BJP goverments targeting Bengalis; labelling them Bangladeshi for speaking their tongue: Mamata
Accusing Bharatiya Janata Party governments in different parts of the country of targeting Bengali-speaking citizens, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said on Monday that state governments are labelling residents of Bengal with valid documents as illegal Bangladeshi immigrants. Addressing the State Assembly, the Chief Minister said that BJP ruled governments are depriving migrant workers of their right to earn a livelihood despite their possessing voter IDs, PAN, and Aadhaar cards. 'Despite having all the legal documents. Bengalis are being pushed into Bangladesh. If anyone speaks Bengali, they become Bangladeshi? This is happening in every state that has double engine governments,' Ms. Banerjee said. Double engine discrimination The Chief Minister had in the past alleged that migrant workers from the State are being targeted in BJP ruled states. On this occasion Ms. Banerjee accused the double engine states of language based discrimination. Her remarks came a day after three residents of West Bengal, working in Mumbai were allegedly forced into Bangladesh by the BSF. The migrant workers, two from Murshidabad and one from Purba Bardhaman, however, were repatriated on Sunday to West Bengal after intervention by the State authorities. The Chief Minister also targeted the West Bengal State BJP president, Sukanta Majumadar, calling him a 'half minister.' Mr. Majumdar is the Minister of State for Education & Development of the North Eastern Region and has been embroiled in a controversy for hurling a poster resembling a pair of slippers towards a police officer during protests near the Chief Minister's residence. 'There is a half-central minister who is in love with slippers. Why don't they (BJP) open slipper shops?' she said without naming anyone. Denial of central funds Ms. Banerjee spoke out on the denial of central funds to the State. She said that the Union Government sent 155 teams to the State looking for corruption and found nothing. She stressed that funds for MGNREGA have been stopped by the Centre and the State Government has subsequently started its own scheme named 'Karmashree,' as part of which it has created 1.5 crore mandays under various schemes. 'Bengal has topped road and rural housing project rankings five times in a row... No one can derail us or stop us from realising our dreams,' the Chief Minister said. Ms. Banerjee also spoke about the political courtesy her party displayed over the Air India plane tragedy in Ahmedabad. 'BJP looted the country and sold it. Even on the day so many died in Gujarat, we didn't speak a word. That's called political courtesy,' Ms. Banerjee said. BJP legislators raised slogans while the Chief Minister was addressing the State Assembly. During proceedings in the House on Monday two BJP legislators were escorted out of the House. The BJP legislator Manoj Oraon was suspended for a day by the Speaker Biman Banerjee for unruly behaviour.

T.N. Governor has not changed despite Supreme Court verdict, is sitting on Kalaignar University Bill: CM Stalin
Stating that Tamil Nadu Governor R.N. Ravi is yet to give assent to the Bill adopted by the State Assembly proposing the establishment of Kalaignar University at Kumbakonam in Thanjavur district, Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, on Monday (June 16, 2025) observed that Mr. Ravi has not changed even after the Supreme Court verdict (on the Governor's powers to grant assent to Bills). The decision to name the new university after the former Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi was taken by the elected MLAs, cutting across party lines, on the floor of the Legislative Assembly. The Bill was adopted unanimously and was sent to the Governor for his assent. But even after 40 days, the Governor has not given his assent till now, despite several reminders, Mr. Stalin said, while speaking at a government function in Thanjavur. The Chief Minister said attempts to take up the matter with the Governor through the Minister for Higher Education did not materialise as the Governor is yet to grant an appointment for the Minister. Had the Governor granted assent to the Bill, the foundation stone for the new university could have been laid today along with other new projects. 'We will wait with patience; if we run out of patience, we will force the Governor to give in,' Mr. Stalin asserted. The State government was executing its duties without fail, despite the Union government's partiality in allocation of funds, Mr. Stalin said. He announced that a new scheme, christened, Ungaludan Stalin would be launched on July 15, wherein special camps would be organised to receive petitions from the public and take government schemes and services to the doorstep of the people . While 3,768 camps would be organised in urban areas, 6,232 camps would be held in rural areas. Women eligible to avail assistance under the Kalaignar Mahalir Urimai Thogai scheme can submit their applications at the camps. A team of volunteers would be visiting every household to guide the people on how to apply for the welfare and other schemes implemented by the government and guide them in filing applications and uploading documents to be submitted to avail the benefits, he added. Making a special reference to the Sarasvati Mahal Library in Thanjavur, the Chief Minister said sufficient funds would be allotted in addition to the allocation of ₹75 lakhs per annum for the upkeep of manuscripts and other treasures at the library and creation of additional infrastructure facilities apart from ensuring distribution of pension to the retired staff. The library's heritage buildings would be renovated by the Public Works Department at a cost of ₹12.50 crore. Mr. Stalin announced that the kuruvai special package scheme would be implemented in the delta districts at an outlay of ₹82.77 crore. He inaugurated 2,461 projects implemented at a cost of ₹3,25.96 crore in Thanjavur district, laid foundations for 4,127 projects worth ₹309.48 crore and distributed assistance under various welfare schemes to the tune of ₹558.43 crore to 2,25,383 beneficiaries in Thanjavur district.

