Marilyn Joyce Woods

Marilyn Joyce Bristow Woods, 90 years old, passed away on June 8, 2025, in Lake Charles, La. Marilyn and her twin sister were born on April 10, 1935, to Oliver 'Ollie' James and Mary Jones Bristow of Savannah, Ga., where Marilyn would grow up and graduate from Savannah High School. Not long after that, she met and married her husband of 54 years, the late Curtis Lee Woods Jr. After having three children, Curtis took a job at The American Press in Lake Charles, La. where they had their fourth child. Marilyn had a profound sense of style and grace, and she loved expressing that in her decorating and personal style. She even did some catalog modeling in her early years. Although Marilyn worked for a few years at Muller's Department Store, she was primarily a homemaker. Her focus was on raising her children and spending time with her family. Marilyn also loved the beach, dancing, swimming, boating and traveling and if all of those things could happen at once, that was her favorite, vacationing with her family and/or taking business trips to 'every major city' with her husband for conventions, where she took her children (when possible) so they could all share in new experiences. Marilyn continued to travel into her 80's, visiting her daughter and traveling with family, even taking a cross-country trip in her 70's. She loved to get out and see new place; the mountains, the snow, the different people, and cultures. She favored the beach, any beach, but Perdido Key, Fla. and Tybee Island, Ga. were her favorites. She was quiet and shy and mostly reserved, but to get her going was always entertaining. She lit up a room with her smile and laughter. Those who had just met her would often say she was the epitome of a 'southern belle' with her slow, well-mannered Savannah, Ga. accent. She wasn't just Southerner, she was a proud 'Savannahn.' She loved her dogs, spending time on the golf course with her husband 'practicing her swing,' and going on evening boat rides around the lake. She loved to swim and spent much of her time with family at the pool. She loved listening to music from the 30's 40's and 50's. Marilyn loved to go out dancing with her husband. They were truly something to behold on the dance floor. Like her favorite song by Nat King Cole, 'Unforgettable' is exactly what she was and how she will be remembered by those closest to her. An adored parent, a beloved twin sister and a devoted wife, Marilyn was exactly what she appeared to be, all of that, and then some. Elegant, kind, curious and excited to live life. She was generous, giving, loving and hilarious without even trying. Those left to cherish her memory are her eldest son, Curtis Lee 'Woody' Woods III (Deborah); her youngest daughter, Staci Marie Woods (Steve Abernathy); one granddaughter, Elyse Ellis Conner (Ricky) of Lake Charles, La., and extended family. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 54 years, Curtis Lee Woods Jr.; her twin sister and best friend, Marjorie Bristow Allen, of Savannah, Ga., and her two brothers, Oliver James 'Jimmy' Bristow Jr. and John Lawrence 'Johnny' Bristow, of Savannah, Ga., as well as two of her children, Gregory Allen Woods and Lynda Joyce Woods Ellis, both of Lake Charles, La. Marilyn's vibrant spirit and love for life will be deeply missed by her family and friends. She leaves behind a legacy of joy, laughter, and cherished memories. The family would like to acknowledge and express our sincere gratitude to Gwen, and all of the staff at Brookdale, and the staff of Amedisys Hospice for their compassionate care for our mother. Marilyn's funeral will be at 2 p.m. on Friday, June 13, 2025 in the Johnson Funeral Home of Lake Charles Chapel, 4321 Lake St., with the Rev. Marcus Wade presiding. Burial will follow in Prien Memorial Park Cemetery under the direction of Johnson Funeral Home. Visitation will be at the funeral home from 12 p.m. until the start of the service at 2 p.m. Memorial donations may be made to a charity of your choice. Words of comfort to the family may be expressed at

