Is CGI-Heavy Big Bang Theory Spinoff Poised to Be a Superhero Satire?
The latest Big Bang Theory universe expansion has the potential to look and feel unlike any offshoot that came before it — and based on several clues, I'm beginning to think it will. Whereas Young Sheldon served as a prequel chronicling Sheldon Cooper's childhood, and sequel-to-the-prequel Georgie & Mandy's First Marriage has continued that story but shifted focus to Sheldon's older brother and sister-in-law, HBO Max's Stuart Fails to Save the Universe will serve as a direct continuation, and pick up after the events of Big Bang's 2019 series finale. More from TVLine Mayim Bialik Talks Reuniting With Melissa Rauch on Night Court and the Possibility of Reprising Amy on New Big Bang Theory Spinoff Big Bang Theory Spinoff Cast Unites for First Table Read in New Photos — Here's Everything We Know So Far And Just Like That EP Talks Working With Season 3's Top Scene Stealer: Carrie's Cat As previously reported, Kevin Sussman (aka Stuart) will be joined on the show by fellow franchise vets Lauren Lapkus (Denise), Brian Posehn (Bert Kibbler) and John Ross Bowie (Barry Kripke) — a quartet that, with the exception of Sussman and Lapkus, rarely (if ever) interacted. And while plot details remain under wraps, we do know that Season 1 has already been written ahead of an official series order, and screenwriter Zak Penn — whose myriad credits include The Avengers, Ready Player One and Free Guy — wrote all 10 episodes with original series co-creators Chuck Lorre and Bill Prady. Earlier this week, Lorre let slip that Stuart Fails… will feature 'a lot of CGI' — and that piece of intel, combined with the prospective series' title, leads me to believe that this new show won't be rooted in reality, per se. Instead, it will see the perpetually down-on-his-luck comic book store owner conceive of his own graphic novel centered on a B-team Justice League — a motley crew of underestimated superheroes who look a lot like Stuart, Denise, Bert and Kripke, and who all have started to believe what everyone else thinks of them: that they're incapable of greatness. But all that will change once the future of humanity is called into question by an otherworldly threat, and the actual Justice League is preoccupied/unable to save the day. And perhaps Stuart will narrate, borrowing a narrative device from Young Sheldon (whose series finale revealed that Dr. Cooper was recounting his East Texas upbringing as part of his memoir). So, that's my working (Big Bang) theory! TVLine will keep you posted as we learn more about Stuart Fails to Save the Universe — and whether my prediction is right. But for now, leave a comment and let me know what sort of spinoff you're anticipating. Big Bang Theory fans divided over spinoff casting bombshell after title reveals focus on minor character
Big Bang Theory fans are split over the latest casting news for the upcoming Max spinoff, which will focus on a minor character from the beloved sitcom. Shortly after the show was announced as a spinoff centered around Kevin Sussman's Stuart Bloom and given the title Stuart Fails to Save the Universe, Warner Bros. Television boss Channing Dungey hinted that the series' timeline might allow for appearances from original characters. Unlike previous Big Bang Theory spinoffs Young Sheldon and Georgie and Mandy's First Marriage, which were prequels happening before the original's timeline, Stuart Fails to Save the Universe marks a significant shift. The Stuart-centric series could bring back familiar faces like Johnny Galecki, Jim Parsons, Kaley Cuoco, Simon Helberg, Kunal Nayyar, or any of the original characters, all of whom had longstanding relationships with Stuart. When asked if the old gang would 'pop in' during a recent interview with Deadline, Dungey teased with a five-word response: 'I would never say never.' With Penny (Cuoco) and Leonard (Galecki) potentially showing up in Stuart's world, fans quickly took to social media to express their thoughts. One Reddit user wrote, 'I'd want to watch it just to see who makes guest cameos.' Another fan shared concerns about the OG characters being altered for the spinoff: 'Hopefully they don't change too much about the characters reprising their roles.' One fan even compared the new show to a major sitcom, writing, 'This is like creating a Friends spinoff set around Gunther…' referencing the side character from the iconic series starring Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Matt LeBlanc, Lisa Kudrow, David Schwimmer, and the late Matthew Perry. Others questioned how many spinoffs can truly succeed. One user posted, 'I'm intrigued how much more Chuck Lorre can milk/expand this franchise down the line (unless 'Fails to Save the Universe' is a hint this may be the last spinoff).' Of course, not everyone is on board with the spinoff. One fan said, 'I feel a whole show on Stuart would get very old very quick. He was okay in small doses.' The casting news comes on the heels of John Ross Bowie, 53, who played the plasma physicist Barry Kripke, joining the upcoming series. With Penny (Cuoco) and Leonard (Galecki) potentially showing up in Stuart's world, fans quickly took to social media to express their thoughts Bowie, who was a recurring presence throughout much of The Big Bang Theory, was downgraded to a guest role in seasons four and ten before the show concluded. One of Barry's standout characteristics was his rhotacism, which gave him an Elmer Fudd-like charm as he swapped 'R' and 'L' sounds with 'W' when speaking. Barry first caught attention in season two's The Killer Robot Instability, where he discovered the gang had built a robot. In response, he created his own robot, the Kripke Krippler, setting up a battle for supremacy. Bowie has signed a talent holding deal with WBTV, ensuring his availability should the series make it through any remaining hurdles, Deadline reports. Shortly after the news broke, Bowie shared a screenshot of the article on Instagram to celebrate. He joked in the caption, 'Exciting news from @deadline… pardon me… deadwine,' imitating his character's signature speech. The spinoff has also added notable talent to its team, with Zak Penn—known for X2: X-Men United, The Avengers, and Ready Player One—joining Bill Prady, co-creator of The Big Bang Theory. Together with Chuck Lorre, they'll co-write the pilot script and executive produce the series.

The Big Bang Theory Spinoff Reveals Stuart-Centric Title — Are You a Fan?
The highly anticipated Big Bang Theory spinoff is keeping its premise under wraps — but now we know that it will most definitely center on Kevin Sussman's luckless comic book store owner, Stuart Bloom. As our sister site Deadline was first to report, the Max sequel series will be titled… Stuart Fails to Save the Universe. Sussman will reprise his titular role, opposite fellow franchise vets John Ross Bowie (Barry Kripke), Lauren Lapkus (Denise) and Brian Posehn (Bert). More from TVLine The Big Bang Theory Spinoff on Max: Everything We Know So Far Big Bang Theory's John Ross Bowie to Reprise Barry Kripke on Max Spinoff The Sex Lives of College Girls Cancelled at Max After 3 Seasons - Could It Be Saved? As previously reported, feature writer Zak Penn (The Avengers, Ready Player One, Free Guy) will pen the pilot script with original series co-creators Chuck Lorre and Bill Prady. The potential offshoot, which has not yet received a formal series order, would be the fourth entry in the TBBT universe — following The Big Bang Theory (2007-2019), prequel series Young Sheldon (2017-2024), and Young Sheldon spinoff Georgie & Mandy's First Marriage (2024-) — and the first made exclusively for a streaming service. Though further details remain scarce, there's reason to be excited. After all, when Lorre told TVLine in 2019 that a solid spinoff conceit failed to materialize before The Big Bang Theory wrapped production, he explained that 'unless there was a creative reason to do it — a wonderfully, wonderfully creative reason to do it — than the only reason [to do it] is economics, and that's not good enough.' That leads us to believe that the sitcom titan has a pretty spectacular idea up his sleeve — and now we have a title.
