South County's run of dominance ends one win short of the state title
GLEN ALLEN, Va. — Despite undergoing a coaching change just weeks before the season and experiencing back-to-back years without a state tournament appearance, the South County girls' soccer team got out to a decent start before ripping off win after win behind a sturdy defense and an efficient offense. The Stallions rode that surge all the way to the Virginia Class 6 title game — and they proved they belonged there, too. But they couldn't respond after Deep Run jumped ahead early on Monique McEnhimer's fifth-minute strike after a scramble in the box.

UFL 2025: Every touchdown from conference championship round
Just one game remains in the 2025 UFL season, as the Michigan Panthers and DC Defenders won their respective conference championship games last week. Michigan beat the Birmingham Stallions on the road in the USFL Championship Game, and DC got a convincing victory on the road against the St. Louis Battlehawks in the XFL Championship Game on FOX. The 2025 UFL Championship Game will take place at 8 p.m. ET on Saturday at The Dome at America's Center, home of the Battlehawks. Let's take a look at every touchdown scored in the conference title round! Michigan Panthers 44, Birmingham Stallions 29 Michigan went three-and-out to open the game, but its offense fared much differently the rest of the way. After forcing Birmingham to punt on its first possession, Michigan put together a six-play touchdown drive that ended with Toa Taua rushing for a 3-yard score. Quarterback Bryce Perkins then finished off a 13-play drive with a 1-yard rushing score on the Panthers' next drive. The Stallions responded three plays later with quarterback J'Mar Smith hitting wide receiver Deon Cain for a 65-yard completion and tight end Jordan Thomas for an 18-yard touchdown on the next play. After forcing the Panthers to go three-and-out, Smith's pass was intercepted by safety Kai Nacua, who ran the pick back 25 yards for a Michigan touchdown. However, Birmingham finished the first half strong, as C.J. Marable's 1-yard rushing touchdown capped off a seven-play drive, and the Stallions trailed 21-14 at halftime. Birmingham opened the second half with a field goal, but Michigan reached the end zone eight plays later, as Taua rushed for a 6-yard touchdown. And two plays after forcing the Stallions to go three-and-out, the Panthers went up 35-17, as Perkins hit wide receiver Malik Turner for a 76-yard touchdown. With Matt Corral under center, the Stallions got back into the game, with the quarterback finding wide receiver Davion Davis for a 3-yard touchdown, and Corral hitting Thomas for a 4-yard touchdown three plays after a Panthers fumble. But Michigan got back on track on the ensuing drive, as Perkins, who finished the day with a 119.7 passer rating while completing 80.0% of his passes and rushing for 34 yards and one score, orchestrated a nine-play touchdown drive that ended with Taua rushing for his third touchdown. The Panthers then intercepted Corral and got a field goal off the turnover, with a Michigan fumble recovery later helping them run out the clock and get the win. DC Defenders 36, St. Louis Battlehawks 18 DC was in command from start to finish in this one. After both teams punted on their first possessions of the game, the Defenders broke the ice when Jordan Ta'amu connected with wide receiver Seth Williams for a 42-yard touchdown. Eleven plays after forcing another St. Louis punt, Deon Jackson rushed for a 2-yard touchdown, giving DC a 14-0 lead. Late in the first half, though, Ta'amu was intercepted by cornerback Myles Jones. A pair of DC penalties put the ball on the 2-yard line for St. Louis and Jacob Saylors got them on the board with a 2-yard rushing touchdown with 3:10 remaining in the second quarter. That said, the Defenders got a pair of field goals to end the first half, one of them coming directly after a Battlehawks fumble, and they led 20-6 at halftime. St. Louis turned the ball over on downs to start the second half, and DC made them pay. Seven plays after the Battlehawks couldn't move the chains, Abram Smith rushed for a 2-yard touchdown. St. Louis scored six plays later on a 12-yard touchdown pass from Brandon Silvers to wide receiver Hakeem Butler. However, DC kept the pedal to the metal with an eight-play touchdown drive that ended with a 5-yard scoring run from Jackson, his second rushing score of the game. The Defenders added a field goal on their next possession, which the Battlehawks followed with a 10-play scoring drive that ended with Max Duggan rushing for a 2-yard touchdown. Sports Seriously For the first time since the USFL returned to play in 2022, the Birmingham Stallions will not be playing for a spring football championship. The Michigan Panthers beat the Stallions in a 44-29 shootout at the 2025 USFL conference championship game. The win marked Michigan's first over Birmingham since the 2022 USFL season and was also the Stallions' first-ever playoff loss under Skip Holtz during four combined seasons in the USFL and UFL. "This was a complete team effort," Panthers coach Mike Nolan said on the ABC broadcast after the win. "The players played their hearts out." The Stallions struggled to stop Michigan's offense throughout Sunday's matchup. The Panthers racked up 371 total yards while getting dominant performances from quarterback Bryce Perkins and running back Toa Taua. Perkins made plenty of plays both through the air and on the ground. Notably, he hit Malik Turner in stride to create a 76-yard touchdown reception and also had an impressive, 29-yard scamper on a third-and-18 to keep alive a critical Panthers touchdown drive. Meanwhile, the Panthers leaned on Taua throughout the game. The tough, downhill runner posted 85 