Games Inbox: Is Mario Kart World too hard?
The Thursday letters page admits to preferring third person Resident Evil, as a reader asks which are Suda51's best games. The open world is strange in the way it's used but I've enjoyed the actual racing a whole lot. However, one issue I've not really heard anyone talk about is that I feel the game is probably a bit too hard in single-player. I consider myself a pretty decently skilled gamer – not amazing but at least a little above average for most games – but I've really struggled with everything above 50cc. It's not even the random elements, with blue shells at the finishing line and whatever, but I find that the higher you go the less mistakes you can afford to make, as catching up is surprisingly difficult. Knockout Tour is the worst, as I even started to find that difficult in 50cc, let alone the higher speeds. It's got to the point where I feel I have a better chance of winning online, against human players, which doesn't seem right. Is it just me being terrible against the AI or is the game actually a lot harder than you'd think? Tolly See the fear Being able to switch from first to third person in Resident Evil Requiem seems like the obvious choice, now that it's been revealed. I'll most play in third person, like I always do, but I imagine first person will be better for some action scenes and aiming and such like. First person is always described as being more immersive but I'm not sure that it actually makes that much difference in a horror game. Resident Evil 7 was scary, but no more so than some of the earlier games, while Resident Evil Village wasn't frightening at all. It wasn't trying to be (except for that bit) but nothing about being first person made it automatically more tense, at least not for me. A lot of the appeal in Resident Evil is the characters and so I think it's important to see them as much as possible. I can't even remember what the main character is in 7 and Village, as I don't think you ever see his face. But I remember Rose, because she is in a lot of cut scenes. The first person-only games were a worthy experiment but I hope it's days as the only option are over. Sully The last reveal So there we have it: the Nintendo Switch 2 is the fastest selling console of all time, despite coming out at a slow time of year for games (and not during a pandemic) and being expensive for a Nintendo console. Having a lot of stock obviously helped but I still think it's an impressive achievement. What matters now is where Nintendo goes from here. I agree that their line-up of games so far is not very impressive, which is not a problem I imagined the console having, knowing how well Nintendo supported the Switch 1. I hope there is a Nintendo Direct this month but I'm not sure it would have much on anything but the games that have already been announced. I feel Splatoon Raiders was probably the last reveal for the year, which is going to leave us hanging for a long time until there's any new news. I'm not sure I have enough free time to do a photo feature at the moment but maybe at some point. I'm glad he still remembers my Zelda ones. As for the Switch 2, I have mixed feelings. Mario Kart World is superb, especially the Knockout Tour, but it's noticeable we're lacking a big new single-player at the moment. For the first Switch, we had Zelda: Breath Of The Wild which made the launch much more exciting. It's a shame Donkey Kong Bananza wasn't out for launch. I really hope it's good. It'd help if Nintendo clarified if it was developed by the Mario team. I've seen a lot of complaints about the lack of Mario game announcement, but Bananza might very well be it. It was time. I'm loving the hardware and interface. This feels like the future, but I've still got feelings Nintendo-wise. Quest offers brilliant product and form and I can be the Batman or anything until I'm convinced to dip a toe into the Nintendo hype. D Dubya Flawed genius I thought the Romeo Is A Dead Man trailer was great, which has prompted me to look at more of Suda51's work. I know his games are always a bit rough around the edges, but which games are definitely worth playing and which are more curiosity only? I thought the State of Play had a great variety of games shown but was tainted by the spectre of Sony's profligacy in how they've managed their internal development teams. I think the most obvious reason for their silence is that they've nothing first party to show right now, but hopefully that changes from 2026 and beyond. Magnumstache GC: Our favourite thing he's done is still killer7, but we don't think it's directly available on any modern format. The first two No More Heroes games are good and so too is Lollipop Chainsaw, which just got a remaster. A lot of his stuff is quite flawed, but almost all of it is interesting. He's got a collaboration with Deadly Premonition's Swery65 coming out this year, called Hotel Barcelona, so we'll be very interested to see that. First timer I'm one of those people that has never played the two most recent Zelda games before and I'm definitely impressed by the Switch 2 Edition of Breath Of The Wild. You can tell it's an older game, a Wii U game, as you say, but the smooth frame rate is very nice and the sheer