Restaurant review: China Tang

What do we really know about Cantonese food? Other than the comfort classics we crave on movie nights – the silky dumplings, crispy spring rolls, spicy noodles out of delivery boxes – we've tried it all, we love it, we keep coming back for more. But here's the question – what does Cantonese cuisine look like when it's dressed up? When it's served with ceremony and plated like art. That's where China Tang comes in. This Dubai debut at the Lana Promenade brings with it the legacy of the original London icon – founded by the late Sir David Tang – it's refined, nostalgic, and so well-executed it makes you rethink what 'Cantonese food' has meant to you up until now. The story This isn't just another upscale opening in a city full of them. The original China Tang in London's Dorchester is a legend in its own right, known for its mastering approach to traditional Cantonese cuisine and impeccable service. China Tang was Sir David Tang's passion project – mixing the glamour of 1930s Shanghai with authentic Cantonese culinary heritage. Its Dubai outpost sits in the Lana promenade, by the waters of Marasi Bay Marina, echoing the grandeur of its London and Hong Kong siblings and keeping that same DNA, while making space for its own story. The space Walking into China Tang feels like stepping into a different city, maybe even a different decade. The interiors lean into 1930s Shanghai glamour – mirrored walls, art deco patterns, velvet textures, dimmed lighting that makes everything (and everyone) glow. There's drama in the design in a playful way. The colour palette is vibrant but somehow still cosy. And then there's the view. Step out to the terrace and you're met with a front-row seat to Marasi Bay, all lit up and lowkey stunning. The presentation: Where eyes eat first At China Tang, the artistry begins long before your first bite. The plates themselves are a statement – hand-painted ceramics and elegant serving trays. The dim sum arrives in bamboo steamers, each lid lift revealing something too pretty to touch (but you do, of course). Larger dishes come on custom trays or carved platters that feel less like serviceware and more like a curated frame for what's on display. Every dish arrives framed like a work of art, even the rice shows up looking styled. The food This is not fusion. This is tradition, refined. The menu celebrates the comfort dishes we love – but levels them up with technique, balance, and quality ingredients. We kicked things off with the Foie Gras Cherries (Dhs198) – rich, delicate bites wrapped in a glossy cherry glaze with just the right touch of sweetness. Alongside, the Spinach in sesame and peanut dressing brought texture (Dhs88). Then we had the golden shrimp Har-Kau (Dhs88), Crispy Seafood Prawn Cheung-fan (Dhs68), which was easily a favourite. We also had the vegetable spring rolls (Dhs78), Sir David's Hot & Sour soup (Dhs88) – a signature dish and another favourite. While the iconic Beijing Duck is a signature main, we opted for a different direction, and we weren't disappointed. We had the Crispy Shredded Beef (Dhs218), Stir-fried Scallop & Asparagus (Dhs198). For dessert, we went with the Chilled Sichuan Jelly (Dhs78), served with a full table-side presentation where we picked our favourite fruits and toppings – a refreshing, light finish to the meal. We also tried the Chocolate and Jasmine Tea Cake (Dhs98), which was beautifully balanced and absolutely delicious. Verdict China Tang reframes what Cantonese fine dining looks like in Dubai – an iconic name delivering on both taste and atmosphere. Whether you're here for the legacy or the dim sum, you'll leave impressed. We came for the food, stayed for the vibe, and we'll be back for more. Victoria Beckham paid tribute to her 'knight in shining armour' husband David on Saturday after he was finally honoured with a knighthood. The former footballer, 50, proudly led the King's Birthday Honours list after being in the running for more than a decade. Congratulating her husband, Victoria shared a loved-up photo to Instagram and wrote: 'You've always been my knight in shining armour, but now it's official. Sir David!!! What an honour, I couldn't be prouder of you. 'Your dedication to the things that matter most — your country, your work, your passion, and most of all, your family — has never wavered. 'The way you've touched so many lives over the years with kindness and humility speaks volumes about the man you are and continues to inspire us everyday.' She concluded: 'But above all else, I'm so, so proud to call you mine. I love you so much xxxx' David declared himself 'immensely proud' as he finally received a knighthood after years of being snubbed. He said he 'never could have imagined I would receive such a truly humbling honour', as his Spice Girl wife Victoria also becomes Lady Beckham. The former England football captain previously missed out when a 'red flag' from the taxman blocked him becoming a Sir in 2014. Leaked emails suggested he had savaged the nominations committee as 'unappreciative c***s' and branded their decision 'a disgrace, to be honest', although his office subsequently insisted they had been doctored by a hacker. But that was all behind him today as Sir David proudly led the King's Birthday Honours list recognising 1,200 people from community champions to cultural icons. The day before Sir David was given the honour, he was seen chatting with the King at a St James's Palace ceremony for the monarch's foundation, of which the retired footballer is an ambassador. He has been made a knight for his services to sport and to charity. He said: 'Growing up in East London with parents and grandparents who were so patriotic and proud to be British I never could have imagined I would receive such a truly humbling honour.' David added: 'To have played for and captained my country was the greatest privilege of my career and literally a boyhood dream come true.' He said that, off the pitch, his charity work 'gives me so much fulfilment', and added: 'It will take a little while for the news to sink in but I'm immensely proud and it's such an emotional moment for me to share with my family.' He has been made a knight for his services to sport and to charity, having partnered with Unicef and campaigned with Malaria No More, a charity working to eradicate the disease. Sir David was made an OBE in 2003 and has been in the running for a knighthood for more than a decade.

