national broadcaster. Cahill is one of two high earners at the broadcaster whose cases have led the Department of Social Protection to determine RTÉ was obliged to make extra PRSI payments on their salary. The former Sunday Game host's case has been examined as part of a department review into whether presenters' employment at RTÉ was more akin to that of employees than independent contractors. Cahill, who has non-staff contractor position at RTÉ despite working there for over 40 years, is the subject of one of two cases RTÉ has appealed to the High Court arising from the department's inquiry into alleged bogus-self employment at the station. The two High Court cases have been brought by RTÉ against the Social Protection Minister and an appeals officer in the social welfare appeals office. Both are listed for mention in the Master's Court on July 8.

Kieran McGeeney rues missed goal chances but happy that Armagh topped group

Kieran McGeeney felt both his Armagh side and Dublin failed to hit the heights in their clash at Croke Park, while also lamenting the number of goal chances spurned by the All-Ireland SFC champions. A five-point win at GAA HQ ensured the Ulster county's progression through to the quarter-finals of this year's race for Sam Maguire, with the Dubs now needing to avoid defeat in their final-round encounter against Derry to ensure that they remain involved. It was a deserved win for Armagh, this despite the 17 wides that Dessie Farrell's side chalked up and their 4/3 breaches. For McGeeney, he felt his side could have made a greater indent on the scoreboard by way of raising green flags. Speaking to RTÉ Sport, he summed up the clash by saying: "Both teams weren't at their best." On the failure to put the ball past Stephen Cluxton, he said: "We missed a lot of goal chances in the first half and they missed a lot of chances overall. "There wouldn't have been much in it if they had their shooting boots on. We had four one-on-ones with Stephen and got nothing out of it and I think they got three points from our 12-point chances. Look, it was great to win the game and we top the group, so that's a big thing for us." That said, the Orchard County boss was less than impressed by what he witnessed. Armagh boss Kieran McGeeney sees plenty of room for improvement with his side's performance, despite their five point victory over Dublin at Croke Park, a win that sends them into the to All-Ireland quarter-finals. #RTEGAA #TheSundayGame — The Sunday Game (@TheSundayGame) June 1, 2025 He added: "You can see the pace of Dublin when they go on the attack and they are frightening when they go through that middle part. We were happy with some parts but if we are to progress any further we will need a big improvement. "We did a lot of good stuff but at this level you have to take those chances. Cluxton is a top keeper but we made it easy for them and I'm sure Dessie is in there giving them loads for missing those point chances." His opposite number also lamented his side's accuracy in front of the posts, Farrell commenting: "It was disappointing in that I thought we prepared well but we were sloppy out there. Shooting efficiency cost us dearly and we had a couple of those technical breaches as well, which was very unlike us. "That cost us five points and you won't get way with that against a team like Armagh. At this stage we have to stay on script and keep driving on; it's about development, growth, taking the lessons, and continuing to build for ourselves. There are ups and downs along the way. Today wasn't a good day and we're into knockout football now." Dublin boss Dessie Farrell was left to rue wayward shooting and technical infringements as his side suffered a five point defeat to Armagh at Croke Park. #RTEGAA #TheSundayGame — The Sunday Game (@TheSundayGame) June 1, 2025 What will frustrate Farrell even more was that his troops started brightly but could not regain the initiative when Armagh got on top after the 20-minute mark in the opening half. "The first quarter was really good and we looked very sharp and very clinical. We then lost our way and we'll try and unpack that from a mental perspective as well as everything else. "That second quarter before half-time was costly, we were constantly chasing and though at times were getting a foothold, getting at their kickout which was very difficult to do. "That was giving us a bit of momentum but we could not convert off that and had a lot of bad wides, coupled with poor decision-making. "Shot selection in the last quarter could have had us closer but ultimately it didn't happen for us because we didn't perform the way we would have wanted to."
