Trainer Emma-Lee Browne confident Statuario can reverse result on Femminile in Queensland Derby rematch
They're the Pakenham pair ready to pack a powerful punch in Saturday's Group 1 Queensland Derby at Eagle Farm. Victorian horses Statuario and Femminile delivered a thriller in this month's South Australian Derby, with the Phillip Stokes-trained filly Femminile holding on to win the major at $19 odds. • Racenet iQ members get full access to our Pro Tips service, where Greg Polson and our team of professional punters provide daily tips with fully transparent return on investment statistics. Statuario's co-trainer Emma-Lee Browne is hoping they can again jag the quinella on Saturday, although this time she wants her grey gelding to take the chocolates. Blake Shinn, the Doomben Cup winner on Queensland hero Antino, will jump aboard Femminile while John Allen will ride Statuario, the $6 early favourite for the 2400m race ahead of King Of Thunder ($7), Party Crasher ($8) and Femminile ($9.50). Browne, who trains in partnership with husband David, said Statuario had travelled 'super' to the Gold Coast and would be primed to turn the tables on Femminile in the Queensland Derby. • 'You don't know how they're going to cope with the travel until they've had that race-day pressure but he hasn't missed a feed and his weight is super,' she said while enjoying an outing with her family at Gold Coast tourist attraction Dreamworld. Statuario was the warm favourite for the SA Derby but got caught behind horses on the inside of the track before eventually finding space and motoring home to finish just three-quarters of a length behind Femminile. They're a tight-knit racing community at Pakenham and the rivalry between stables is definitely more friendly than fierce. Stokes, who grew up at a cattle station near Marree in northern South Australia, even helped arrange the transport to Queensland for both his horses and Statuario. 'You've got to have everything go right in a Group 1 and you've got to have a bit of luck on your side,' Browne said about the $1m SA Derby (2500m) at Morphettville on May 3. 'But at least it was a Pakenham victory – we've taken that, with Phillip Stokes being from both places. 'We're incredibly lucky down at Pakenham, it's a fantastic group and we all support each other. It makes a difference – it's a good atmosphere. 'Phillip pretty much organised my trip up here so that's been incredibly helpful. 'We're hoping we can quinella the Queensland Derby too but we still want to turn the tables this time.' Browne said the four-week gap between races was ideal for Statuario and she was encouraged by the path of the Mick Price and Michael Kent Jr-trained Warmonger, who finished runner-up in last year's SA Derby before winning the Queensland edition. 'The way he (Statuario) travelled home from Adelaide and the way he bounced around the track made us think 'OK let's see how he pushes on',' she said. 'It was good to have the four weeks between races because you could really see how he was doing. 'We're very happy with the horse, he's had a super prep. It'd be a cherry on top if he goes well this Saturday.'

South Australian Derby result and replay: Femminile wins
The result in the $1 million Group 1 South Australian Derby (2500m) at Morphettville on Saturday was a tale of two rides. Local jockey Lachlan Neindorf stole the show aboard the filly Femminile which defeated the fast-finishing favourite Statuario with Lavalier back in third. The vital moment in the race came approaching the 600m when Statuario's jockey, four-time South Australian winning rider John Allen, allowed his mount to drift off the fence and quickly Femminile grabbed the spot he vacated back to the inside. From there Femminile didn't go around a horse while Statuario went the long way round before charging but running out of ground late. Femminile, trained by Phillip Stokes, is a three-year-old filly by Dundeel and the win was her second from 10 starts, taking her earnings to more than $660,000.

