Smiley unleashes new album, ‘DON'T BOX ME IN,' with Drake-assisted '2 Mazza'

Key Takeaways: Trending A deep dive into Will Smith's 'Just the Two of Us' and its lasting legacy 14 songs to add to your Father's Day playlist Will Smith unveils 'Pretty Girls' visual and preps for solo tour debut Smiley and Drake's latest track '2 Mazza' highlights their continued chemistry and shared Toronto roots. The track's lyrics reflect humble beginnings and Toronto street life, with production by Boi-1da, Fierce, and Harley Arsenault. Smiley continues to evolve his sound on his new project, DON'T BOX ME IN, with features from Baka Not Nice, Why G, and Icewear Vezzo. Smiley returns with '2 Mazza,' a new collaboration with Drake that anchors his latest project, DON'T BOX ME IN. Dropped on Friday (June 13), the track arrives with an official video and production from Boi-1da, Fierce, and Harley Arsenault. The OVO head honcho takes the lead on the record that sees the artists reflect on humbler days. Drake raps, 'I remember pushin' DT with the tandem, whipping two Mazdas (Double M)/ Grocery shoppin' at Royal York Plaza/ Me and Lil' Sandra was broke on the Gaza/ First-floor room at the airport, Ramada, I'm tryna make the most out of nada/ Now shorty see me and say, 'Oh my God, it's Mr. 2 Mazza.' Smiley matches his storytelling energy, delivering lyrics like, 'I'm still wearin' Prada, n**ga (Prada)/ I still eat McDonald's with you (Yeah)/ I'm still drinkin' bottles with you (Yes), I still leave the glizzies at ya house/ Used to trap with bugs in the couch, used to hide some of my drugs for drought.' Smiley first caught Drake's attention back in 2014. He told HipHopDX, 'He heard those songs and I guess he paid close attention. And then when I took a break and I came back, I dropped this one song called 'Hit' with my other guys on the song. That was the first time I'd ever seen that Drake knew who I was or anything.' His lyrical grind has been non-stop since it was announced that he signed with OVO Sound in 2021. That same year, he teamed up with the Grammy Award winner for 'Over The Top.' With DON'T BOX ME IN, though, Smiley is expanding his artistic realm after feeling his artistry wasn't being taken seriously. 'I'm the type of artist that people don't get right away,' he told iHeart in December 2024. He also teased that DON'T BOX ME IN represented him unlocking a new chapter, but he's already planning for the next one: 'This plan to just drop so much music.' The nine-track project features appearances from Baka Not Nice, Why G, and Icewear Vezzo. And with '2 Mazza' gaining traction with a solid visual, Smiley proves he's not just riding a co-sign, he's creating his own rap movement. Drake and Smiley Team up on New Track "2 Mazza"

Summary The highly anticipated collaboration between OVO Sound'sSmileyand label headDrake, titled '2 Mazza,' arrived earlier today. Both Toronto rappers come together for the joint effort, marking the first since their successful 2021 hit 'Over the Top.' '2 Mazza' immediately distinguishes itself by leaning into authentic Toronto street lexicon. The phrase 'mazza' itself, used to describe a 'crazy situation' or a chaotic scenario, becomes a central theme, woven into the fabric of the song's narrative. Smiley leads the charge with vivid, street-level storytelling, reflecting on his come-up and navigating the complexities of his environment. His signature, somewhat laconic yet impactful delivery, often described as a 'one-of-a-kind flow' with a distinctive 'cartoonish Snaggletooth wheeze,' provides a raw and unfiltered perspective over a hypnotic, R&B-infused beat. The song is part of Smiley's first album in three years, titledDon't Box Me In. Drake's verse on '2 Mazza' serves as a complementary counterpoint, mirroring Smiley's ascent while also showcasing his own journey from humble beginnings to present-day opulence. His presence on the track not only lends significant star power but also reinforces his long-standing commitment to nurturing talent within his OVO Sound imprint and putting Toronto's unique voice on the global stage. '2 Mazza' is more than just a song; it's a cultural moment, a sonic snapshot that brings local Toronto slang to a global audience, all under the influential co-sign of one of music's biggest names. Smiley: Providence in ‘very preliminary' talks with Matunuck Oyster Bar

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — If there's a way for Providence to help a beloved Rhode Island oyster bar, Mayor Brett Smiley said the city stands ready to do so. In the wake of a devastating fire at Matunuck Oyster Bar in South Kingstown last month, several fundraisers have been launched and community members have been offering help to the iconic restaurant. RELATED: Rhode Islanders distraught by fire at beloved oyster bar Smiley said the city has had 'some original conversations' with the bar's owner, but they were 'very preliminary.' 'I reached out immediately to the business owner, who I know, and told them if there was a way that Providence could play a role in either a short-term or a long-term solution to the tragedy, that we wanted to do so,' Smiley told 12 News on Monday. 'Most importantly, there's 300 people who work at the oyster bar who don't have jobs right now, and we want to make sure that they find work and that that treasured Rhode Island institution finds a home and can reopen as soon as possible.' Earlier on Monday, The Boston Globe reported that the city's discussions included proposing that the bar open temporarily in Waterplace Park, where Skyline at Waterplace used to be. Skyline at Waterplace had been embroiled in a legal battle with the city since April 2023 when its owners were accused of violating their lease agreement by not keeping the property in good condition. The city's parks department took over management of the building after the city settled with the former owner to evict them. The city finalized that settlement in October. Documents show the city agreed to pay nearly $278,000. In recent months, the city has been showing off the vacant space to interested parties, according to Smiley, who said the city still plans to issue a request for proposal (RFP) sometime this year. 'We're trying to gather feedback from prospective users about what the best use of that facility is,' Smiley added. 'They need us': Fundraisers launched for Matunuck Oyster Bar There are efforts underway to get the oyster bar up and running closer to home. Last Friday, state Rep. Carol Hagan McEntee and Sen. V. Susan Sosnowski introduced legislation that would allow the restaurant to set up outdoor seating in the parking lot across the street. Hagan McEntee's bill is set to be reviewed by the House Committee on Small Business on Tuesday. Sosnowski's companion legislation will also be discussed Tuesday in the Senate Committee on Housing and Municipal Government.
