Disney might have quietly canceled a beloved 'Star Wars' show — despite rating 92% on Rotten Tomatoes

"Star Wars" shows have been in a rough spot lately, but "Skeleton Crew" felt like a rare bright spot when it premiered at the end of last year. The show debuted to rave reviews. It initially scored a 94% "fresh" rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes. As of this writing, it still sits at an impressive 92%. Our staff liked it as well. Our own Martin Shore said it was a "refreshing spin on a beloved franchise," and our TV/AV staff writer Ryan Epps also came away impressed. Unfortunately, though, we may have seen the last of "Star Wars: Skeleton Crew." One of the stars of the show is Ryan Kiera Armstrong as Fern, a human girl from the planet At Attin who is integral to the show. If there's a season 2, she'll almost certainly not be coming back. On May 15, Sarah Michelle Gellar jumped on a video call with Armstrong to reveal that she would be the star of the "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" reboot, which was then posted to Instagram for all to see (h/t Bam Smack Pow). Armstrong taking on a lead role in another series almost certainly precludes her from returning for a potential "Star Wars: Skeleton Crew" season 2. It wouldn't be impossible, but it'd be an incredible feat for her to have a starring role in both shows. However, there's not necessarily a need to bring Armstrong's character, Fern, back for a season 2. The show ends in a way that would satisfyingly wrap up Fern's arc, if needed. Get instant access to breaking news, the hottest reviews, great deals and helpful tips. Of course, the problem is that the show satisfyingly wrapped up ... well, everything. It could stand on its own as a miniseries, and given that "Star Wars" seems to still be in the process of righting the ship, I think they'll probably leave well enough alone and leave a majority of the "Star Wars" TV shows behind. Malcolm has been with Tom's Guide since 2022, and has been covering the latest in streaming shows and movies since 2023. He's not one to shy away from a hot take, including that "John Wick" is one of the four greatest films ever made. Here's what he's been watching lately:

Entertainment gossip and news from Newsweek's network of contributors With the news that Ryan Kiera Armstrong of "Skeleton Crew" fame will be the new Slayer joining Sarah Michelle Gellar in her continuing adventures in the "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" sequel series, the continuation of the Buffyverse feels closer than ever. Read More: 'Buffy' Reboot Casts 'Star Wars' Actress as New Slayer Since it's a sure bet the new "Buffy" series will include a guest appearance or two from alum of the original series, we thought it would be fun to cast our votes for the characters whose returns are absolutely essential. Sarah Michelle Gellar as Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Sarah Michelle Gellar as Buffy the Vampire Slayer. 20th Century Studios 5. Faith (Eliza Dushku) While she was a villain, Faith was one of Buffy's fiercest enemies, but with her redemption in Season 7 of the original "Buffy" series, she would make an even more satisfying guest appearance as an ally. Presumably, Buffy's going to be something of a mentor to Armstrong's younger Slayer, and an episode or two where Faith returns to teach her an alternate, less "academic" approach to slaying would be interesting. 4. Angel (David Boreanaz) There are going to be some obvious difficulties in bringing back any characters who played vampires - how can they play characters blessed with eternal youth when the actors are decades older? But the doomed romance between Buffy and Angel was at the very heart of the original series. Not to feature at least a cameo from the guy feels criminal. 3. Spike (James Marsters) Spike sacrifices himself in the original "Buffy" series finale, but thankfully, he's brought back in the fifth and final season of the spinoff "Angel". It might be a stretch to say that Spike and Buffy have any kind of unfinished business and it would likely be a good idea to leave any kind of romance between them in the past. But still, few characters in "Buffy" were as charismatic or beloved as Spike, and like Angel he deserves at least a cameo or two. 2. Giles (Anthony Stewart Head) As Buffy is trying to teach the new Slayer the ropes, she's going to find herself challenged, and who better to both give Buffy some tips and to perhaps enjoy watching her fall into familiar pitfalls than the librarian who suffered so many concussions as Buffy's Watcher? 1. Willow (Alyson Hannigan) Perhaps no one needs to have a guest appearance in the new series than Alyson Hannigan as Buffy's best friend Willow. Their friendship was the glue that kept the Scoobs together, and we know if Willow could help Buffy with anything to do with the new challenges she's facing, the powerful witch would be there in a second. "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" Reboot Pilot Casts Ryan Kiera Armstrong in Titular Role

