RMAF leadership should continue to focus on human capital development - Chief of Air Force

ALOR SETAR: The Chief of Air Force Gen Tan Sri Mohd Asghar Khan Goriman Khan expressed his hope that the Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) leadership will carry on to focus on human capital by nurturing personnel trained and specialised in managing new and sophisticated assets in the current defence transformation era. He pointed out that it was important to boost the capabilities and readiness of personnel with new complex technology in line with the RMAF Capability Development Plan, CAP55. 'I really hope that this matter (human capital development) will continue... to sent trainees to undergo expertise training (on) new technologies, including the use of artificial intelligence (AI) or more advanced technology. 'When these (high technology) assets reach us, we are ready ... there's no need for any surprises when the equipment arrives,' he told reporters after the presentation of flight wings ceremony for Basic Flight Training Series 86/24 and Basic Helicopter Flight Training Series 66/24 at the Air Force College here today, where 27 trainees - 12 fixed wing pilots and 15 helicopter pilots from Flight Institute 1 and 2 - received their flight wings. He added that learning new technology was not something hard but required discipline and expertise so that assignments given could be completed well. Mohd Asghar Khan noted that he would be retiring from the service on June 26 after serving for 40 years and that handover ceremony would be held at the Subang Air Base in Selangor on that date. Mohd Asghar Khan, 60, has been Chief of Air Force since March 2022 and joined the service as a cadet officer at the Royal Military College before starting his career as a RMAF airforce fighter pilot in 1985. Bearing the call sign 'GUNJIZ', Mohd Asghar Khan last showed off his piloting skills when he flew a Sukhoi Su-30MKM at the recent 2025 Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace Exhibition.

Sky on fire: Lima '25 roars to life with jet-powered spectacle

LANGKAWI: The deafening roar of fighter jets and the thrum of helicopters once again reverberated across the island as the Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace Exhibition 2025 (Lima '25) officially opened its doors today. The high-octane opening act was set in motion by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, who symbolically activated a replica fighter jet throttle on the tarmac of the Mahsuri International Exhibition Centre (MIEC), signalling the start of the aerial spectacle. Moments later, two Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) F/A-18D Hornets thundered overhead, streaking past the main stage in a dramatic flypast while releasing flares, electrifying the crowd and setting the tone for what was to come. Adding to the adrenaline-fuelled atmosphere, pyrotechnics were launched near the Langkawi International Airport runway, their shockwaves rippling through the air as anticipation mounted. The aerial display continued with the RMAF's Sukhoi Su-30MKM fighter jets executing precise, high-speed manoeuvres. This was followed by an impressive demonstration of airlift capability, as two of the RMAF's heavy transport aircraft – the Airbus A400M Atlas and the Lockheed Martin C-130 Hercules – soared gracefully over the exhibition grounds, drawing thousands of eyes skyward. An elegant formation flight by the RMAF Flying Institute's Pilatus PC-7 aircraft followed, showcasing flight discipline and synchronisation. Next came a coordinated helicopter performance, featuring the agile EC120B Colibri and the formidable EC725AP. The latter stole the show with a synchronised aerial ballet, circling in tight formation as pyrotechnics erupted once again from the runway below. The opening ceremony culminated in a grand aerial procession, with all participating aircraft – from fighter jets and transport planes to helicopters – flying in formation directly above the prime minister. Now in its 17th edition since its inception in 1991, the Lima exhibition will run for five days from today and is expected to attract thousands of local and international visitors.

Brahmos becomes hugely popular after Operation Sindoor, India's fire-and-forget missile is now wanted by.... Operation Sindoor can be loosely called as Surgical strike 2.0. But it was hugely different from what happened in Balakot in 2019. This time India hit Pakistan in its heart and without crossing the LoC. This brave act was possible with India supersonic cruise missile – the Brahmos, which was first successful tested off the Chandipur coast of Odisha in 2021. In April this year, India dispatched the second batch of BrahMos supersonic missiles to the Philippines, marking a milestone in global defence cooperation. This follows a $375 million deal signed in 2022. According to reports, many countries have expressed fresh interest in acquiring this advanced system. At present, India has three variants of this missile – the air-launched version, the land-based-version and submarine-based version. Brahmos is a two-stage missile with a solid propellant booster engine. At its first stage, the engine brings the missile to supersonic speed and then gets separated. What is Brahmos? Brahmos is a universal long range supersonic cruise missile system that can be launched from land, sea and air. It has been jointly developed by DRDO, India, and NPOM, Russia. BrahMos is an amalgamation of the names of the Brahmaputra and Moskva rivers. Which countries want to acquire Brahmos? According to report following are countries which are interested in Brahmos: Vietnam: India is close to finalising a $700 million deal to supply Brahmos missiles to Vietnam, boosting its maritime defence against China. Malaysia: Malaysia may consider Brahmos missiles for its Sukhoi Su-30MKM fighter jets and Kedah-class warships. Thailand, Singapore, Brunei: These South-East Asian countries are in various stages of negotiations with India. Brazil, Chile, Argentina, Venezuela: These Latin American countries are interested in the naval and coastal defence variants of Brahmos Egypt, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates (UAE), Qatar, Oman: These Middle Eastern countries have also expressed interest, with talks in advanced stages with some of them. South Africa, Bulgaria: South Africa and Bulgaria are in different stages of negotiation for possible procurement.
