Iraq urges US to prevent Israeli Airspace violations

According to a statement by the Iraqi Foreign Ministry, during a meeting with Steven H. Fagin, the chargé d'affaires at the US Embassy in Baghdad, the Deputy Foreign Minister for Bilateral Relations, Mohammed Hussein Bahr Al-Uloom, expressed Baghdad's deep concern over what he described as repeated Israeli incursions into Iraqi skies. 'A recent breach of sovereignty was recorded on Friday, when Israeli warplanes reportedly flew over the holy cities of Najaf and Karbala, continuing southward.' Bahr Al-Uloom stressed that the infringement 'not only undermines Iraq's sovereignty but also poses a direct threat to civil aviation safety,' particularly over Basra International Airport, which is currently the primary air gateway for returning stranded Iraqi citizens and outbound travelers. 'This is a matter of national security and the safety of civilian air traffic,' he emphasized. He also urged the US to 'take all necessary measures to halt these violations and enhance Iraq's capacity to deter threats to its sovereignty, territory, and airspace,' citing the 2008 US-Iraq Strategic Framework Agreement as the foundation for cooperation on such matters.

'Participants in the latest meeting of the Iran-aligned Coordination Framework, which included al-Sudani, reached a unanimous consensus that the United States must uphold the terms of the agreement.' Notably, the security partnership between Iraq and the United States is grounded in key agreements, particularly the 2008 Strategic Framework Agreement (SFA) and the Status of Forces Agreement (SOFA), which govern military collaboration and troop presence.

'Iraq has asked the United States to take its role in preventing Israeli aircraft from violating Iraqi airspace in accordance with the Strategic Framework Agreement,' the Iraqi News Agency reported, citing a government source. The source stressed the importance of respecting Iraq's sovereignty and the integrity of its airspace, adding that 'the US, as the country leading the international coalition against ISIS, is obliged to uphold its responsibilities and prevent any violations that compromise Iraqi sovereignty or endanger its security.'

During the meeting, Al-Sudani strongly condemned the Israeli attack, calling it an act of aggression and a serious violation of international law. He warned that such actions undermine regional and global security, especially as they occur during ongoing diplomatic negotiations. The Prime Minister stressed that the timing of the strike reflects an intentional escalation that risks dragging the entire region into a broader conflict. In response, both the U.S. Chargé d'Affaires and the Coalition Commander reiterated the United States' non-involvement in the strike and affirmed Washington's commitment to keeping Iraq out of the conflict, in accordance with the U.S.-Iraq Strategic Framework Agreement. Al-Hol Camp's future: Iraq to convene Geneva conference

According to a statement from the NSA, Al-Araji confirmed that the Geneva conference will focus on returning camp residents to their countries of origin. He also reiterated Iraq's support for a negotiated agreement between Iran and the United States through dialogue. Since 2021, the Iraqi government—working alongside international organizations—has begun repatriating Iraqi families from Al-Hol to Iraq, where they are received at the Jadaa camp for psychological and social rehabilitation. However, the process has faced repeated objections, particularly from families of ISIS victims in Nineveh who fear the return of these individuals to their communities. For his part, Fagin praised the Iraqi government's proactive role in managing both internal and external challenges, the statement noted. Both sides discussed recent regional and international developments and reaffirmed their support for stability in Syria. They also stressed the need to activate the Strategic Framework Agreement signed between Iraq and the United States and to promote investment in Iraq, affirming that the Inherent Resolve mission (the US military's operational name for the global war against ISIS) would proceed according to the agreed timeline between the Iraqi government and the International Coalition.
