LABUAN: Earning good in Labuan but spending generously in Kota Kinabalu and other major towns seems to be the norm among many high-come employees here, causing retail stores to be unable to reap the benefits. Labuan's average per capita registered in 2023 stood at Rm 83,596 and those with deep pockets were Oil and Gas industry workers or in the International Business Financial Centre (IBFC), plus a sizeable number in the civil service. Advertisement Former Deputy Finance Minister Steven Sim said in 2023 that IBFC had 9,189 people with 20 per cent locals. According to the former Sabah Chief Minister Tan Sri Harris Salleh there are 10,000 federal civil servants on the island serving 66 departments. Call to reflect MA63 equal status: Petronas, Mara scholarships
Published on: Monday, June 09, 2025 Published on: Mon, Jun 09, 2025 By: Sohan Das Text Size: Elias said in the case of Mara, a recent viral video indicated bumiputra students offered to study abroad for courses costing up to RM1 million or more reportedly comprising mainly peninsula students, although Sabah, Sarawak and Labuan natives are also bumiputras. LABUAN: There is concern that the cutback on expenditure by Petronas which will see up to 5,000 or 10 per cent of its workforce being laid off may also impact its commitment towards education, particularly the awarding of scholarships. Bumiputra rights activist George Elias said even before this new development, Petronas had never been transparent to the people of Labuan, Sarawak and Sabah on whether the Borneo territories were getting their fair share of scholarships. Advertisement 'There was no breakdown on how much went towards scholarships. 'We do not know whether the scholarships even reflected the one-third equal composition under amendments to the Federal Constitution in 2022 that restored the status of Sabah and Sarawak to that of equal partnership in the federation as per the Malaysia Agreement (MA63). Chance for peninsula-based coalitions to prove
Published on: Thursday, June 05, 2025 Published on: Thu, Jun 05, 2025 By: Sohan Das Text Size: Jalil said voters wanted to know if no hoppers like PAS and MIC would be rewarded with GLC posts or Nominated Assembly seats just for being fringe parties of federal coalitions. LABUAN: Peninsula-based coalitions should seize the golden opportunity to contest the imminent state election solo and test their strength and acceptance in the State. 'There should be no fear losing or even losing their deposits if they are confident of support as they often claim. 'Based on reports there is likely to be no clear majority winner and such being the case the coalition or party that wins even a handful of seats have the chance to be a partner in the new state government... so why worry?' said activist Haji Abdul Jalil Ghani. He was responding to reports that Pakatan Harapan and Barisan Nasional have reached an agreement without Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) even though the Sabah unity government comprises all three.
