AI in business, data analytics, wetland conservation debut as UG courses
Kolkata: Colleges and universities have introduced innovative courses and unique combinations for students to enhance their skills across various fields. With industry demands evolving rapidly, several institutions are embracing future-ready programs in data analytics, artificial intelligence in business, enterprise resource planning (ERP) and business intelligence. In recent years, traditional core subjects like mathematics, chemistry, and physics saw declining enrolment numbers. However, new interdisciplinary combinations incorporating these fundamental sciences are gaining traction among undergraduate students, offering more practical and career-oriented pathways. St. Xavier's College introduced data analytics, artificial intelligence in business, enterprise resource planning (ERP), and business intelligence. Principal Swami Ekachittananda said, "This year we introduced life science for the first time, for which 10 seats have been allocated. " The college has around 180-190 seats for undergraduate courses, which will be increased to accommodate new courses. Ramakrishna Mission Vivekananda Centenary College, Rahara, is offering data science as a minor subject for students. Principal Swami Kamalasthananda said, "This is an age where students need to be well-equipped and have clear knowledge of numerous contemporary subjects. In these cases, I observed several students taking advantage of online courses because they have limited time to get an overall idea of the subject. " Asutosh College in Kolkata introduced 25 contemporary certificate courses that include wildlife conservation and ecotourism, data management for social sciences, AI for office work, electronic product design, and analysis of pollutants in the environment for both in-house students and others. Principal Manas Kabi highlighted that these certificate courses have been introduced for students who are eager to enhance their skills in various fields. Meet actor who became overnight star, faced casting couch, was thrown out of his house, Dev Anand wanted to touch his feet; His name is...
Some actors come and go, but there are a very few who leave a lasting impression with their first show as lead actor. In 2002, this actor got a big opportunity to work in Ekta Kapoor's romantic drama. He won hearts as the lead actor, where he played the role of Sujal Garewal. The show's name was Kahiin Toh Hoga, and the actor in question is Rajeev Khandelwal. Rajeev has been making headlines recently after his interview went viral. He always wanted to become an actor. But coming from a Marwari family where his father served in the Indian Army as Lt. Col. C.L. Khandelwal, his parents were against the idea of him making a career in acting. The actor, who earned a Bachelor's degree in Chemistry from St. Xavier's College, Ahmedabad, said in an interview with Zoom, 'I was thrown out of my house. I come from an army background. My parents said they didn't understand what this industry is all about. They knew that I had it in me to live my life decently but they wondered 'acting ka bhoot kaha se aagaya'. They knew that I spoke about acting since my childhood, but they never thought that I would want to make it my career.' In an old interview, he recalled a series of 'unreal' moments at a film party when he was introduced to two of the biggest superstars of Indian cinema – Rajesh Khanna and Dilip Kumar. After the release of his big-screen Rajeev Khandelwal said Dev Anand invited him to his house to offer the actor a film. 'When I went there, I touched his feet because I had idolised him since childhood. I had taken my camera and he was the only actor with whom I wanted to click a picture. When I touched his feet, he asked: 'What are you doing?' I said 'You inspire me', to which he said: 'Then, I should be touching your feet because actors like you inspire me too.' I was blown away,' he said.

