I flew on the best low-cost airline in Northern Europe – the price for a flight is crazy & we slept nearly the whole way

THE best airlines in Europe have been revealed - and I was lucky enough to fly on one of them during a long-haul flight. Norse Atlantic Airways was awarded the Best Low-Cost Airline in Northern Europe by this year's Skytrax World Airline Awards. 3 3 Not only that, but it also came in fifth place for the World's Best Long Haul Low Cost Airlines. And after a recent 11-hour flight with them, I definitely agree. I boarded the budget airline for a flight from London Gatwick to Cape Town. I splashed out on premium economy costing £3,583 - that may sound like a lot but it was nearly £1,500 cheaper than other rival airlines. Doing the long flight with my five-year-old son, it was worth every penny. He slept nearly the whole way from from 10pm to 7am, while I snatched a manageable 5ish hours. It might not have been a full night sleep but it was more than I had ever slept in standard economy. Premium seats also include ear plugs, eye masks, pillows and blankets at the start of the flight, as well as headphones and two meals. I was impressed with the food (after all, plane meals are notoriously hit and miss) with a tasty tortellini and cheesecake. But even the economy flights are pretty good, which we tried on our return home. Budget airline to launch brand new long-haul flights from the UK this year 3 While the seats are slimmer, we booked bulkhead seats which felt just as roomy (even for my 5ft10 self). We were happy with the paid-for snack options too, with hot sandwiches and ready noodle pots. It also felt much easier seeing as it was a day flight, and didn't need the blankets and pillows as much which were extra. Along with friendly staff, I was more than impressed with Norse - and they are next on my list to fly with again to Orlando. Other award-winning airlines include Qatar Airways, named the world's best airline for the ninth time. The Sun's Deputy Travel Editor Kara Godfrey and the Sun's Assistant Travel Editor Sophie Swietochowski both tried it out. And are some of our other airline reviews, including the airline with the best food.

AirAsia Triumphs As World's Best Low-Cost Airline For 16th Consecutive Year At Skytrax 2025

They've won at life! AirAsia has once again been named the World's Best Low-Cost Airline at the Skytrax World Airline Awards 2025, marking its 16th consecutive win. This reflects the airline's strong presence across ASEAN and beyond, with a network of over 130 destinations, affordable fares, and a focus on operational excellence. Through its multi-hub strategy in Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, the Philippines, and Cambodia, AirAsia continues to make travel more accessible, affordable, and seamless across Asia. At the Paris Air Show 2025 in France, Datuk Kamarudin Meranun, Chairman of Capital A and Co-Founder of AirAsia, accepted the award, saying: 'Sixteen years on, this recognition remains just as meaningful as ever. We started with a simple dream to make flying affordable for everyone. To be recognised for the 16th time reaffirms that we have stayed true to that mission and continue to soar high in the minds of the many millions of passengers who choose to fly with us each year. While this award is truly another fantastic achievement, we never rest on our laurels and it inspires us to go even further.' Tony Fernandes, CEO of Capital A and Co-Founder of AirAsia, shared his thoughts on the win, saying: 'This is a deeply emotional win for me. From flying just 200,000 guests in our first year to aiming to welcome our one billionth guest this year, this journey has been made possible by the unwavering support of our guests, and the tireless dedication of our incredible Allstars. Every challenge we have faced, every comeback we have made, was made possible by their trust and effort. We thank the Skytrax team for recognising our work, and I would like to share the award with my Allstars – it belongs to them. Thank you for believing in the dream.' Edward Plaisted, CEO of Skytrax said: 'We congratulate AirAsia on this fabulous achievement at the 2025 World Airline Awards. This success for a record sixteenth time is a clear reflection of their dedication to providing quality, affordable travel options to customers. This is a most competitive and fast growing market for low cost airlines, and this award demonstrates AirAsia's success.' The award also serves as a testament to the airline's contribution to connecting both primary and underserved secondary and tertiary cities. This model has enabled the launch of unique and strategic routes such as Kuala Lumpur-Labuan Bajo, Bangkok-Narathiwat, Manila-Tagbilaran, Jakarta-Silangit, and others expanding access to emerging travel corridors and tourism growth areas. Looking ahead, the airline is set to deepen its connectivity across Central Asia and the Middle East, marking a significant step forward in its ambition to become the first truly global low-cost network carrier. At the same time, AirAsia's continued emphasis on guest experience sets it apart. Having flown close to one billion guests, the airline maintains high levels of customer loyalty and brand advocacy across its key markets. Ranked as the 24th most valuable airline brand globally with a value of US$1.93 billion (RM8.22 billion), AirAsia reflects both strong regional roots and global appeal. '2nd isn't a bad thing': Singapore Airlines named world's second best airline for 2025