scale of the world is incredible. It seems endless at the moment and I can see from the map that I've visited maybe an eighth of it so far, which is amazing really because it already seems really big. I'm not even hating the breakable weapons that much either. Toaplan Arcade Collection Vol. 1 includes Tiger-Heli, Flying Shark, Twin Cobra, Fire Shark, Out Zone, FixEight, Dogyuun, and Batsugun. Beastiebat (PSN ID) Still playing: Devil May Cry 3 on Very Hard, Level 18 can do one; and just started Super Double Dragon, also surprisingly difficult GC: This is the first we've heard of this, but while Toaplan were a great developer they shut down in 1994, so all their games are pretty old. Tiger-Heli and its sequel Twin Cobra are what made their name, but Slap Fight and Flying Shark are perhaps the most recognisable to UK gamers, as they were ported to 8-bit computers. Almost all their stuff is good though, including Truxton (aka Tatsujin), the R-Type-esque Hellfire, Zero Wing (the source of the All Your Base meme), and Bubble Bobble style platformer Snow Bros. (which recently got a remake). Their final game, Batsugun, is regarded as the first true bullet hell shooter. Inbox also-ransEverything about this MindsEye game is so weird. I hadn't heard about it until this week and it seems a complete mess. Why did they release it at such a stupid time? I thought the guy in charge was some kind of seasoned industry veteran? Tacle Now that we've had a new Marvel fighting game announced, and Invincible has one, it's high time that we got a new DC game. I don't particularly want Injustice 3, but I'd love a DC Vs. Capcom game. Would be a fun way to get back at Marvel, after their betrayal. Suda51 returns with a sword-swinging, gun-slinging, sci-fi action game
Grasshopper Manufacture founder Suda51 made an appearance at Sony's State of Play showcase to reveal Romeo is a Dead Man — a game that has no relation to the 2000 action masterpiece Romeo Must Die , as far as we can tell. Romeo is a Dead Man stars Romeo Stargazer, a dude who was pulled back from the brink of death, gained time-shattering powers, and became a universe-hopping special agent for the FBI. Using a sword and guns, Romeo battles various sci-fi robots and beasts across multiple universes, featuring hyper-bloody gameplay. By the time I finished watching the debut trailer for Romeo is a Dead Man , I'd completely forgotten that it started out with a hand-drawn cartoon family enjoying a nice curry dinner. It quickly devolves into a black-, white- and red-splattered fever dream of exploding heads and doorway demons, providing the first hint that this is definitely a Suda51 project. Grasshopper Manufacture's previous games include Killer7, No More Heroes , Lollipop Chainsaw and Killer is Dead , and its latest release seems to fit right in with these titles. Super Meat Boy was one of the first indie game franchises to take the world by storm, so it's awesome to see this little guy make a comeback on Nintendo Switch. You'll need to navigate a gauntlet of brutally tough action platforming levels and boss battles, with new procedurally generated endless runner stages giving this entry in the series its name. Our No More Heroes 3 review said that while this game isn't perfect, it is a ton of fun thanks to its bombastic style and awesome boss battles. Game designer Suda51's unique style is on full show here, which you'll probably either love or hate. The sequel to 2017's Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle, Sparks of Hope once again reunites the residents of the Mushroom Kingdom with the zany Rabbids. This time the unexpected allies are venturing into the stars for an intergalactic adventure. Offering colorful strategy combat, and plenty of planets to explore, Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope is one of the most overlooked games on Nintendo Switch. A farming sim with a twist — in this game you don't grow crops, you grow monsters. Once you've raised a bunch, you'll need to command them in battle to take on tough boss battles. This game is also notable for its art design by Hiro Mashima, the artist behind the popular Fairy Tail manga. A full remake of the original Super Mario RPG released in 1996 for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES), this role-playing game sees Mario, Bowser, Peach and some new friends embark on an adventure to repair a wish-granting star. With updated graphics, gameplay and new cinematics, Super Mario RPG has never looked (or played) this well, but the original game's charms have been carefully retained as well. Three of the best superhero games ever made come to the Nintendo Switch in the Batman Arkham Trilogy. This collection brings together Batman: Arkham Asylum, Batman: Arkham City and Batman: Arkham Knight alongside all the DLC released for all three games. That's a whole load of Bat-action in a single package. Just be aware that Arkham Knight has some performance issues on Nintendo Switch, but the other two games run well. One of 2022's unexpected cult hits, Stray casts you as a curious cat in a world filled with humanoid robots. There's a lot to like in this cyberpunk adventure, from its visually-striking setting, to its nonverbal storytelling, to its