Sudbury Wolves receive OHL business award for world's largest goal light
Nathan Villeneuve's goal on Nov. 29 lit up the world's largest goal light for the very first time — an event that was recognized by the OHL at its 2024-25 business awards. Article content Sudbury Wolves owner and SWSE CEO Dario Zulich attended the league's annual business meetings this week at Hockley Valley Resort, where he accepted the Creative Investment Award for turning the former downtown water tower into a 120-foot-tall dynamic LED display that lights up whenever the home team scores a goal. Article content The light has also been put to use for other community events, including the Sudbury Santa Claus Parade and other local celebrations. Article content 'This goal light isn't just awesome for the sake of it (when) lighting up in red when the Wolves score, but it has now become a landmark even more so than what the water tower may have been before,' OHL commissioner Bryan Crawford said in a media release. 'It lit up in Oilers colours during the Stanley Cup Final, it will light up on special occasions (holidays, awareness days, etc.), and really is an unbelievable example of that connection between our clubs and our communities.' Kingston Harris commits to Sudbury Wolves
Article content Article content A player hailed as one of the highest-value picks in this year's OHL draft, forward Kingston Harris plans to continue to demonstrate his worth while wearing a Sudbury Wolves jersey. Article content Rob Papineau, the Wolves' vice-president of hockey operations and general manager, announced on Monday that Harris, a sixth-round choice in the OHL Priority Selection back in April, had committed to the club. Article content The fourth player to sign with Sudbury from the 2025 draft class, after first-round selection Brayden Bennett and second-rounders pick Vladimir Provorov and Parker Smith, Harris signed after a standout showing at the Wolves' prospect orientation camp in May. Article content Article content 'We were thrilled to be able to draft Kingston where we did,' Papineau said in a media release. 'He is one of the most skilled players from this year's draft. He has a great attitude about being a Wolf and had a dominant development camp, where he led in scoring. We lookforward to Kingston's development and future as a Sudbury Wolf.' Article content Article content A six-foot, 165-pound Oakville native who played for the Toronto Marlboros U16 AAA squad this past season, Harris had 17 goals and 20 assists in 30 regular-season games in the Greater Toronto Hockey League. Article content The 16-year-old centreman demonstrated his speed, skill and finishing ability once again at last month's camp, turning heads with a goal and two assists in the first scrimmage, then no fewer than four markers and a single helper in the second contest. Article content The Wolves also described Harris 'as a powerful forward who uses his skill and speed to create offence off the rush and cycle.' Article content 'His scanning and vision in the offensive zone allows him to see passes and plays developbefore others. Sudbury Wolves sign OHL second-rounder Parker Smith
Article content Article content A forward praised for raising his level of play in big games, hard-hustling Parker Smith will look to do the same for the Sudbury Wolves in the future. Article content Article content Rob Papineau, the Wolves' vice-president of hockey operations and general manager, announced on Monday that Smith, a second-round pick in the 2025 OHL Priority Selection this past April, had signed a scholarship and development agreement with the team. Article content Smith became the third player from this year's draft class to sign with the Wolves, following first-round selection Brayden Bennett and fellow second-round pick Vladimir Provorov. Article content Article content 'We are very happy that Parker has committed to the hockey club,' Papineau said in a media release. 'Parker followed up an outstanding season with a strong development camp. We are excited for his future with the team.' Article content Article content A 5-foot-10, 160-pound native of Waterloo, Smith was selected 38th overall this spring after a standout season with the Waterloo Wolves of the Alliance Hockey U16 AAA league. After recording 20 goals and 24 assists in only 28 regular-season games, he led Waterloo with 12 points in six playoff contests. Article content Papineau and company described the 16-year-old as 'a great goal-scoring winger who plays a physical game and loves getting under the skin of the opposition.' Sudbury Wolves prospects impress at orientation camp
Article content Brayden Bennett came as advertised with a combination of skill, speed and competitiveness. Article content Kingston Harris turned heads with his fleet feet and puck prowess in a high-scoring performance. Article content Caleb Deanovich displayed smooth skill and high-level hockey IQ. Article content Ethan Dean and Henry Doucet looked exactly as hoped — faster, stronger and seemingly ready for bigger roles at the OHL level. Article content Article content Eager for a glimpse at their newest crop of prospects, Sudbury Wolves staff and fans got an eyeful during a two-day prospect orientation camp this past weekend, with many youngsters meeting or even surpassing expectations over two days of practices, scrimmages and off-ice testing at Gerry McCrory Countryside Sports Complex. Article content Article content 'It's very nice here,' smiled Deanovich, the 16-year-old defenceman from Fond du Lac, Wisc. who was the Wolves' fifth-round choice in the 2025 OHL Priority Selection. Article content 'The coaches are very good, Scott Barney is an amazing coach and I like the city a lot.' Article content A right-shooting six-foot, 170-pounder who starred for the Chicago Reapers 15U AAA squad this season, Deanovich was among several U.S.-based standouts who helped to make up a roster of 35 players who converged on the Nickel City. Article content Most members of the 2025 and 2024 draft classes, a sprinkling of 2023 picks and a handful of free agents took part the camp, which included Blue and White games on Saturday night and Sunday morning. Article content Article content 'I wanted to see what the OHL is like, especially Sudbury,' Deanovich said. 'I never really got to experience it before, but the college portals have opened up now, so it's good to be here. It's definitely nice to see.' Article content Asked to described his game, he pointed to his speed, offensive skill and ability to see the ice as some of his best qualities. Article content 'I want to show my speed, my vision of the ice — and hopefully, we'll put the puck in a little bit.' Article content That they did, with Deanovich's Team White edged 6-5 on Saturday, then bouncing back with a 6-5 win over the Blue side the next morning. Article content Also a first-round pick in the recent United States Hockey League Futures Draft, Deanovich will have no shortage of options for the next phase of his hockey development, but NCAA rule changes will allow him to explore the OHL route without jeopardizing his Division I eligibility — an intriguing possibility for the youngster.
