The Most Popular Pasta Shapes in Every State — And It's Not All Spaghetti
A new map of America's pasta preferences is stirring the pot—literally. Inspired Taste just dropped a state-by-state breakdown of the most searched pasta shapes across the U.S., and while spaghetti still holds the national title, the local picks get way more interesting. We're talking regional loyalties to rigatoni, cult followings for fettuccine, and one surprising state that gave rotini the majority of its vote. And sorry to elbows—no state gave the mac-and-cheese classic their top spot. Regardless it's fresh pasta or dried, here's what stood out. Idaho: Rotini Rules With 44% of Idahoans choosing rotini, the Gem State showed the strongest loyalty to any pasta shape nationwide. It makes sense: rotini's spiral shape is a red sauce magnet, ideal for hearty meat sauces or creamy ranch pasta salads—two staples in cold-weather comfort food culture. Both states crowned rigatoni as their favorite—a tube-shaped pasta known for its ridged exterior and sturdy structure. It's a natural pick for baked pasta dishes and rich Southern-style casseroles, offering plenty of bite and sauce-holding power. These states might not seem similar on the surface, but all three share a love for fettuccine. Long, flat, and famously paired with Alfredo sauce, fettuccine holds up well to cream- and seafood-based sauces, both of which are popular in coastal cuisines. The Great Elbow Snub Elbow macaroni—despite ranking #4 overall—wasn't the top pick in any single state. A surprise, considering its role in iconic dishes like mac and cheese and pasta salad. It's beloved, but not enough to be anyone's number one. Orzo and Angel Hair: Least Loved Nationwide At the bottom of the barrel? Orzo and angel hair, with 18% of respondents naming them their least favorite pasta types. Orzo's rice-like shape can be confusing to some eaters, and angel hair often gets knocked for turning mushy too fast. National Winner: Spaghetti Still Reigns Despite all the regional quirks, spaghetti held onto its crown as the country's favorite shape, topping the list in 20 states. Its classic status and versatility make it a crowd-pleaser—equally at home in a quick weeknight dinner or a long-simmered Sunday sauce. Pasta is more than just pantry stock—it's identity food. The shape you reach for reflects how you cook, what you crave, and what recipes feel like home. A box of penne might mean baked pasta passed down from grandma. Spaghetti might mean Tuesday night comfort or a go-to cheap dinner. And that state loyalty? It says a lot. New Jersey going hard for penne? Feels on brand. Idaho's love for rotini? Unexpected but kind of charming. These picks reveal little snapshots of how Americans really eat. How to See Your State's Pick Check out the full pasta shape map at Inspired Taste or search your state's breakdown online. Then look at your pantry—are you in the pasta majority or marching to your own noodle beat? Whether you're team spaghetti or flying the rigatoni flag, there's no wrong answer—just more excuses to boil some water.

Beloved UWS eatery Jacob's Pickles shuttered for roaches, rats, sewage
Upper West Side eatery Jacob's Pickles was abruptly shuttered this week following a slew of icky code violations. The Department of Health temporarily closed the Southern-style dining hotspot after the place showed evidence of rats and roaches. The restaurant was also cited for having an 'improper, inadequate, or unapproved' sewage disposal system. An inspection report revealed that the venue, located at 509 Amsterdam Ave. between 84th and 85th Streets, also allegedly failed to properly protect 'food, supplies, or equipment' from possible contamination sources. The shutdown took effect Wednesday with a statement from the restaurant claiming they'll be back open come Monday. 3 The Jacob's Pickles website said the restaurant was closed for renovations. Photo: Eilon Paz 'While unexpected, we're genuinely grateful this issue was brought to our attention,' the statement read. 'With the guidance of the health department, we uncovered underlying structural issues that contributed to unforeseen facility maintenance challenges. 'The safety of our guests and staff is always our top priority, and we will not reopen until every concern is resolved in full compliance with NYC Health Code standards,' the statement concluded. 3 Health inspectors shut the restaurant down Wednesday. JHVEPhoto – 3 Inspectors found evidence of rats living in the restaurant. Katsiaryna – The restaurant's website stated that Jacob's Pickles was closed for renovations and 'will open in a few days.' Jacob's Pickles has had a C rating with the Department of Health since December. Owner Jacob Hadjigeorgis said in May 2024 he would move the American restaurant to a new location at 688 Columbus Ave., between 93rd and 94th Streets, after which he planned to open a new bar, Velvet Cowboy, inside the space Jacob's Pickles had occupied. It's unclear if Hadjigeorgis' plans have changed.

Fine Dining Chef Josh Skenes Opens a Spicy Fried Chicken Restaurant in Arts District
One of the world's most acclaimed chefs is getting into the fried chicken business. Joshua Skenes, the founding chef of Saison and Angler in San Francisco (and part of Angler LA at opening), is opening a fast-casual restaurant on June 6 called Happies Hand Made in the Arts District in the space adjacent to Tatsu Ramen. Skenes, who opened Leopardo in mid-2024 and temporarily closed it in early 2025 to work on Happies, is serving thick, spicy, Sichuan-inflected fried chicken tenders with fruit and tea drinks; heavily seasoned beef tallow fries; soft serve topped with passionfruit and strawberry; and frozen cocktails. The tenders will be served atop crispy waffles, milk bread slices, or a pile of dressed salad greens. The surprise debut comes after months of speculation about the fate of Leopardo, Skenes' Italian American pizza and seafood restaurant that opened in 2024 along La Brea Avenue. Leopardo had garnered some local and national recognition for its pizza and was included in the California Michelin Guide. The restaurant quietly closed in early 2025 and has yet to set a reopening date, but promises a renovated interior design. Prior to Leopardo, Skenes founded Saison, which reached three Michelin stars (it's currently at two after his departure), and Angler, which still has a single Michelin star. Angler in Los Angeles operated at the Beverly Center from 2019 to 2023. His only previous foray into casual dining was with Fat Noodle, a venture with Umami Burger founder Adam Fleischman that never fully opened. In the meantime, Skenes' Happies Hand Made restaurant opens its doors today at noon with limited hours of operation from Friday to Sunday. The fried chicken tenders are possibly the biggest in the city, encrusted with a crispy Southern-style exterior and dressed with a mildly spicy Sichuan-style chile sauce. A gentle smokiness comes through with each bite, which distinguishes these tenders from other versions around town. Craggly fries are coated in black pepper and heavy seasoning, resembling Chinese and Korean snacks, and they're fried in beef tallow for good measure. Skenes has always excelled in soft serve ice cream, with compelling renditions at Angler and Leopardo. Here, soft serve swirls are topped with strawberry sauce, passionfruit, or whole honeycomb. Prices are fairly reasonable, with fried tender combos at $26 for two tenders, a choice of crispy 'liquid' waffle, milk bread, or salad, and a housemade soda. Fries are $5, and soft serve is $8. To round out the menu, Skenes has a huge array of beverages, like fruit sodas; lemon mint, honey oolong, and hojicha tea, cold brew coffee with a whole doughnut on top; boozy slushies flavored with coconut or kyoho grape; and a few other fruity cocktails. The wood-lined space conjures a retro diner, with a slatted divider barely separating the rest of the high-ceiling industrial space from the next-door Tatsu Ramen. Still, a few wall counter stools and plush booth seating make for decent on-premise dining. The restaurant is currently dine-in only, with take-out and delivery forthcoming. Happies Hand Made is open Friday to Sunday, 12 p.m. to 8 p.m. and is located at 427 S. Hewitt Street, Los Angeles, CA, 90013. Sign up for our newsletter.