dedicated 'meow' button. The gameplay is simple, but some platforming and puzzle challenges should keep players engaged during Stray's relatively short playtime. Note: this deal is for a physical copy, but you can get the digital version for $29 at Nintendo. Ty is back. This collection of remade 3D platformers look better than ever and feel incredible to play, with a memorable outback setting and plenty of fun characters in tow. This HD collection also adds a Hardcore Mode for an even tougher challenge! WarioWare Get It Together is crazy, and that's why we love it. This game is packed with fast paced mini challenges that you'll need seriously quick reaction times to get right. You can team up with a friend or go it solo and try to complete them all. This is one of the games that helped get many people through a tough couple of years, letting you jet off to an untamed island courtesy of business raccoon Tom Nook. It's up to you to bring civilization to that island, and turn into a villager's check: $52 @ Amazon The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening on the Nintendo Switch is a lovingly crafted remaster of the 1993 classic. Take control of Link as he explores the mysterious Koholint Island, where he'll traverse eight puzzling dungeons as well as an expansive check: $59 @ Best Buy If you're getting through Mario games faster than Nintendo can make them, then this is the game for you. Build your own levels in the style of several different 2D Mario games, share them online and then test out others. Ultimate by name, ultimate by nature. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate brings together every single fighter in the franchise's history for a showdown of epic proportions. This hugely popular party game is now on sale. This side-scrolling adventure is a wonderfully refreshing spin on the classic Mario formula. Venturing to the Flower Kingdom, you'll discover stage-altering Wonder Flowers which can warp levels, create new platforming challenges and even turn Mario into an elephant. Playable in up to four-player co-op, Super Mario Bros. Wonder is a platforming marvel for the entire family and one of the very best Nintendo Switch games you can play now. Updated graphics and some welcome quality-of-life improvements make Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door on Nintendo Switch the best way to experience this classic RPG. Whoa, A Ton Of Cool New Games Just Got Announced For Xbox Game Pass
It's looking like a good Game Pass harvest this year, especially because Microsoft's backlog of big first-party Xbox games like Doom: The Dark Ages and Fable are coming in 2025. But tons of other cool stuff is headed to the subscription service as well, and a bunch of them were announced during the company's ID@Xbox showcase on Monday. The event was an indie cornucopia of new game, trailer, and release date announcements, including a bunch of cool-looking stuff that will be included day-and-date in Game Pass Ultimate and PC in the weeks and months ahead. Here's everything new announced for the Netflix-like library of games today: 33 Immortals - March 18 Descenders Next - April 9 Blue Prince - April 10 Tempopo - April 17 Revenge of the Savage Planet - May 8 Moonlighter 2: The Endless Vault - TBD 2025 Tanuki: Pon's Summer - TBD 2025 Ultimate Sheep Racoon - TBD Echo Weaver - TBD New Game Pass additions weren't the only interesting news out of the event. Other noteworthy announcements included 2024 hit poker roguelike Balatro joining Game Pass today, as well as the top-rated multiplayer gambling horror game Buckshot Roulette joining the service when it gets ported to Xbox in the near future. We also got new release windows. Hotel Barcelona, the 2.5D action-platformer collaboration between legendary designers Suda51 and Swery, got a release window of 2025 while Ratatan, the spiritual successor to Patapon, is coming this year too. In the near-term, Tron: Catalyst, the upcoming isometric action game from Bithell Games, announced a release date of June 17, with Herding, the atmospheric puzzle game from the FAR: Lone Sails team following soon after. Meanwhile, the beautiful solarpunk road trip van sim Outbound will launch in 2026, which is also when slice-of-life record store sim Wax Heads is scheduled to arrive. Oh, and the ever beautiful-looking Woodo, a cozy game about diorama puzzles, will hit Xbox alongside its PC release. Finally, the latest ID@Xbox event also had two new premieres. The first was for Rockbeasts, a narrative-driven music RPG about managing a band of '90s up-and-coming rock stars who are also animals. The second was for The Lonesome Guild, a party-based action-RPG in which you play a ghost guiding a group of whimsical adventurers through a crumbling world. But the game that most caught my eye during today's showcase was Echo Weaver. The 2D 'Metroidbrainia' was first revealed back in 2024 and it continues to look very neat. You have to uncover secrets and manage the clock to liberate yourself from a glitched time loop. It's the next game from the creators of the beautiful puzzle adventure The Wild at Heart and it looks like it could be something special. . For the latest news, Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