Opinion: Green budget aims for a stronger South

Warm cosy homes, local nutritious food, birdsong in the trees and the return of the Southerner: all part of Green Budget we announced last month. We developed this budget to give advance notice of our priorities once in government and to provide a point of contrast against this government's austerity. Essentially we put it forward so New Zealanders could see a clear choice: between the common good, where everyone has enough to live well v pure greed, where the extremely wealthy get to decide what scraps to dish out to everyone else. Like many here in Ōtepoti, we in the Greens have been frustrated and angry at the backsliding and broken promises around the new Dunedin Hospital. With so many redesigns and uncertainty, we've seen waste in terms of time and money and loss of capability and confidence. Our Green Budget is designed to deliver confidence with a publicly funded southern hospital — including the new inpatient building, a standalone, publicly provided pathology unit and an inter-professional learning centre. It will require public support and we are heartened by commitments made by other opposition parties. Our own commitment to Ōtepoti Dunedin is fully costed and set out clearly in black and white. This commitment to our hospital is echoed by my new Youth MP, James Watson. James hails from Wānaka and works in Wellington. According to him, the hospital is "a key piece of infrastructure that serves all of Otago and even most of Southland at times as the biggest hospital in the area". "It's disappointing to see the cuts made as we already know the health sector is underfunded," James said. It's especially unfortunate as much of my family lives in Dunedin and in Otago and to see the willingness to cut back funding on something that would greatly benefit such a huge area including the people I love shows that we aren't prioritising correctly." Of course, that's not all, and we would love to share more about what our budget has for you and your whānau. Our co-leader Chloe Swarbrick and the Green Budget Roadshow will be arriving in Ōtepoti Dunedin on July 25 for a public meeting to discuss how we can create an economy that belongs to us all, not just a few. We can fund a health system that works for everyone. We can ensure warm cosy homes for all and a restored Southerner passenger rail service to Christchurch. Building our shared future means investment in jobs, infrastructure and climate action. Chloe Swarbrick always loves visiting our place because of the southern spirit and as James Watson says, we need "a shift in opinions on the climate crisis and all the social issues that intertwine with it". I hope to see many of you on July 25.

Where the heck is Texas? Agencies say its part of these regions, but Texans don't buy it

Is Texas in the South? The Southwest? Or just... the West? One thing's for sure: it's nowhere near the Pacific Northwest, the Northeast or the Midwest. But really — where the heck is Texas, y'all? It's a longstanding debate, and for good reason. Texas defies easy regional labels thanks to its massive size, central location and the striking cultural differences across the state. It's clear that folks along the Texas–Louisiana border, from Texarkana to Beaumont, are far more Southern than those in Dallas. Fort Worth proudly embraces its cowboy heritage, calling itself "Where the West Begins" — a nod to its deep roots in cattle culture and its historic ties to the Chisholm Trail. Meanwhile, Austin is also becoming increasingly Western — but in a different way, where it's more coastal, tech-driven and cosmopolitan than the 'Wild West.' Communities in El Paso and the Trans-Pecos region align more closely with the cultural Southwest than with populations in the South, while Amarillo and Lubbock feel firmly rooted in the Great Plains. Houston and San Antonio? Who knows ... they sit somewhere in between. So, where is Texas officially? The debate continues. Even within the federal government, there are differing opinions on which region truly claims the Lone Star State. These classifications often vary depending on the purpose of the agency or service, whether it's for economic analysis, job distribution or administrative convenience. The U.S. Census Bureau: West South Central (with Arkansas, Louisiana and Oklahoma) Bureau of Labor Statistics: Southeast The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention: West South Central The Federal Emergency Management Administration: No set region but grouped with Arkansas, Louisiana, New Mexico and Oklahoma U.S. Forest Service: Southern U.S. Department of Agriculture: Both the Southwest (SNAP) and Plains Area (Agricultural Research) A Reddit post on the r/Texas subchannel explored this exact question, and there was almost a consensus. For most Texans, the answer couldn't be simpler: Texas is Texas. "One thing's for certain though, Texas is not in the Midwest," one user wrote, while another replied, "It's the wild wild West." Another shared that the drive from Beaumont to Jacksonville, Florida, is a shorter stretch than that from Beaumont to El Paso, so "Texas is literally wider than the entire 'South,'" while the same holds true for El Paso to San Diego, so "Texas is also wider than the entire 'Southwest'" as well. "It is its own region!" that user wrote. One shared that their dad from Tennessee says, "You're not a Southerner if you're from Texas, just a Texan," to which many agreed. Where is Texas?
