Sunjay Kapur's death: How rich was he & who will inherit his wealth?
Sunjay Kapur death: The unexpected death of Sunjay Kapur has left a deep void in the Indian business world. Known for leading one of the most powerful auto parts companies, Sunjay was also famous for his high-profile personal life, especially his marriage and divorce from Bollywood actress Karisma Kapoor. After news of Sunjay Kapur's death, many are curious about his enormous net worth, business empire, and who will inherit his wealth. Sunjay Kapur's Rs 31,000 Crore Business Empire Sunjay Kapur was the chairman of Sona BLW Precision Forgings Ltd. (Sona Comstar), a leading manufacturer of automotive components. After his father passed away in 2015, Sunjay took over and successfully expanded the company's reach to global markets. Under his leadership, Sona Comstar became one of the top players in the global auto component industry. According to Bloomberg, Sona Comstar's market value was around Rs 31,000 crore (approx. $4 billion) at the time of his passing. However, the stock market reacted sharply to the news of his death, causing the company's shares to fall by 7% on Friday morning. To address concerns, the company issued a statement saying, 'His vision and dedication built a strong foundation. We remain committed to carrying forward his legacy and assure all stakeholders that our operations will continue as normal.' Who Will Now Lead Sona Comstar? Sunjay Kapur leaves behind three children: Samaira (20) and Kiaan (14) from his marriage with Karisma Kapoor, and Azarias (6) with his third wife, Priya Sachdev. None of the children are currently involved in the company, so leadership changes are not expected within the family right away. As per Sunjay Kapur's sisters might play a more active role in managing the company, while the existing board will continue to oversee daily operations. What Was Sunjay Kapur's Net Worth? At the time of his death, Sunjay Kapur had a personal net worth of $1.2 billion, which is approximately Rs 10,300 crore, according to Forbes. In recent years, his fortune had even touched $1.6 billion (Rs 13,000 crore), placing him among the richest businessmen in India's auto sector. His wealth included real estate, investments, company shares, and other high-value assets. Who Will Inherit Sunjay Kapur's Wealth? The big question on everyone's mind after Sunjay Kapur's death is — who will inherit his wealth? As per a report by Hindustan Times, his wife Priya Sachdev is likely to manage his estate. However, Sunjay had reportedly made sure that all three of his children were financially protected. He had already gifted Rs 14 crore worth of bonds to his children from Karisma Kapoor. On top of that, both Samaira and Kiaan are believed to receive a monthly income of Rs 10 lakh each. The exact legal details of his will or inheritance plan have not been made public yet. Sunjay Kapur's Personal Life: A Quick Look Sunjay Kapur's personal life was often in the spotlight. He first married fashion designer Nandita Mahtani in 1996, but the two divorced in 2000. In 2003, he married Bollywood actress Karisma Kapoor, with whom he had two children. After a bitter divorce in 2016, Sunjay went on to marry Priya Sachdev in 2017, and the couple had a son together. Complications Around Sunjay Kapur's Funeral Reports suggest that Sunjay Kapur's funeral will be held in New Delhi, but the arrangements are currently delayed due to legal issues. Since Sunjay was a US citizen and died in London, paperwork is required before his body can be flown back to India. A source told NDTV, 'Due to his American citizenship, there may be delays in repatriating the body to India.' The death of Sunjay Kapur has not only affected the auto industry but also raised several questions about his wealth, legacy, and who will inherit his fortune. As the legal formalities proceed, the business world and his loved ones continue to honour his remarkable journey and achievements. Sona BLW Precision Forgings shares fall almost 8% after Chairman Sunjay Kapur's passing
Shares of Sona BLW Precision Forgings Ltd (Sona Comstar) plunged nearly 8 percent in intra-day trade on Friday after the company announced the demise of its Chairman and Non-Executive Director, Sunjay Kapur. The stock touched a low of ₹500.45 during the session, reacting to the sudden development that cast a temporary shadow on investor sentiment. In a filing to the stock exchanges, the company confirmed that Kapur passed away in England, United Kingdom. 'Sunjay was a visionary leader and a compassionate person whose guidance shaped Sona Comstar's success. His values and dedication to excellence have left a lasting legacy,' the company said. It also assured stakeholders that operations, growth prospects, and leadership continuity remain intact. The immediate drop in share price highlights market sensitivity to leadership transitions, especially in innovation-led companies like Sona Comstar that are closely aligned with the evolving electric vehicle (EV) sector. Although the company affirmed that its operations and long-term outlook remain unchanged, investor caution prevailed in the short term. Sona Comstar further emphasized its commitment to advancing Kapur's legacy and vision. 'We are committed to upholding his legacy by advancing our mission and the values he instilled in Sona Comstar,' the company stated in its regulatory disclosure. Sunjay Kapur was a key figure not only at Sona Comstar but also across multiple boards. He held directorship positions in firms such as Jindal Steel & Power Limited, Osborne Agri Company Private Limited (UK), and Aureus Investment Private Limited, among others. His influence extended beyond corporate circles; he was also previously married to Bollywood actress Karisma Kapoor. Brokerage view Adding to the pressure on the stock, foreign brokerage Bernstein downgraded Sona Comstar to 'Market Perform' and assigned a price target of ₹540. The brokerage cited several near-term global risks that could affect the company's performance. These include escalating tensions between former US President Donald Trump and Tesla CEO Elon Musk, legislative efforts in the US to roll back EV subsidies, and India-US trade headwinds. Bernstein highlighted that over 75 percent of Sona Comstar's order book is linked to the EV segment, leaving the firm highly exposed to policy and geopolitical changes. With growing competition from Chinese OEMs and uncertainty in the US EV landscape, the brokerage warned that earnings could be under pressure. It also noted that the recent rally in the stock may limit further upside in the near term. After gaining 13 percent in May and 4 percent in April, the stock has declined around 8 percent in June so far. Stock Performance On Friday, the auto ancillary stock hit a low of ₹500.45, down 7.7 percent. It now trades nearly 35 percent below its 52-week high of ₹767.80, recorded in September 2024. Its 52-week low stands at ₹379.80, hit in April 2025. The scrip has fallen 23 percent over the past 12 months. Before the short-lived recovery in April and May, the stock remained in the red for six straight months between October 2024 and March 2025.