Home Tour: A Dutch colonial-inspired landed home in Menteng, Jakarta
Above The stately corridor sets the tone at this landed house Above The skylights brings natural light inside the landed home The design brief called for a balance between conservation regulations and the client's preference for a Dutch colonial-inspired home. 'To gain an understanding of colonial influences within this former Dutch East Indies colony, we researched conserved colonial-era buildings in Jakarta and also studied the architectural and interior detailing of black-and-white houses in Singapore,' explains Glynis Ng, founder of Zync Studio + Workshop. The homeowners had first engaged the studio in 2004 through a referral for the rejuvenation of their former family home. This initial project led to a long-term collaboration that involved the studio designing both their residential and office spaces. In case you missed it: Malayan shophouses: The architectural heritage of Singapore and Malaysia Above The marble-inlaid foyer makes entering the home a stately procession through an art gallery Above The dark, art deco-inspired staircase and balustrade, paired with the white wainscoted walls, evoke a sense of colonial splendour Above The architecture of the landed home is brainchild of Jakarta-based FusionArc Architects Stepping into the foyer, one is immediately greeted by an air of quiet splendour courtesy of its classic interior design elements. An 11m-long corridor inlaid with Statuario, Grey Emperador and Black Marquina marble varieties creates a striking black-and-white geometric pattern that guides one along. The monochromatic palette is softened by rich textures—wainscoting that lines the walls with timeless elegance, and a pair of high oval-back Christopher Guy armchairs that sits beneath an antique mirror. The wrought iron handrails on the grand staircase introduce a sculptural element, drawing the eye skywards to the home's upper corridor. This interplay of materials, light and carefully placed furnishings sets the tone for a residence that is both stately and welcoming. Above The interior's predominantly white surfaces allow graphic statement pieces such as an oversized botanical-patterned rug and whimsical animal-shaped decor to shine The homeowners also requested the subtle incorporation of Chinese-inspired elements, referencing an earlier project undertaken by the studio. 'The Chinese-inspired hints were subtly injected throughout the interiors to complement the overall colonial revival aesthetic without overpowering it,' Ng shares. These details appear in the form of an Eastern cloud-motif divider in the guest lounge, a scroll coffee table, a pair of Ming-style chests framing the living room's transition to the patio, and rattan-woven coffee tables and Eastern-style vases throughout the abode. Designed as a multipurpose space, it serves different functions from sunrise to starlit night, including as a Pilates and yoga studio in the morning, a tea lounge in the afternoon, a pre-dinner gathering area in the evening, and a reading zone on rainy days. 'This space transforms as the day progresses—whether it is as a sun-drenched breakfast spot in the morning, or an idyllic reading nook on a rainy afternoon,' says Ng. Above Furnished with leather-woven chairs from Moie Living and a rattan-inlay coffee table, the landed home's gazebo serves as a versatile space from which to admire the ever-changing sky Keen to support local artisans, the homeowners curated a mix of locally crafted as well as imported furniture throughout the landed home; these include products acquired from Home Bar Living in Kemang. They decided on pieces that blend traditional craftsmanship with modern design sensibilities. The interior design reflects meticulous craftsmanship through its material palette. The aforementioned marble-floored foyer establishes a geometric visual motif that is subtly referenced in other design elements, including the lift interior's marble detailing, the wrought iron stair railings, and custom-designed furniture pieces such as the dining table base and interior veneer-inlaid dividers. In the living room, a large wool-and-silk carpet in eight shades of green harmonises with the Brewster Green main door and Verde Alpi marble accents. Adding a personal touch, the homeowners transformed framed Hermès scarves from their collection into striking decorative elements, elevating these coveted pieces into works of art. 'With travel borders closed, we had to rely on extensive coordination with the Jakarta-based teams. It was challenging, but ultimately reinforced our adaptability and commitment to design integrity,' Ng reflects. The residence was completed in April 2024 after 55 months. Among the most notable spaces in the house, the foyer and the gazebo stand out for their attention to detail and well-executed spatial flow; the latter particularly because of its unbridled versatility, shifting according to daily routines and seasonal changes. To the homeowners, the Gazebo House represents a residence that respects historical influences while being tailored to present-day living requirements. It is a sanctuary in which tradition and functionality coexist, with a wealth of spaces designed for both aesthetic appeal and practical use. Stars aligned for Statuario
