One dead after Otago farm crash, one in critical condition after car fire
(File photo) Photo: RNZ One person has died, after a crash on an Otago farm, and another has been critically injured, after a car fire in Otago. Police said one person died at the scene of a crash on a farm near Millers Flat in Central Otago, about 10:30pm Thursday. Three other people had minor to moderate injuries and were taken to hospital. Police are investigating what happened. Meanwhile, another person was flown to hospital in a critical condition, after the car fire at Karitane, north of Dunedin. Emergency services were called to the blaze on Coast Road, shortly after 6am Friday. A St John ambulance spokesperson said crews - including a helicopter - responded and one critically injured patient was flown to Dunedin Hospital. Fire and Emergency shift manager Lyn Crosson said the car was 'well alight' when firefighters from Waikouaiti arrived. "We didn't have to remove anyone from the car," Crosson said. Police said they were making enquiries and that the fire did not appear to be suspicious. Emergency services have also been kept busy in Tasman , where three people have been critically injured in two different car crashes, on Thursday. Amber heat-health alert issued for all regions in England as temperatures climb
An amber heat-health alert has been issued for all regions in England as the UK could record a new high for the warmest day of the year on Thursday. Eastern parts of Wales, the Midlands and the south-east of England could reach 30C, which would break the current record for 2025 of 29.4C set days ago in Santon Downham in Suffolk. UV and pollen levels are also expected to climb alongside temperatures. The amber alert issued by the UK Health Security Agency is in force from 12pm on Thursday until 9am on Monday. It warns 'significant impacts are likely' across health and social care services because of high temperatures, including a rise in deaths – particularly among those aged 65 and over or people with health conditions. An official heatwave is recorded when areas reach a certain temperature for three consecutive days, with thresholds varying from 25C to 28C in different parts of the UK. Met Office meteorologist Clare Nasir said: 'High UV levels and high levels of pollen as well. 'Winds remain fairly light and a warmer day all round across the east coast as temperatures arrive around 24C, but 28C for Liverpool, Leeds, 23C for Glasgow and Edinburgh, Belfast coming in around 24C, 28C likely across Bristol as well as Cardiff. 'But for east Wales, the Midlands, down towards the South East we could see temperatures peaking around 30C, so feeling hot here.' A number of charities have issued warnings about the potential risks of hotter weather. St John Ambulance urged the public to familiarise themselves with the signs of heat exhaustion and heat stroke and to learn how to respond. It comes after a survey of 1,002 adults in England revealed more than half do not know the difference between 'life-threatening' heat stroke, which requires a 999 call, and heat exhaustion, which can be treated by cooling and hydrating a patient. The British Heart Foundation is encouraging people with heart conditions to take precautions such as staying cool and keeping hydrated to minimise potential health risks during a heatwave, saying the heat can put extra strain on the heart. Age UK urged people to check in on older relatives, friends, and neighbours to see if they need anything and to make sure they are not feeling overwhelmed by the excessive heat. Dementia UK issued advice and tips on how to support a loved one with dementia in the heat, including keeping hydrated; staying cool with appropriate clothing; keeping the person out of the heat; cooling the person down by avoiding hot drinks, alcohol and caffeine; and keeping the home environment cool. RAC breakdown spokeswoman person Alice Simpson warned drivers should 'take every precaution' in the heat. 'When temperatures soar, vehicle breakdowns usually do the same,' she said. 'One of the biggest risks is an increase in cars overheating, especially when sat in queues of traffic with no shade.' Ms Simpson urged drivers to check their coolant levels and any air conditioning systems that are not working properly, and to take plenty of water and snacks on the road.

'I don't get the hot flushes that my auntie used to talk about,' she said, 'but I do get completely exhausted and don't sleep at night. The migraines are so terrible! 'I've got a supportive partner. The first thing I do is wake up, open my eyes and he puts a coffee in my hand. He's great, we do it together.' Myleene and her boyfriend Simon Motson have been together since 2015 and share her youngest son, five-year-old Apollo. Before splitting with ex-husband Graham Quinn in 2012, they had two daughters, Ava, 17 and Hero, 13.

Father of girl killed in South West crash charged over threats to alleged driver, police
A grieving father whose 15-year-old daughter died when the car she was a passenger in crashed in WA's South West has been arrested after allegedly threatening to kill the driver, as well as police. Last week Greg Bragger, 47, told this masthead his world had been shattered following the death of his only child, Caitlyn, in a crash near Logue Brook Dam about 150 kilometres south of Perth. On Tuesday, Bragger faced Perth Magistrates Court after spending the night in custody for allegedly making three separate threats to kill. The court was told Bragger made multiple threats to kill the 16-year-old alleged driver of the Toyota Landcruiser who is believed to have been Caitlyn's boyfriend. He also allegedly made threats to kill police if they got in the way of Bragger killing the boy, the court was told. Prosecutors told the court that Bragger held the 16-year-old responsible, however no charges have been laid over the crash that happened on June 7 on Scarp Road near the intersection with Hoffman Road. At the time, police said the car left the road and rolled several times. Five other teenagers were also in the car with Caitlyn. The driver and a 17-year-old male passenger were taken by St John Ambulance to Bunbury Regional Hospital with serious injuries. An 18-year-old male passenger and two 16-year-old female passengers were treated for minor injuries sustained in the crash.
