Sepang International Circuit to host 2026 Malaysia Games opening ceremony
The 2026 Selangor Malaysia Games (Sukma) opening ceremony will be held at the Sepang International Circuit (SIC), marking the first time in history the event will be staged outside a stadium. SIC will also feature in the road cycling events, serving as either the start or finish line. Track cycling events will take place at the Nilai Velodrome in Negeri Sembilan. Selangor Youth, Sports and Entrepreneurship Committee chairman Mohd Najwan Halimi said the idea to hold the opening ceremony at SIC was aimed at creating something different. The inspiration came partly from the Paris Olympics, which held its opening ceremony on the Seine River. Mohd Najwan, who met senior editors and journalists in Setia Alam, Selangor, this afternoon, also revealed that the organising committee has approved upgrades to aquatics, shooting, and archery venues across the state, as well as to the Pandamaran and Petaling Jaya City Council hockey stadiums. ADVERTISEMENT No new stadiums will be built for the 2026 Sukma, which Selangor aims to organise within a budget of approximately RM200 million. 'As the main stadium at the Shah Alam Sports Complex will only be ready in 2027, we decided to create something different and memorable for the 2026 Sukma opening ceremony,' said Mohd Najwan. 'We saw how unique the Paris Olympics opening ceremony was, and we plan to deliver something just as exciting to showcase the state's uniqueness. 'Sepang International Circuit would be perfect. I can't reveal the plans yet, but we have more than a year to prepare. We don't want a clichéd opening ceremony.' Mohd Najwan added that the exact date of the 2026 Sukma will be announced by Aug 15, when the Sukma Supreme Council is also expected to unveil the complete list of sports. There will be 28 core sports, along with five optional ones. ADVERTISEMENT Among the sports under consideration are chess, Chinese chess, boxing, silambam, kabaddi, Muay Thai, cricket, softball, pickleball, and e-sports. Joining Mohd Najwan in the media engagement were two officials from the organising committee – Venu Ramadass (deputy chief executive officer-cum-chief operating officer) and Selangor Sports Council executive director Mohamad Nizam Marjugi – who also shared the state's vision for the Games.

Sarawak MSSM divers exceed expectations

KUCHING (May 31): Sarawak's young divers are charting a bold new course toward international waters after dominating the Malaysian School Sports Council (MSSM) diving championship. Held from May 24-28 at the Johor Baru City Council (MBJB) Arena Larkin Aquatic Centre, the event saw Sarawak rise to the top of the national diving scene with a commanding medal haul of nine golds, two silvers and six bronzes. The victory was hard-earned against stiff competition, with Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur finishing second with two golds, four silvers and two bronze medals while Selangor were placed third with one gold, three silvers and one bronze. Other teams in contention included Sabah, Penang, Johor, Perlis, Perak and Federal Territory of Labuan. Despite the strong field, it was Sarawak's consistent excellence across all age categories that set them apart from the rest of the teams. In the Boys' Under-18 division, Muhammad Lutfir Rahman struck gold in the 1m springboard and added a silver in the 3m springboard, while teammate Soh Tze Kang delivered another gold in the 3m springboard. In the Girls' Under-18 category, Nurul Farisya Alia Affendi secured a silver in the 3m springboard event. The winning momentum continued in the Under-15 category, with Brayden Wong claiming gold in the 3m springboard and bronze in the 1m springboard. On the girls' side, Cecelia Olivia dominated with double golds in both the 1m and 3m springboard, while Nur Ikmas Darwisyah contributed two bronze medals. Sarawak's youngest divers also made their mark. In the Boys' Under-12 division, Muhammad Hijri Rayyan captured gold in the 1m and bronze in the 3m springboard, while Awang Sharzan Zaqwan earned gold in the 3m and bronze in the 1m. For the Under-12 girls, Nur Aryna Balqis emerged as a double gold medallist in the 1m and 3m springboar, while Izara Leanne Sufeeya delivered strong fourth-place finishes in both events. To Sarawak head coach Shi Yang, the MSSM results exceeded all expectations. 'I didn't expect that we could win many gold medals and we were all very surprised. 'Our divers gave an outstanding performance by showing mental strength, great technique and resilience under pressure,' he added. However, the coach from China was quick to shift focus towards what lies ahead. 'This victory is just the beginning. Now we are preparing for the SEA Age Group Championships in Singapore. 'That will be our next big test. After that, we're building towards Sukma 2026 in Selangor. Perak start anew by competing in A1 Semi-Pro League next season
PETALING JAYA: Perak will compete in the A1 Semi-Pro League next season, joining their northern neighbours Kedah, who have also pledged to do so. After the previous owners said they would not compete in any competition due to finances, the Perak Football Association (Pafa) said they would chart a fresh course with renewed energy and a clear vision to reclaim their proud legacy in Malaysian football. On May 23, Kedah and Perak failed to obtain the National Licence required for participation in the 2025-2026 Super League season. Pafa's immediate focus now lies in assembling a competitive team, with the Malaysia Games (Sukma) Perak squad forming the backbone of this rebuilding phase. This team will serve as the foundation for Perak's return to prominence in the domestic scene. Plans are under way to compete in AFL-sanctioned leagues as a starting point, alongside long-term preparations for Sukma 2026, the President's Cup 2026, and Youth Cup 2026 campaigns. Now standing as the central pillar of football in the state, Pafa acknowledge the disappointment felt by fans in recent years, but calls for unity and belief.