rushing yards and scored three times, including a key fourth-quarter touchdown run that extended Michigan's lead to 12 points after a run of 12 consecutive Birmingham points cut Michigan's lead to 5. While Holtz's Stallions did what they could to stay in the game, turnovers ultimately killed their offense's chances of competing. Starting quarterback J'Mar Smith was benched after throwing a pick-six to Kai Nacua that allowed Michigan to take a lead into halftime. Matt Corral performed better after replacing Smith. However, he had two key, fourth-quarter turnovers that ended Birmingham's chances of pulling off the 17-point comeback and brought to an end the Stallions' streak of three consecutive spring league titles. As for the Panthers, they snapped a seven-game losing streak against the Stallions and will now advance to the UFL championship game for the first time. Nolan is happy to celebrate the victory, but the veteran coach knows it will take another strong performance to beat the winner of the XFL conference championship between the St. Louis Battlehawks and DC Defenders. "We're gonna have to play the same team effort, team game to win and beat whoever it is we do play," Nolan said. All the NFL news on and off the field. Skip Holtz's squad will need to keep that perfect record intact to get back to the UFL championship game. The Stallions and Panthers are set to meet Sunday in the 2025 USFL conference championship game. It will mark the third meeting of the season between the squads, with Birmingham winning the previous two 21-12 and 26-22, respectively. Birmingham and Michigan were the UFL's highest-scoring offenses during the 2025 spring-league season. The Panthers averaged a league-best 24.5 points per game, while the Stallions upped their average to 24.4 points per game thanks to a 46-point outburst in their Week 10 win over the Memphis Showboats. Quarterback play has been a big part of each squad's success. The Panthers got an MVP-level performance from Bryce Perkins when he was healthy during the season. He missed the final three games of the season due to an ankle injury, which allowed Danny Etling to thrive in his stead. Meanwhile, the Stallions dealt with significant injury issues at quarterback, as Alex McGough and Matt Corral both endured long absences after early-season injuries. Eventually, J'Mar Smith came out of retirement to helm Holtz's squad. He thrived in three starts, completing 65% of his passes for 758 yards, six touchdowns and one interception. While this game has the makings of a potential shootout, it's worth noting Birmingham's defense limited Michigan to two of its three lowest scoring outputs of the season. Kyahva Tezino and Bradlee Anae played significant roles in those regular-season wins, so the Stallions will rely on the star linebacker and pass rusher to once again slow down Michigan's dynamic offense. Somerset's Rebhan, Stevens are the Dade 3A-1A Softball Pitcher, Player of the Year
Taylor Rebhan and Ava Stevens had waited for such a moment since they began playing for the Somerset Silver Palms softball team in middle school. After coming up short at state each of the past two seasons, they Stallions left no doubt this year on their way to their first ever state championship. 'Every year we got so close and finally actually did it,' said Rebhan, a junior shortstop and University of Louisville commit. Rebhan and Stevens were each key to the triumph as they have been to building one of the best programs in the state over the past few years. Rebhan with her excellent glove at shortstop and prolific hitting at the plate, and Stevens with dominant performances in the pitching circle. And so, Rebhan and Stevens are once again the Miami Herald's Miami-Dade County Softball Player and Pitcher of the Year for Classes 3A-1A. Rebhan is the 3A-1A Player of the Year after another stellar hitting season in which she hit .430 with five home runs, seven doubles, four triples and compiled 24 RBI. Stevens is the 3A-1A Pitcher of the Year after going 17-4 with 97 strikeouts in 144 innings pitched. She also hit .400 and scored 34 runs while driving in 15 more. Stevens made more of an emphasis on becoming the most dominant pitcher she could entering her sophomore season and accomplished the goal with clutch performances throughout the postseason. 'My approach to failing improved. I'm used to hitting good every year, but this year I didn't hit as well,' Stevens said. 'But my pitching was most important. I handled it better. Just adjusting to knowing I had to do my job pitching and my team will pick me up was important.' Stevens is likely to be offered by multiple Division-I schools once schools can after September 1. Rebhan has the tools to be one of the next great players to come from South Florida and showed it again this season. But things didn't start so well for the Stallions overall. Somerset Silver Palms lost three of its first five games before an eight-game winning streak put it back on course toward a state title. 'The beginning started rough. I don't think, in the beginning, we had the confidence we could make it this far,' Stevens said. 'We felt like we're not this bad and we have to show that these teams we were playing aren't on the same level we are.' With Stevens and Rebhan set to return next season along with several other players from a core which has been together for the past three years, Somerset's state title could only be the first in a sustained run of success. 'We've all been playing together since we were in sixth or seventh grade,' Rebhan said. 'We all know each other and how are mindsets work. So to finally win this together was great. We know we can beat any team together. We just have to come in with the mentality that we can lose to anyone, but we can beat anyone.'
