Kenyans jailed for 30 years over 2019 hotel attack

A Kenyan court on Thursday sentenced two men to 30 years in prison on terrorism charges for their role in a deadly attack on a luxury hotel in the capital in 2019. The attack on the DusitD2 hotel and office complex in central Nairobi left 21 people dead, with police rescuing some 700 civilians as events unfolded over the 20-hour siege. Five gunmen with the Al-Qaeda-linked Somali militant group Al-Shabaab stormed the complex on the afternoon of January 15, 2019 with one detonating a suicide bomb outside and four others shot dead by police. A court last month found two Kenyan citizens, Hussein Mohamed Abdille Ali, 22, and Mohamed Abdi Ali, 61, guilty of conspiracy to commit and facilitating terrorism for their role in preparing the attack. Sentencing them at a Nairobi courthouse on Thursday, judge Diana Kavedza said: "The convicts may not have physically wielded the weapons that caused harm to the victims, but their facilitation directly enabled attackers who were heavily armed with guns, grenades, and suicide vests." "This was not a crime with isolated harm, 21 lives were lost," she added, acknowledging statements from survivors about their ongoing psychological struggles. "The emotional scars of the attack runs deep," she said. Al-Shabaab has carried out multiple attacks in Kenya in part because of its decision to send troops into Somalia in 2011 to fight the group. An assault on the high-end Westgate mall in Nairobi in 2013 left 67 dead in a siege that stretched out over four days.

UN urges more support for sexual violence survivors, victims in Somalia

MOGADISHU, June 19 (Xinhua) -- The United Nations (UN) marked the International Day for the Elimination of Sexual Violence in Conflict in Somalia on Thursday with a call for greater support for survivors and victims of sexual violence. "Somali communities deserve praise for supporting survivors and victims of these heinous crimes," UN Secretary-General's Special Representative for Somalia James Swan said in a statement issued in Mogadishu, the capital of Somalia. "For Somalia to build a society free of stigma and the trauma of sexual violence, we all must work to prevent and respond to sexual violence," he added, calling on Somali authorities to continue and enhance efforts in combating stigma and providing meaningful support to survivors, their families, and communities. In line with this year's theme of "Intergenerational Effects of Conflict-Related Sexual Violence," the UN in Somalia said it is working with stakeholders to highlight how sexual violence inflicts long-term harm, not only on individuals but also on the broader social fabric, often leaving families and communities grappling with its devastating effects for generations. The International Day for the Elimination of Sexual Violence in Conflict is observed annually on June 19. It serves as a reminder of the international community's shared responsibility to prevent and end conflict-related sexual violence and to uphold the dignity and human rights of all. The date also marks the UN Security Council's adoption of a resolution recognizing sexual violence as a weapon of war and a threat to international peace and security.

Somalia launches first national stock exchange

MOGADISHU, June 19 (Xinhua) -- The National Securities Exchange of Somalia (NSES) was officially launched on Thursday to spur the country's long-term economic growth and its integration into regional and global financial markets. NSES will initially operate as a private and self-regulatory organization model, working closely with relevant public institutions to oversee and ensure market integrity and transparency, the bourse said in a statement issued in Mogadishu, the capital of Somalia. Trading on the exchange is projected to begin early next year, targeting key sectors including telecoms, banking, real estate, and energy to drive national economic growth. Yasin M. Ibar has been appointed as the first chief executive officer of NSES and will also serve as the exchange's primary spokesperson. He said the launch is an important milestone, not just for Somalia's financial sector but for the entire economy. "NSES will create opportunities for companies to access capital, for investors to support Somalia's growth, and for our economy to integrate effectively into regional and global markets," he added. Ali Yassin Sheikh, deputy governor of the Central Bank of Somalia, said a properly regulated and inclusive securities exchange can be transformative for Somalia. The Central Bank stands ready to provide technical support and policy coordination to ensure a stable, credible financial market architecture that benefits all Somalis, Yassin said. It will provide a platform for issuing government-backed, Sharia-compliant Sukuk (bonds) to finance priority infrastructure and development projects across the nation, according to the statement. As part of its preparation, the NSES team will conduct investor education campaigns and international roadshows targeting Somali diaspora communities in Turkey, Kenya, Britain, Norway and the United States. As a member of the East African Stock Exchanges Association, NSES is expected to benefit from cross-listings with regional exchanges in Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania and Uganda, enhancing Somalia's integration into the broader East African financial market.
