Trainer Rex Lipp aiming to fulfil Cifrado owner's spring carnival dream
Lotto winner Cliff Little has long dreamt of having a runner in the Sydney or Melbourne spring carnival and so trainer Rex Lipp is going to grant him his wish. Cairns owner Little - who collected a monster $40m on lotto from a $26 ticket - owns $1.7m earner and multiple Group 2 winner Cifrado who races in Little's red and white racing colours which tip the hat to St George. Cifrado didn't trouble the scorers in the Queensland winter carnival but Group 1-winning Toowoomba trainer Lipp knows he has a good horse on his hands. It's time to do some travelling with the four-year-old gelding in the spring. 'Cifrado is spelling and will be in the paddock for another 10 days, but he will go to Sydney or Melbourne in the spring,' Lipp said. 'The bloke who owns him would love to have a starter in Sydney or Melbourne. 'He has spent millions on horses and he would really like to see Cifrado racing down south. 'I haven't picked anything out for him yet, I will talk to a few blokes and get an idea of what races would suit him early in the spring. 'We won't be going down there for the big races, we will pick our mark.' • Warnie can honour cricket legend with consolation victory Meanwhile, Lipp thinks he can fire a shot at Ipswich on Saturday with last December's Gold Edition Plate champion Superalloy. It was the only race that Superalloy has won in his 11-start career but Lipp said don't be surprised if Superalloy is in the money when racing in the $150,000 TL Cooney (1350m) at Ipswich on Saturday. Lipp thinks bookmakers are offering a silly price, with Superalloy rated a $13 chance in a betting market headed by Stay Focused ($3.20) who has drawn barrier 17. Superalloy drops in class after running a big race as a $151 shot in the Group 3 Fred Best Classic, being beaten 2½ lengths in a race where Lipp insists he should have finished closer to the winner Spicy Martini who then raced in the Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap. 'It's a big class drop for him on Saturday, he only got beaten two and a half lengths in the Fred Best and he got held up for a run,' Lipp said. 'I am sure he should have run a place in that race. 'The only time he let me down was in the Queensland Guineas, but it turns out he can't run 1600m. 'He is a horse you can race up on the pace and he has drawn well which is the thing you want to do at Ipswich. 'I do believe he will be right in the money. 'Bailey Wheeler rides him and he rides him well.'

Raceday return could bring Waipukurau a financial boost, next Hastings racing Spring Carnival is in 2026
But Wairoa Racing Club president Paul Toothill, who is fighting for the reinstatement of racing at the town's Te Kupenga racecourse, learned of the plans only through media and is yet to discuss it with his committee. The Wairoa Cup was to have been raced this year at South Wairarapa course Tauherenikau, but neither the club nor the town's businesses supported the venture because of the disconnect between their event and the fact it would be raced on a track 380km away. The biggest prize for Waipukurau is the 2200m Hawke's Bay Cup, with a history dating back to 1860, and which had stakes of $120,000 when raced at Trentham last month. It will be raced next at Waipukurau next April 26. Waipukurau's good fortune was announced by Waipukurau club president Kirsty Lawrence on Wednesday, ahead of an HBR meeting in Hastings at which horse owners, trainers and members were told racing should return to the Hastings track in time for the 2026 Spring Carnival. Well over $1 million is expected to be spent on cambering and other track correction work, which HBR and New Zealand Thoroughbred Racing say will sustain racing in Hawke's Bay well into the future. The benefits for Waipukurau have been highlighted by the manager and part-owner of the Leopard Hotel (aka Waipukurau Hotel). Taj Singh said past owners have told him its nine rooms and three-roomed family suite are likely to be booked out on at least one night for each of the race meetings. Opened in 1963 and thus a host of racing visitors for almost 60 years, it is otherwise only fully booked about once every two months, he said, and it relies on big events. Mayor Alex Walker was unavailable for comment by Thursday afternoon.

Bookies can't split Lady Shenandoah and Autumn Glow as spring markets are revealed
Who is the better three-year-old filly – Autumn Glow or Lady Shenandoah? It's a debate that has raged for months with opinions evenly divided after both of trainer Chris Waller 's star fillies completed perfect seasons. Even the bookies are having trouble separating them with TAB Fixed Odds price assessors rating Autumn Glow and Lady Shenandoah as equal favourites for some of the biggest races of the spring. TAB is today opening betting on many of the major spring carnival races and have Autumn Glow and Lady Shenandoah sharing favouritism at $6 for the Group 1 $1.5 million Epsom Handicap and $4.50 for the $10 million Golden Eagle. Another of Waller's outstanding fillies, the runaway ATC Australian Derby winner Aeliana, is on the second line of Epsom betting at $8 and fourth favourite for the Golden Eagle at $11. The release of the TAB markets is timely as both Autumn Glow and Lady Shenandoah returned to pre-training on Monday. Autumn Glow's owner John Messara said it was too early to lock in her spring program but confirmed the Epsom Handicap and Golden Eagle were likely targets. 'We have all our options open but at this stage the first Group 1 for Autumn Glow is likely to be the Epsom Handicap,'' Messara said. 'There is also the Golden Eagle to consider but it all depends on Autumn Glow and what Chris thinks is best for her. 'She has spelled really well, she's physically bigger and stronger now, and it's exciting to think what she could do in the spring.'' Godolphin filly Tempted is the $4.50 Flight Stakes favourite with Golden Slipper winner Marhoona at $6 while the past two King Charles III Stakes winners, Fangirl and Ceolwulf, are at $4.50 and $6 respectively for a repeat success.
