Man mourns death of brother killed in 1977 double homicide; case went unsolved

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) — Time can do some funny things, especially after a loved one is murdered. In 1977, Duane Thomas was 17, and he thought his brother, Amber Thomas, was a man. Amber was just two years older than Duane at 19, but, you know how little brothers are. 'Even to this day, I think of him as a grown man,' Duane said of his brother. Amber was murdered Dec. 7, 1977, at an arcade at 1107 Hillman St. His murder has never been solved. Now 64, Duane realizes his big brother was not really a man — he was only two years older, after all. Yet, it took the passage of time to realize they were probably a lot alike and going through the same things people go through at that age. 'My brother was a very charismatic young man,' said Duane on the phone from Cincinnati, where he is now a substance abuse counselor. He moved to the Queen City after losing his job in Youngstown, but before that, he had lived in the city his whole life, graduating from Hillman Junior High and South High School. He has four children of his own. 'He was very smooth with the ladies, a very well-dressed man,' Duane said of his brother. 'He liked the quick money. He was a really nice guy.' It was a fractured family; Amber was raised by an aunt in Cleveland, and even though he also attended South briefly, he graduated from East Tech High School in Cleveland. After a brief stint in the military didn't work out, Amber was back in Youngstown, living with Duane and their mother in a house on Overland Avenue. Duane also has another brother and a sister. He said he reached out to a reporter after he read a story on another cold case, that of Annie Griffin, whose remains were found in October 2002 on the Sharon Line on the East Side. The story stirred up memories for Duane because it mentioned the cafe Annie's mother ran, Willie Mae's Soul Kitchen, also on Hillman Street, and the scene of a shooting in 1990 that left a man dead. Neither the Soul Kitchen nor the Money Arcade, where Amber was killed, exists. They have been torn down long ago. Duane said his brother worked at the Money Arcade for the man who ran the place, who was killed in the shooting with him. In December 1977, the city was reeling from Black Monday and the loss of almost 5,000 steel jobs in September. There were efforts by steelworkers to buy back some of those mills and run them. The nation was in the midst of a coal strike, and food prices were rising. The city's population was well over 100,000. There were six public high schools and two Catholic high schools. Today, the city's population is just less than 60,000. Locally, the city was bracing for six inches of snow and bitter cold the night Amber's boss picked him up for work. Duane said he wanted to go with them, but his mother said no. Duane was only 17, but his brother was 19 and considered an adult, so he got to go, Duane said. 'I just wish he hadn't gone that night. I wish he had stayed home,' Duane said. 'My brother wanted me to come, too, but my mother wouldn't let me go.' 'The next thing I knew, someone was knocking on my door, waking my mom to come with them.' According to the Dec. 8, 1977, edition of the Vindicator, Amber and his boss were found shot to death about 11:30 p.m. the night before by two customers who walked through the front door. Both victims were shot in the head. The newspaper said police found six .25-shell casings on the floor. Amber's boss was well known to city police and had at least 30 prior arrests for gambling and running 'cheap joints,' the newspaper said. About $20,000 worth of stolen merchandise was also found inside — so much that it took police four pages of paper to inventory it all. Called out to investigate the case was Lt. Eugene Sabatino and Detective Clarence Greene. Sgt. Jerry Tekac, along with Patrolmen Tim Maloney and Phil Rogers, were the responding officers, with Tekac being the shift supervisor. Peter Novosel was called out to process the crime scene, but there is no mention of whether he was called out or was already on duty. At the time, the Crime Lab was staffed in the evening hours. The coroner's investigator who responded and declared both men dead was William Melage. The people who discovered the bodies told police they walked inside and called out for the owner, but no one answered. One of them went to the restroom, and when he came back, he discovered both bodies. He then called the operator, who informed police, which is how things worked in the days before 911. The newspaper said a source theorized that someone had a problem with Amber's boss and that Amber just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time, and the shooter — or shooters — did not want to leave a witness. In a report by Greene, he wrote that the cash register was open and change had been scattered on the floor. Greene also wrote that Duane's boss was known to have a roll of money and a handgun on him at all times. Neither was with him when his body was found. It also appeared that no one had forced their way inside. Police also took two tips in the week preceding the murders, according to reports, but how or if they were followed up on is not known. Also, about a week later, Patrolman Donald Ruse was called to an abandoned 2007 Hillman St. apartment building, where a crew from East Ohio Gas was taking out a meter when they found a wallet and other items that were on the floor. Inside the wallet was a driver's license. Also found was an AAA card, papers, and two pocket phone books. A report said the items were linked to the murder of Amber's boss. Duane said his mother was never the same after Amber died. She died about eight years ago, Duane said. 'My mother never recovered,' Duane said. 'She very rarely left the house. She died with a lot of guilt.' Duane also had a hard time dealing with Amber's death, turning to alcohol to dull the pain. 'I did a lot of drinking,' he said. 'That's how I dealt with my grief.' No matter how long ago it was, Duane has never forgotten his brother. 'My brother meant something to me,' Duane said. 'He's been gone a long time, but I still think of my brother. I have his picture on my desk.' This story is part of a series of cold cases that WKBN is examining. Do you have a cold case that you'd like us to look into further? Anyone with information on the Dec. 7, 1977, deaths of Amber Thomas and Shed Bell, Jr., can call the city police department Detective Bureau at 330-742-8911 or 330-746-CLUE. Cinema Without Borders: Childhood in times of conflict—Amrum

