Jordanian-Iraqi electricity interconnection to be fully operational in August

Ammon News - Director General of the National Electric Power Company (NEPCO), Sufyan Bataineh, announced on Tuesday that work on the electricity interconnection project between Jordan and Iraq (phase two) has almost reached its final stages. In a press statement, Bataineh expected that entire phase, which aims to supply Al-Qa'im region in Iraq with 400 kilovolt electricity, to be completed by the end of August stated that despite the challenges facing the Jordanian-Iraqi interconnection project, they were successfully overcome. He expects the amount of energy supplied to the Iraqi side after the project's completion to reach approximately 150-200 megawatts. He also emphasized the importance of the project within efforts to enhance regional integration in the energy sector, as the Jordanian electricity system is simultaneously linked to the Egyptian electricity grid via a 550 megavolt-ampere submarine cable at 400 kilovolts, in addition to a connection to the Syrian electricity grid via a single-circuit overhead transmission line at a similar voltage. In the same context, Jordan continues to supply the Palestinian side with electricity via the Ramah substation at a voltage of 33 kilovolts to feed loads in the Jericho and Jerusalem areas, amounting to approximately 80 megawatts. The Rutba area in Iraq is currently being supplied with electricity at a voltage of 132 kilovolts from the Risha substation in Jordan, with loads estimated at approximately 40 megawatts. The regional electricity interconnection is expected to be enhanced through the Jordanian-Saudi electricity interconnection project, with a capacity of 500 megawatts for the first phase, that will provide broad prospects for inter-regional electricity exchange, strengthen the Arab common market, and achieve security of electricity supply. The two sides are completing the preparation of the project's agreements, which will be signed and implemented.
