RTA completes phase two of AI-driven Smart Pedestrian Signal Expansion Project
Crossing the street has just got a whole lot safer at 10 locations across Dubai, following the completion of the latest phase of a major traffic project. The Roads and Transport Authority of Dubai has announced that phase two of the Smart Pedestrian Signal Expansion Project is now in place at 10 spots in the emirate. The project uses smart technologies, such as artificial intelligence, to detect the movement of pedestrians on the pavement to allow them to cross the road with minimal fuss. The system also uses traditional push-button devices to register crossing requests, further boosting efficiency and timing control. Dynamic sensors automatically adjust signal timings in real-time based on pedestrian speed – allowing seniors, people of determination and children more time to cross the street. (Credit: RTA) The second phase of the RTA project means that there are now 27 locations in Dubai with the smart pedestrian signals in place. In this phase, Omar Bin Al Khattab Street, Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Street, Al Satwa Street, Salah Al Din Street, Amman Street, Al Qusais Street near labour camps and Oud Metha Street near a school zone were all chosen. The RTA selected these locations because of multiple sets of criteria – including the proximity of pedestrian crossings to each other, the number of pedestrian-related incidents at the location, the availability of bridges and the road classification. These locations are already benefiting from the new pedestrian crossing systems, according to Mohammed Al Ali, director of intelligent traffic systems at RTA's Traffic and Roads Agency. He said: 'Results have shown improved safety levels at these pedestrian crossings since the signals became operational, demonstrating the system's effectiveness in mitigating risk and enhancing the overall road experience for all users. 'The smart pedestrian signal system relies on advanced detection technologies using intelligent thermal cameras. 'These cameras operate around the clock, accurately detecting the presence and movement of pedestrians on sidewalks and while crossing, even in low-light or night-time conditions. 'The system integrates with push-button devices to register actual crossing requests, thereby enhancing signal efficiency and optimising timing control.'