Photo: Depositphotos/Wirestock SINGAPORE: Singapore Airlines (SIA) has been ranked the world's second-best airline for 2025 by United Kingdom-based airline consultancy Skytrax. This year's 'Oscars of the aviation industry' was announced during a gala ceremony on June 17 at the Paris Air Show, in the Air and Space Museum's art deco Hall of Eight Columns of Le Bourget airport. In 2023, SIA was named the World's Best Airline for the fifth time. The number one spot this year went to Qatar Airways, marking its ninth win. Cathay Pacific, Emirates, and ANA (All Nippon Airways) came in third to fifth, respectively. SIA also took the top spot for this year's World's Best Cabin Crew, World's Best First Class Airline, and World's Best Business Class Airline, while placing third in the World's Best Economy Class Airline. Singapore's flagship carrier also scooped the accolade for the Best Airline in Asia. Meanwhile, its low-cost arm, Scoot, was awarded the World's Best Long-Haul Low-Cost Airline. Qatar's Qsuite blows SQ's business class out of the water any day of the week.' Despite being named the best business class airline, some commenters noted how 'cramped' SIA's seats have become, with one saying its 'business class is getting worse and worse as the years go by'. 'I don't like how claustrophobic the new A380 seat is and how it lacks privacy, so we get the worst of both worlds there. Also uncomfortable to sleep on. Hopefully, the new 2026 seat isn't as narrow as the current A380 seat,' he added. Another added, 'Hate how you have to get out of your seat to turn it into a bed in SQ. Plus the very cramped footwell, and the usually ridiculously high prices.' Still, one commenter pointed out, 'Anyway, 2nd isn't a bad thing in my opinion. It provides additional drive to SQ to improve, which is needed.' /TISG See also HSBC's high-stakes gamble: The future of banking in Asia Read also: Scoot to take over Jetstar Asia's Okinawa and Labuan Bajo routes Featured image by Depositphotos

It's official: this is Europe's best airline in 2025

The World Airline Awards produce a list of – you guessed it – the world's best airlines. But what would be even more useful is a roundup of all the absolute finest operators with services near you, right? Well, handily, Skytrax's annual customer satisfaction survey gains insight from travellers from more than 100 different countries, enabling it to produce regional top 10 lists, too. So, frequent flyers in Europe – listen up. In the newly-released 2025 edition of the awards, Turkish Airlines has claimed the crown as the best operator in Europe. Unsurprisingly, it also won first place for the best airline in southern Europe, and the accolade for the world's best business class onboard catering. Good stuff, eh? But, if you're flying with Turkish Airlines soon, there's a new rule you should be aware of. Time Out reported back in May that Türkiye will soon issue fines for those who stand up after a flight has landed but before the seatbelt sign has been switched off, and Turkish Airlines, the country's national carrier, will be the first to implement this rule. You can read more about it here. Air France claimed second place, and Swiss International Airlines claimed third. Read on to find out if your go-to operator made this prestigious top 10. These are Europe's 10 best airlines in 2025 Turkish Airlines Air France Swiss International Air Lines British Airways Lufthansa Virgin Atlantic Iberia KLM Royal Dutch Airlines Austrian Airlines Finnair ICYMI: These are the world's very best airports.