Be it Short Sharp Shock, The Edge of Heaven, Soul Kitchen or In the Fade, Fatih Akin, the prolific German filmmaker of Turkish descent, is best known for films that explore immigrant lives. With his latest, Amrum, he ventures into the new zone of period drama. A moving documentation of what it is like growing up in a beautiful place—Amrum Island in Germany—but at a treacherous point in history—towards the end of World War II, it nonetheless engages with the contemporary issues of identity and belonging and rings an obviously discernible political bell. What is of the times comes with a timelessness attached. Political indoctrination of the young, after all, is as much a thing of the past as it is of the present and the future. The story is told from one such child's perspective. The protagonist, 12-year-old Nanning (Jasper Billerbeck), is a man in the body of a boy, whose life is not about fun and games but arduous jobs—working on the farm, fishing, hunting for rabbits and being the bait in the dangerous chase for killing a seal—all to help his mother Hille (Laura Tonke) bring food to the table for the family. Will the end of the war, the death of Hitler and a return to peace change things for them? Or will normalcy still remain a distant dream? What is normal anyhow what with the pregnant Hille mourning the fall of Hitler and Nanning, brought up in the midst of Nazis, unable to let go of the 'Hail Hitler' salutation even while encountering an increase in animosity for those with his political inclination. The unlikely clincher in this momentous time is the family secret that Nanning unwittingly unearths, which further ruptures his already broken reality. The film, which is co-written by Akin with Hark Bohm, is based on Bohm's own childhood memories of Amrum. It had its world premiere at the official Cannes Premiere section of the Cannes Film Festival marking Akin's fifth selection at the event. Akin changes course stylistically. Unlike his signature lush and vigorous narratives, things get quieter and centred, simple and subdued. The lilting quality of the frames and the rhythmic flow of story-telling is offset by the weightiness and intensity at the heart of the tale.

Restaurant Review: Savour South American, Levantine flavours at Soul Kitchen

Dubai's restaurant scene is packed with high-end spots‭, ‬but too often‭, ‬they feel soulless and repetitive‭. ‬What's truly rare is a place with a beating heart‭, ‬a story‭, ‬and a genuinely cool energy‭. ‬Soul Kitchen nails this in a way that sets it far apart from anywhere else‭.‬ The concept is a fusion I've never seen before‭ ‬—‭ ‬South American and Levantine‭. ‬On paper‭, ‬it might seem like an unlikely match‭, ‬but in reality‭, ‬it's the most seamless marriage‭, ‬resulting in bold‭, ‬unforgettable flavours‭. ‬We started with their homemade sesame baguette‭, ‬served‭ ‬with dukkah and Lebanese olive oil‭, ‬quickly followed by chimichurri hummus and chicken shawarma empanadas topped with mango salsa‭. ‬Then came the true showstopper‭: ‬the wagyu kafta arepa‭. ‬The kafta patty was insanely juicy and rich‭, ‬balanced perfectly by vinegary pickled red cabbage and a light‭, ‬fluffy arepa casing‭.‬ The mains were just as striking‭, ‬each unlike anything I'd tried before‭. ‬The standout dish of the night had to be the tamarind lamb chops‭, ‬served with delicate‭, ‬1,000-layer yucca potatoes and a strained labneh dressing‭. ‬Every bite had it all‭ ‬—‭ ‬the sweet tang of the perfectly cooked chops‭, ‬the crisp saltiness of the yucca‭, ‬and the creamy richness of the labneh‭. ‬We also‭ ‬tried the beef short rib birria with chocolate and cauliflower purée‭, ‬which was enjoyable but didn't pack quite the same punch as the other dishes‭. ‬Another favourite was the Caribbean red snapper‭, ‬paired with an incredibly unique tomato and coconut sofrito‭, ‬bringing a fresh contrast to the heavier dishes‭.‬ Beyond the food‭, ‬the restaurant itself is effortlessly cool‭. ‬The soft pink interiors‭, ‬moody dim lighting‭, ‬and a layout designed‭ ‬around the stage at the back all align with the energy of the menu‭. ‬Elevating the entire experience‭, ‬the live band took the stage‭. ‬The lead singer‭ ‬—‭ ‬reminiscent of Frank Ocean‭ ‬—‭ ‬delivered jazzy soul and R&B‭, ‬blending seamlessly into the atmosphere‭.‬

The modern brasserie offers a cool, but relaxed atmosphere and the terrace is one of the most romantic we've seen in town. Open daily noon-11.30pm. Firstly, the space is beautiful with its crisp white tablecloths and eclectic artwork. Secondly, and most importantly, its fine French fare is widely known as being some of the best in the city. Regular live music creates a fun atmosphere, too. All this means is that a date night here will typically have a high success rate. Check out our full La Petite Maison Dubai review here Mimi Kakushi Credit: Mimi Kakushi Nestled within the sleek compounds of the Four Seasons Dubai, Mimi Kakushi is all moody interiors, cosy leather booths and expertly crafted Asian sharing plates. One of our favourite spots in Dubai for a romantic meal. Expect a low-lit, atmospheric space layered with rich textures, hand-painted walls and beaded curtains – it's informed by Japan's jazz age and the grandiose parties of silent film actor Sessue Hayakawa, serving up modern twists on Japanese classics. Be sure to order at least three dishes from the sushi counter and share with your special someone. Mon-Fri 6pm-2am, Sat-Sun noon-4pm and 6pm-2am. Four Seasons Resort Dubai by Jumeirah, Jumeirah Beach Road, (04 379 4811). That's where Thiptara comes in. Boasting pride of place by the waterfront of Dubai Fountain, its tuned-in service and prime views of the iconic water show and Burj Khalifa are only matched by its fine Thai cuisine, which has an emphasis on Bangkok-style seafood. Dishes may be classic but they're also highly indulgent, so be sure to advise your other half to arrive hungry and/or wear loose-fitting trousers. Who said romance was dead? Open daily 12.30pm-3.30pm, 6pm-11.30pm. Palace Downtown Dubai, Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Boulevard, (04 428 7961).