ADELAIDE A dominant last-start Listed Stakes victory over 2,400m at Caulfield has given wife-and-husband training partners, Emma-Lee and David Browne, confidence that Statuario deserves to be favourite in the A$1 million (S$836,000) Group 1 South Australian Derby (2,500m) at Morphettville on May 3. With three wins, two seconds and one third from his 10 starts, the D'argento three-year-old won two consecutive races with Damian Lane up at Cranbourne in September 2024. But he scored the most significant victory last start with a 2¼-length triumph on April 5. He went forward early and was sitting fourth at the 800m and 400m marks before cruising to the lead to score easily. Before that, he was third in the Group 2 Alister Clark Stakes over 2,040m at Moonee Valley, beaten about two lengths. Emma-Lee Browne said they could not be happier with the draw in barrier 3 and added that their grey gelding was in tip-top order. She was also excited about crossing the border from their base in Melbourne to tackle one of Adelaide's time-honoured features. His latest victory ended thoughts that he might struggle to run out a strong 2,400m. "After he got the 2,400m, we are hoping an extra 100m won't matter," said Browne. "I had my concerns going into the last start, it was definitely something playing on our mind. But, given he did it so well, it just does give you a little bit more confidence. "We are just hoping he gets a nice trip like he did last time. (Jockey) John (Allen) got him in the perfect spot last time. "From our barrier, it doesn't look like he will have to work too hard and he should be able to get him into a nice position." Browne said if you wanted to "nitpick" Statuario's Caulfield win, he did get all the favours in the running and it turned into a little bit of a sit-and-sprint that favoured him. "But I just did love the way he sort of stretched away from them," she said. "In some of his races, he has tended to loaf around at the end a little bit, but he was a lot more focused." Statuario had a 1,200m jump-out at Pakenham on April 22 and was ridden by the Brownes' regular track rider, their daughter Lucy. Come race day, the reins will be handed over in no safer pair of hands for such a race. Irish hoop Allen holds the record of most wins with four posted over six years - Howard Be Thy Name (2016), Volatile Mix (2017), Russian Camelot (2020) and Explosive Jack (2021). Browne said there were a lot of horses in the field they respected, including the Danny O'Brien-trained Politely Dun, who ran second to Statuario at Caulfield and the James Cummings-trained Lavalier. Lavalier picked up plenty of admirers when finishing off strongly to be less than half-a-length from the highly talented Athanatos in the Group 3 Chairman's Stakes (2,000m) at Morphettville on April 26. American Wolf, a New Zealand-bred by Tivaci and trained by Trent Busuttin and Natalie Young, stepped up from a 2,000m maiden victory at Ballarat in country Victoria to win the Listed VRC St Leger (2,800m) at Flemington on April 25 and is now on the short back-up. Busuttin and Young also have another two runners in the race - Confetti Garden and Compressing, who will have familiar Kranji face Daniel Moor in the irons. Last year's Group 1 Victoria Derby (2,500m) winner Goldrush Guru has since failed to repeat that Flemington form. The son of American Pharoah went to the front after overracing in last week's Chairman's Stakes to finish fifth of 15, beaten about two and a half lengths. He has drawn poorly in barrier 18 and has had no luck in his past two races. HKJC

‘I've been lucky': Modest hoop John Allen in quest for fifth South Australian Derby
Don't miss out on the headlines from Horse Racing. Followed categories will be added to My News. A modest John Allen believes he's simply been 'lucky' in Adelaide, the scene of seven of his 20 Group 1 victories in the saddle. Allen scored a first Group 1 win in the 2016 South Australian Derby aboard Howard Be Thy Name, and nine years later, the Irish hoop is poised for a remarkable fifth Derby win aboard favourite Statuario in Saturday's $1m three-year-old feature. • PUNT LIKE A PRO: Become a Racenet iQ member and get expert tips – with fully transparent return on investment statistics – from Racenet's team of professional punters at our Pro Tips section. SUBSCRIBE NOW! It's no surprise Allen, who is based in Victoria, enjoys returning to Morphettville. He's striking at 33.3 per cent in Group 1 races in Adelaide, with seven wins from 21 rides. He won the Robert Sangster Stakes and Australasian Oaks in 2023, along with The Goodwood in 2020, handing him SA's quartet of Group 1s. 'I've been lucky down there, I've got on some good horses,' Allen, who won the 2021 Derby aboard Explosive Jack, said. 'I really enjoy riding on the main track at Morphettville, I've had a lot of luck around it, maybe it's just the way I ride a bit – it's certainly been a happy hunting ground for me. 'It's hard to believe it's nine years ago now (first Group 1), I've had plenty of luck in Adelaide every time, you have to get on the right horses but it's been a lucky place for me.' John Allen celebrates winning the 2020 South Australian Derby with Russian Camelot. Picture: Brenton Edwards • Gluyas' Guru to push on to Derby Allen is better equipped than most when it comes to profiling a Derby horse, and Statuario, a son of D'argento, has given the indication that he fits the Derby mould. 'He seems to be taking the right steps, it's a different formline to the Chairman's (Stakes), it will be interesting to see how they measure up,' he said. 'I suppose he's probably the in-form horse going into the race so hopefully he can produce on Saturday.' Statuario was an impressive winner of the Galilee Series Final (2400m) last start at Caulfield, the two-length win suggested that he will handle Saturday's 2500m Derby journey. 'We had a bit of a concern about him running the 2400m, obviously the Derby will be a high pressure race, hopefully he can handle that,' he said. 'He was impressive (last start), it probably didn't look the strongest of races, but the form out of it hasn't actually been too bad. 'He had the right run, but he still won it pretty dominantly, I think it's a good lead-up hopefully.' • Godolphin moves to public training model, Cummings to start anew Pakenham trainers Emma-Lee and David Browne are chasing their first Group 1 win in Australia since relocating from New Zealand in 2022, and Allen would love to be the jockey to deliver it with Statuario. 'They made the move over here to Australia so I suppose it's a big race for them to be on the big stage and show what they are about,' Allen said. 'Their horse is in great form at the moment, I've only really started riding for them in the last few months, they'll have the horse in tip top shape come Saturday.' Statuario has drawn barrier three, and is a $4.20 favourite with Sportsbet. Originally published as Luck of the Irish? Jockey John Allen chases fifth South Australian Derby with Statuario
