REUTERS/Maxim Shemetov/Pool/ File Photo Indonesia's Prabowo to hold talks with Putin this week, eyes 'strategic partnership' MOSCOW - Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto will hold talks with President Vladimir Putin in St Petersburg later this week and the two countries should explore a strategic partnership, the Asian nation's foreign minister said on Tuesday. Russia is due to hold its annual economic forum in St Petersburg this week where Putin traditionally gives a key-note speech and hosts a foreign leader. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, speaking at a meeting in Moscow with Indonesia's foreign minister, Sugiono, who uses only one name, said that relations between Moscow and Jakarta were trustworthy, friendly and constructive. "We welcome our close ties," Lavrov told Sugiono. "There is chemistry between both of the leaders," Sugiono said of ties between Putin and Prabowo, and suggested they develop and deepen their ties "into a strategic partnership." Indonesia and Russia, Sugiono said, would continue to work on developing trade, economic, security, investment, energy and tourism ties. Indonesia became a full member of the BRICS grouping earlier this year. Indonesia last year dismissed a report in defence publication Janes that Russia has requested basing military aircraft in Papua, its easternmost province, after the issue caused concern in Australia. Papua is about 1,200 km (750 miles) north of the Australian city of Darwin. REUTERS Join ST's Telegram channel and get the latest breaking news delivered to you.

Putin hosts Indonesia's Prabowo in Russia in bid to deepen ties
Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto held talks with President Vladimir Putin in the northern Russian city of St Petersburg on Thursday as they explore ways to deepen what some officials have called a burgeoning strategic partnership. The deepening of ties between Russia and Indonesia , part of Moscow's bid to forge new relations with the Global South amid Western attempts to isolate it over the Ukraine war , has perturbed some powers such as Australia. Meeting in the Constantine Palace, Putin noted Indonesia's entry into Brics as a full member and said he was sure it would make a significant contribution to the grouping, which he said was gaining clout in the world. Prabowo thanked Putin for his support over Indonesia's entry to Brics and said that ties between the two countries were improving. Russia and Indonesia's foreign ministers, Sergei Lavrov and Sugiono, speaking in Moscow earlier this week, mentioned a possible strategic partnership between the two countries. He said around 380 Indonesian nationals currently in Tehran and other cities are facing mounting threats amid a worsening security situation, as Israel intensifies its attacks on both military targets and civilian areas. bootstrap slideshow 'Two days ago, I instructed the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Embassy of Indonesia in Tehran to assess plans and possible scenarios for the evacuation of Indonesian citizens,' he said in a video statement released by the ministry from St Petersburg, Russia. Speaking alongside Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov at a joint press conference in Moscow on Tuesday (June 17), Sugiono stressed the importance of diplomacy in resolving disputes. "We agreed that any escalation must be stopped and that disputes should be brought to the negotiation table,' he said, in remarks released by Indonesia's Foreign Affairs Ministry. His comments followed Lavrov's remarks on tensions in the Middle East and came as part of broader talks on regional and global issues, including cooperation under Brics and Asean frameworks. Sugiono said Indonesia was prepared to contribute to peacebuilding efforts and mediate where needed. "I also offer Indonesia's assistance in bridging communication gaps and differences, and in helping to reduce tensions both regionally and globally, so that we can contribute to a peaceful environment in various parts of the world,' he added. The two ministers pledged to deepen cooperation across key sectors, including politics and security, trade and investment, and food and energy security. They also agreed to upgrade ties to a Strategic Partnership. They welcomed closer official contacts between the two countries, saying these had led to new cooperation initiatives, including in education and library programmes. Sugiono's visit precedes President Prabowo Subianto's June 19 to 20 trip to meet President Vladimir Putin and attend the St Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF). The visit also marks the 75th anniversary of diplomatic ties between Indonesia and Russia, established in February 1950. _ Bernama