Yara Sameh "In every generation, there is a chosen one', — so says the opening narration in early episodes of the classic cult series Buffy the Vampire Slayer. The 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer' reboot pilot at Hulu has found its new slayer in Ryan Kiera Armstrong. Armstrong has been cast in a lead role in the pilot opposite returning star Sarah Michelle Gellar. The pilot was originally announced at Hulu back in February. While the exact plot details are under wraps, sources previously said the pilot will focus on a new slayer with Gellar appearing in a recurring role as Buffy. 'From the moment I saw Ryan's audition, I knew there was only one girl that I wanted by my side,' Gellar said in a statement. 'To have that kind of emotional intelligence, and talent at such a young age is truly gift. The bonus is that her smile lights up even the darkest room.' Gellar also shared a video on Instagram in which she tells Armstrong she got the lead role. Nora Zuckerman and Lila Zuckerman are attached to write, showrun, and executive produce. Chloé Zhao is attached to direct and executive produce under her Book of Shadows production banner. Gellar executive produces, along with Gail Berman. Fran Kuzui and Kaz Kuzui will executive produce via Suite B, while Dolly Parton will executive produce via Sandollar. 'We are so overjoyed to have found this generation's slayer in Ryan Kiera Armstrong, she absolutely blew us away — there is no question in our mind that she is the chosen one,' the Zuckermans said. Armstrong most recently appeared in the Disney+ 'Star Wars' series 'Skeleton Crew.' Her other TV credits include 'Anne with an E' at Netflix, 'American Horror Story,' and the upcoming FX series 'The Lowdown.' In film, she led the 'Firestarter' reboot opposite Zac Efron and has also starred in big budget films like 'The Tomorrow War' and Marvel's 'Black Widow.' Armstrong first broke out in the feature adaptation of 'The Art of Racing in the Rain.' 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer' originated as a film starring Kristy Swanson in the title role. Whedon wrote the film with Fran Kuzui directing. It was released in 1992. Five years later, the series version starring Gellar debuted on The WB. It would air on The WB for its first five seasons before airing its final two seasons on UPN. The cast also included Nicholas Brendon, Alyson Hannigan, Carpenter, Anthony Stewart Head, David Boreanaz, Seth Green, and James Marsters among others. Boreanaz would then head up the spinoff series 'Angel' at The WB for five seasons. read more New Tourism Route To Launch in Old Cairo Ahmed El Sakka-Led Play 'Sayidati Al Jamila' to Be Staged in KSA on Dec. 6 Mandy Moore Joins Season 2 of "Dr. Death" Anthology Series Don't Miss These Movies at 44th Cairo Int'l Film Festival Today Amr Diab to Headline KSA's MDLBEAST Soundstorm 2022 Festival Arts & Culture Mai Omar Stuns in Latest Instagram Photos Arts & Culture "The Flash" to End with Season 9 Arts & Culture Ministry of Culture Organizes four day Children's Film Festival Arts & Culture Canadian PM wishes Muslims Eid-al-Adha News Egypt confirms denial of airspace access to US B-52 bombers Lifestyle Pistachio and Raspberry Cheesecake Domes Recipe News Ayat Khaddoura's Final Video Captures Bombardment of Beit Lahia News Australia Fines Telegram $600,000 Over Terrorism, Child Abuse Content Arts & Culture Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban's $4.7M LA Home Burglarized Sports Former Al Zamalek Player Ibrahim Shika Passes away after Long Battle with Cancer Sports Neymar Announced for Brazil's Preliminary List for 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers News Prime Minister Moustafa Madbouly Inaugurates Two Indian Companies Arts & Culture New Archaeological Discovery from 26th Dynasty Uncovered in Karnak Temple Business Fear & Greed Index Plummets to Lowest Level Ever Recorded amid Global Trade War