St Xavier's College, Patna holds condolence meet for alumna Manisha Thapa, victim of Air India crash
Patna: Students and faculty of St. Xavier's College, Patna came together on Saturday to hold a heartfelt condolence meeting in memory of Manisha Thapa, a former student and Air India crew member, who tragically lost her life in the recent Air India plane crash. Manisha, who studied at the college from 2014 to 2017, was remembered as a bright and inspiring presence on campus. The news of her untimely death has left the Xavier's community in profound grief. 'Manisha was not just a student; she was a star among her peers,' recalled Kalpana Kumari, Head of the Business Economics Department. 'She was driven, kind-hearted, and full of promise. The Xavier family has lost a child, and her absence will always be felt.' Her former classmate Alvin said, 'We still can't process the news. She was someone who always stood out — in academics, activities, everything. Her energy and smile were contagious.' Manisha, a native of Patna with ancestral ties to Viratnagar, Nepal, had recently joined Air India after serving with IndiGo. She was on duty as a flight attendant aboard Air India flight AI-171, which crashed moments after taking off from Ahmedabad on Thursday afternoon. The ill-fated flight, carrying 230 passengers and 12 crew members, lost control shortly after take-off and crashed near City Civil Hospital and BJ Medical College, devastating a residential area and killing several on the ground. Manisha's family lives near Shyama Apartment on Jagdev Path in Patna. Her father, Raju Thapa, is with Bihar Police in Begusarai, while her mother Laxmi is a homemaker. Her younger brother, Amit, is still a student. Two of her uncles serve in the Bihar Special Armed Police. Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited the crash site on Friday and reviewed ongoing rescue efforts, expressing deep sorrow at the lives lost. In Patna, the air at St Xavier's remained heavy with grief — but also filled with tributes, prayers, and memories of a life that, though short, touched many.

Headless sculpture of Buddha, three rock cut caves found at Kadri in Mangaluru
A headless sculpture of the Buddha and a group of three rock cut caves of great importance were found during a recent archaeological exploration conducted at Kadri in Mangaluru, according to T. Murugeshi, retired associate professor in ancient history and archaeology, MSRS College, Shirva, Udupi district. 'The sculpture is stylistically datable to the 4th or 6th century A.D.' he said in a release. The sculpture was found in a water tank near the Kadri Manjunatha temple in a discarded state. The sculpture was lifted from the tank for study with the permission of the temple administrator, he said in a release. The sculpture was highly corroded. 'The head has been chopped off and the right hand is destroyed, but, still it has its serene beauty in its physical appearance. The Buddha is seated in the padmasana pose on the padma peeta in dhyana mudra by placing both palms above the centre of legs. The upper cloth passing over the left shoulder lays flat on the chest is very indistinctly visible,' he said. A pillar in the outer prakara of the temple has Dhyana Buddha sculptures seated on lotus. 'Thus, this sculpture under study is identified as Dhyana Buddha beyond doubt. The sculpture is about 68 cm in height and 48 cm in width including the prop of the image. The sculpture is stylistically datable to 4th - 6th century A.D. It is supposed to be the presiding deity of the temple,' he said. Mr. Murugeshi said a group of three rock cut caves found above the eastern side of Kadri tanks are of curious interest. 'They are cut in laterite above the ground. The first one from the right is about 8 feet in height and has a semi circular entrance like a porthole. It has a single square room with a small provision for a lamp. The entire structure looks like a megalithic dolmen. The middle and third ones have a high plinth and two square entrances with single square rooms. All caves have a sloppy canopy with holes to clear off rainy water. The nature of the caves clearly indicates that they were used for residential purpose,' the historian said in the release. The present discovery under study has a great importance in South Asian Buddhist studies and Tuluva history as well. The sculpture found at Kadri has close similarities with that of the Buddha image found at Mushira Waddo in Colvale of Goa, now displayed in Fr. Heras Institute at St. Xavier's College, Mumbai. The Dhyana Buddha image belongs to Mahayana Buddhism and caves also belong to the Mahayanists. 'By this discovery the decades of controversy over Kadri, whether it was a Buddhist centre or not is very clear. Kadri is a Buddhist centre over the centuries right up to 10th century A.D. as revealed by the inscription of Alupa king Kundavarma found on the Lokeshwara image of Kadri temple. The Mahayana Buddhist was replaced by Vajrayana Buddhist and they were turned out by Natha cult in 11th century,' he said. 'I am hereby requesting the commissioner of State Archaeology to take steps to recover this rare antiquity sculpture and protect it immediately,' he said. The historian said that he is thankful to Arun Kumar, the temple administrator for allowing to lift the sculpture for study. Shreyas Kolpe, a PhD student of Manipal University, Shreyas, an Assistant Professor in Ancient History and Archaeology, MSRS College; Shirva, Karthik, a postgraduate student in archaeology from the University College, Mangaluru, and Ravindra Kushwaha, a graduate student in archaeology, MSRS College helped in field work, the release said.