David Beckham ‘immensely proud' of knighthood in King's Birthday Honours

Former England captain David Beckham said he is 'immensely proud' to have been given a knighthood in the King's Birthday Honours. The sports star, who celebrated his 50th birthday last month, is being honoured for services to sport and charity. Sir David said in a statement to the PA news agency: 'Growing up in East London with parents and grandparents who were so patriotic and proud to be British I never could have imagined I would receive such a truly humbling honour. 'To have played for and captained my country was the greatest privilege of my career and literally a boyhood dream come true. 'Off the pitch I have been fortunate to have the opportunity to represent Britain around the world and work with incredible organisations that are supporting communities in need and inspiring the next generation. 'I'm so lucky to be able to do the work that I do and I'm grateful to be recognised for work that gives me so much fulfilment. It will take a little while for the news to sink in but I'm immensely proud and it's such an emotional moment for me to share with my family.' Sir David married his wife Victoria in 1999 and the couple share four children together – Brooklyn, Romeo, Cruz and Harper. He had been set on becoming a professional footballer as a child and as a teenager he joined Manchester United as a trainee, forming part of the class of '92 that won the FA Youth Cup, along with Ryan Giggs and Gary Neville. The sports star from north east London made his Premier League debut for United in 1995 and was part of the team that earned a dramatic Champions League final victory in 1999 when they beat Bayern Munich with two late goals. In total he scored 85 goals and collected honours including six Premier League titles and two FA Cups as a footballer, before retiring from the sport in 2013. Alongside his football career Sir David has supported a number of charity causes and launched a fundraising appeal for Unicef in April ahead of his milestone 50th birthday. He has served as a Goodwill Ambassador for humanitarian aid organisation Unicef since 2005 and is a founding member of the charity Malaria No More UK's leadership council. Philip Goodwin, Unicef UK chief executive said: 'We're so thrilled that our Unicef Goodwill Ambassador, David Beckham, has been awarded a knighthood in the King's Birthday Honours. 'David Beckham has done an incredible amount to advocate for children's rights over the last 20 years. 'He became a Goodwill Ambassador in 2005 and launched 7: The David Beckham Unicef Fund in 2015 – with the goal of helping children around the world, especially girls, break down barriers including bullying, violence, child marriage and missed education. 'He's travelled extensively to see Unicef's work and used his profile to raise awareness, as well as support our flagship fundraising campaign Soccer Aid for Unicef and launch global fundraising appeals.' Last year the former sports star, who has described himself as a 'huge Royalist', was named an ambassador for the King's Foundation, an educational charity established by the King in 1990. In February Sir David appeared in a video helping to launch the hunt for '35 under 35', a network of influencers who can fly the flag for the charity which reflects Charles' vision. He is also known for his stylish clothing choices, and in 1998 was named most stylish man of the year by GQ magazine and he has modelled for the likes of H&M, Armani and Boss. In 2018 he was appointed Ambassadorial President of the British Fashion Council where he assisted the BFC in its search for young British talent from all backgrounds. His wife, Victoria, turned her hand to fashion designing after her time in the Spice Girls and Sir David and their four children are often spotted at her shows. Sir David is currently a part-owner of MLS side Inter Miami, and is also the co-founder of Studio 99, the production company behind the hit Netflix series Beckham. He was formerly appointed an officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 2003.