Rebel yell 🚀 We missed you, "Star Wars." Back in the day – when it was mainly a movie franchise – the galaxy far, far away was one of my favorite things. Since its standout early years, and the prequel and sequel trilogies, "Star Wars" has become mainly a TV thing – some of it good, some of it forgettable. The second season of "Andor" is here now, however, to remind us of how vital this space opera still can be. Put that on your to-watch list, for sure, but also consider Ben Affleck's sequel "The Accountant 2" and some new movies on streaming services. (Hint: Tom Hardy + Netflix = action-flick gold.) Now on to the good stuff: See Diego Luna rebel against the Empire in 'Andor' (the best 'Star Wars' show!) The "Star Wars" shows have been a mixed bag – as much as I love "The Mandalorian," other projects like "Skeleton Crew" (aka cosmic "Goonies") and "Obi-Wan Kenobi" were pretty mid. Thankfully, the best is back: The first three episodes of "Andor" Season 2 are streaming now. The prequel to the "Rogue One" movie (itself a prequel to the original 1977 jam) finds Cassian Andor (Diego Luna) helping the Rebel Alliance come together as the evil Empire increases its fascistic presence across the galaxy. TV critic Kelly Lawler is also a fan, writing in her ★★★★ review that the new season is "a deeply affecting narrative about love, sacrifice and belief." I talked with creator Tony Gilroy and Luna about the political and psychological impact of this season – where main character are stressed to the max in an increasingly unstable world – and chatted with Denise Gough and Kyle Soller about the show's unlikely Imperial romance. Watch Ben Affleck, Jon Bernthal team up as action-hero bros in 'The Accountant 2' Cable TV reruns made Ben Affleck's 2016 action thriller "The Accountant" a cult hit, and he's back – with way less math this time – in the sequel. "The Accountant 2" (in theaters now) isn't as good or as unconventional as the first, though it's a decently enjoyable time watching Affleck's CPA with high-functioning autism and special-forces skills solve mysteries with his hitman brother (Jon Bernthal). (Peep my ★★½ review.) My colleague Erin Jensen talked with Affleck and Bernthal about the chemistry that sparked the sibling bond in the movie, which includes a surprising amount of country line dancing and a bunch of violent scenes chock-full of bullets and broken bones. 'Violence was always the language which was the easiest way for them to tell each other that they loved each other,' Bernthal says. Stream 'Babygirl,' 'Havoc' and more on your fave streaming services In my ongoing quest to make sure my Watch Party crew is never without new movies to watch, I rounded up this month's list of notable flicks on the various streaming services. There are theatrical releases that you can now watch on your couch, like Nicole Kidman's "Babygirl" and "Companion" on Max, "Wolf Man" on Peacock and "G20" on Prime Video. The best of the bunch? Definitely watch Jude Law in Hulu's "The Order" but also don't miss Tom Hardy in Netflix's "Havoc," playing a dirty cop on a quasi-rescue mission amid chaotic car chases, ultraviolent fight scenes and Hong Kong-style martial-arts throwdowns. Even more goodness to check out! Got thoughts, questions, ideas, concerns, compliments or maybe even some recs for me? Andor series 2 review: can the best Star Wars spin-off touch the sublime again?

Star Wars sure can be a struggle these days; the most recent trilogy of movies was a mess of half-baked ideas, while, over the last few years, Disney+ has challenged fans with Ahsoka, The Acolyte and Skeleton Crew — series so lifeless that I'm not convinced they actually exist. The anomaly was Andor, a political thriller that ran for 12 innovative, intense episodes in 2022 and, like a lightsaber at the end of the tunnel, promised to return. The show is about how the titular Andor (Diego Luna) forged the rebellion, aka the one with Luke Skywalker that will one day blow up the Death Star and Darth Vader's crew. As a Reddit user put it: 'Andor is Blade Runner, [
