AAA Sees Record Number of Americans Traveling Domestically July 4th Week

The American Automobile Association is expecting a record number of Americans to travel within the U.S. during the Independence Day holiday period. AAA is projecting 72.2 million people to travel at least 50 miles from home between Saturday, June 28, and Sunday, July 6. That would represent 1.7 million more travelers from last year and 7 million more than in 2019. "With the holiday falling on a Friday, travelers have the option of making it a long weekend or taking the entire week to make memories with family and friends," AAA Travel Vice President Stacey Barber said. AAA is expecting record travel by both car and air. It said it projects 61.6 million people to travel by car, up 2.2% from last year, and 5.84 million travelers to fly, up 1.4%. It said 8% of all Independence Day travelers are expected to fly. Boosting car travel are gas prices that "are still the lowest they've been since 2021" even though the Iran-Israel conflict has increased the price of oil in recent days, AAA said. "Escalation and duration of the conflict are two factors to watch. Weather is also a wild card." Read the original article on Investopedia

(NewsNation) — A record number of people are set to travel on Memorial Day, with approaching storms impacting travelers. A slow-moving system moving across the central and southern United States will impact the expected record number of travelers on Memorial Day. Southwest flight lands safely after reportedly being struck by lightning There are set to be over 45 million travelers this year who will travel at least 50 miles from home, 3.1% higher than last year. The AAA forecast is for May 22 to May 26. Previously, the record number of travelers on Memorial Day was set in 2005, with 44 million people. According to AAA, 39.4 million people are set to travel to their destinations by car this Memorial Day weekend. This is up from 38.2 million people in 2024. Stacey Barber, Vice President of AAA Travel, said, 'Memorial Day weekend getaways don't have to be extravagant and costly. Weather Channel Sends Stern Warning on Memorial Day

A record number of Americans were projected to travel at least 50 miles away from their homes this Memorial Day Weekend. Between May 22 and May 26, AAA predicted 45.1 million people would be traveling, breaking the record of 44 million set back in 2005 and a 1.4 million person increase over 2024. 'Memorial Day weekend getaways don't have to be extravagant and costly,' Stacey Barber, Vice President of AAA Travel said in a statement. 'While some travelers embark on dream vacations and fly hundreds of miles across the country, many families just pack up the car and drive to the beach or take a road trip to visit friends. Long holiday weekends are ideal for travel because many people have an extra day off work and students are off from school.' Before families fire up the grill, they might want to watch out for the latest warning from the Weather Channel, which is currently forecasting heavy rain and thunderstorm in the South. "The sluggish-moving weather system is nudging a bit farther south and east today. That means rain and thunderstorms will plague much of the South and Plains. This could mean a washout in locations shaded darker green in the map below," the Weather Channel said. "The rainfall could also be heavy, resulting in localized flash flooding in portions of the South. Scattered severe storms could impact the Southern Plains and parts of the Southeast, especially across the state of Texas. Damaging winds and very large hail will be the main threats, but we can't rule out an isolated tornado." TSA Sends Strong REAL ID Warning in Historic Announcement

Earlier this month AAA warned of historic travel for Memorial Day Weekend. It predicted 45.1 million people would travel at least 50 miles from home over the Memorial Day holiday period from Thursday, May 22 to Monday, May 26, breaking the previous record of 44 million set back in 2024. Long holiday weekends are ideal for travel because many people have an extra day off work and students are off from school.' As it turns out, AAA wasn't wrong. The Transportation Security Administration announced it screened over three million travelers on Saturday, May 24 alone, making it the third-busiest day in history. "Travel is on the rise this #MemorialDayWeekend. Yesterday, we screened over 3m individuals which is the 3rd busiest day of all-time. As a reminder, arrive at your airport early, have your REAL ID ready, and don't forget to #PackSmart," the administration said in a social media post on May 24. Ahead of the busy travel weekend the TSA made a new statement for those considering travel with a firearm after a troubling number of travelers were caught transporting guns illegally. 'We expect heavy passenger volumes throughout the Memorial Day weekend and encourage all passengers to arrive in the terminal at least two hours prior to departure,' Jennifer Gordon, TSA's Federal Security Director at Raleigh-Durham International Airport said in a statement. 'Unfortunately, with the increase in passengers comes the possibility of more firearms being brought to the checkpoint. Firearm detections can slow down and sometimes even close a lane. Please be sure to travel properly with your firearm.'TSA Sends Strong REAL ID Warning in Historic Announcement first appeared on Men's Journal on May 25, 2025