Warisan's action is damaging: Phoong
Published on: Saturday, June 14, 2025 Published on: Sat, Jun 14, 2025 By: Jonathan Nicholas Text Size: Phoong (left) criticised Chong's (right) approach, saying the matter should have been raised in the State Assembly or through official channels, not with the police. Kota Kinabalu: Sabah Industrial Development and Entrepreneurship Minister Datuk Phoong Jin Zhe condemned Elopura Assemblyman Calvin Chong's police report against the RM31 billion Esteel steel project in Sipitang, calling it 'bizarre' and damaging to investor confidence. Chong, from Parti Warisan, lodged the report on Friday after claiming there was no visible progress at the Sipitang Oil and Gas Industrial Park (SOGIP), following a visit with Sri Tanjong Assemblyman Justin Wong. Advertisement Phoong criticised Chong's approach, saying the matter should have been raised in the State Assembly or through official channels, not with the police. 'With that kind of attitude, it's no wonder why investors are hesitant to come to Sabah,' he said. He reaffirmed that the Esteel project is legitimate, vetted by federal agencies, and officially launched by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor on May 30. Phoong added the project secured a Federal Manufacturing Licence in January, signed a gas supply deal with Sabah Energy and Petronas in February, and awarded a jetty construction contract to China Communications Construction Company (CCCC) in May. Esteel, he said, paid RM35 million in deposit and signed a sublease agreement with Sabah Oil and Gas Development Corporation and construction is expected to begin by July or August. He said delays were attributed to a federal moratorium on new steel licences due to global oversupply but Esteel was the only project granted an exemption which reflected strong federal confidence. He warned that Chong's actions could scare away genuine investors. 'If you question the project, come to the State Assembly. Ask me directly, I am prepared to answer. But making a police report implies that the government or investor is lying. That is serious and completely uncalled for. 'No other state would treat an investor this way. Actions like this could set back Sabah's hard-won investment gains. We should not politicise investment matters. No industrial state in the country goes around lodging police reports against investors. 'Even in states like Kedah or Selangor, political battles stay in the legislature. Dragging a legitimate investor's name into a police investigation is not only unfair, but dangerous. It creates uncertainty,' Phoong said. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Andrew Cuomo snags endorsement of ex-NY Gov. David Paterson in NYC mayoral race: ‘Workable, sensible candidate'
Andrew Cuomo snagged the endorsement of fellow former Gov. David Paterson Wednesday — after also cinching the backing of ex-Mayor Mike Bloomberg. Paterson announced he was backing Cuomo — the frontrunner to win the Democratic nomination for mayor — during an event where he was joined by union members and Manhattan Democratic Party Leader Keith Wright. The 55th governor, who served between 2008–2010, praised Cuomo as the 'workable, sensible candidate.' 3 Cuomo snags endorsement from NY leaders at Amy Ruth's restaurant in Harlem. Matthew McDermott He seemingly took shots at Democratic socialist candidate Zohran Mamdani, who firmly holds second place in the polls behind Cuomo — and has been drawing criticism from moderate Dems over his ultra-progressive policies. 'Are we gonna engage in absurd extremes, making promises we can't keep, pledging hopes we can't fulfill?' Paterson said. Wright, a former state Assembly member, also endorsed Cuomo, calling out his plan to build more affordable housing. 3 Left to wright, David Paterson, Andrew Cuomo, and Kevin Wright, celebrate the frontrunners endorsement in Harlem. Matthew McDermott 3 Cuomo said he was honored to receive the endorsement from the fellow former governor of NY David Paterson. Matthew McDermott 'The one point that got me, when Andrew says he's going to build 500,000 units of affordable housing, I believe him!' he said. 'Right now, when I look at the field, I can't think of anyone more capable of doing it than the one who did it before,' said Paterson at Wednesday's gathering, held at Amy Ruth's soul food restaurant in Harlem. The announcement follows ex-gov.'s endorsement from former Mayor of New York Michael Bloomberg who expressed similar sentiments about Cuomo's experience and leadership. Following the event, the ex-governor posted a statement celebrating the endorsement from the two veteran Dems. 'I am honored to have the endorsement of Former Governor Paterson and former State Assembly Member Keith Wright, two men I have known and respected for many years,' Cuomo wrote on X.
