One of NYC's best bars is coming to Hawksmoor Chicago for one night only

You don't get named number five on North America's 50 Best Bars list without taking some risks. Sip & Guzzle, a two-level cocktail haven in New York City's West Village expertly stirs buzzy NYC nightlife with Japanese cocktail culture. And, now, for one night, and one night only, that acclaimed drinks team have partnered up with Hawksmoor Chicago, a Windy City favorite well-known for its midwestern hospitality and steak-and-seafood spread. What began in east London in 2006 has evolved into a culinary juggernaut with restaurants in New York and Chicago, earning Hawksmoor placement on the World's Best Steak Restaurant list as well as James Beard Foundation mentions and Tales of the Cocktail accolades. So you can expect to be in very good hands with this pop-up match-up, which takes over the Chicago venue tonight, June 13 from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. (final entry is at 9:30 p.m. Attendees can expect two different bar vibes, all in one epic night: Guzzle will bring crushable cocktails and highballs, while Sip will deliver refined, Japanese-style creations. Plus, the Hawksmoor bar team will also be serving up select cocktails from their own menu. Those boozy tipples will be available for purchase a la carte, on Hawksmoor's second-floor bar while supplies last. While walk-in imbibers are welcome, reservations are recommended— RSVP via Evite is encouraged but does not guarantee a reservation. The Sip & Guzzle Chicago takeover is a natural fit, given the Windy City cred of the team behind the NYC bar: owners Shingo Gokan's and Steve Schneider's combined resume includes not only NYC favorites like Angel's Share and Employees Only but also Chicago powerhouse Alinea, where chef Mike Bagale—who's in charge of the high-meets-low bar fare, including that $150 Wagyu sandwich—once served as the executive chef.

Sip & Guzzle is hosting six of the best bars in America for a one-night-only "US Bar Tour"

It should be no surprise, when it comes to the best bars in the world, New York City is the one to beat. And this isn't just us blowing smoke. According to The World's Best list, 50 Best Bars in North America, out of the 26 U.S. bars to make the ranking, 11 of them can be found right here in New York. Making quite the debut, Sip & Guzzle nabbed a number five spot on the list. With just over a year under its belt, Shingo Gokan and Steve Schneider's bi-level bar broke the top five for its 'Japanese beers, perfect highballs, and 'crushable' cocktails' found at Guzzle. Meanwhile, the Japanese drinking room down below, Sip, was recognized for its 'sophisticated vibe' and luxurious snacks, namely the Royale with Cheese Meal made with Wagyu. And while competition is part of the game, the West Village bar is showing us there is nothing but love between its fellow bartenders, so much so, thatthey are inviting some of the country's best bars to NYC for one night only. On June 9, Sip & Guzzle is inviting six of the most acclaimed cocktail bars in the country for a one-night only bar experience. A bit of a pre-party in preparation for the industry trade event, Bar Convent Brooklyn, the bar is hosting high level talent across both of their bars for a mixology event that can't be missed. The first hour of the evening is dedicated to the nation's capital as Washington D.C's Service Bar (number 33) will take over the top floor, while the speakeasy concept, Allegory (number 45), will feel right at home by taking over the basement of Sip. Later in the evening, Chicago's best will take to tending bar, including Logan Square's neo-dive bar, Best Intentions (number 25) and Julia Momosé's omakase cocktail counter, Kumiko (number 10). Two stalwarts of the San Francisco scene will close out the evening: Trick Dog (number 71) and True Laurel (number 17), who received the Ketel One Sustainable Bar Award from The 50 Best brand last year for its local sourcing and waste-free cocktails. Of course, this isn't the first time Sip & Guzzle has hosted some of the best bars of the scene, international talent included. In February, two bars from across the pond, The Connaught Bar and Satan's Whiskers, popped up for an all-out London takeover. And for their one anniversary, Ryohei Yamagishi of Shanghai's retro 80s cocktail bar, The Odd Couple, was featured behind the bar.

These U.S. bars were just named the best in North America

If you're like a lot of us, you look forward to a bar visit on your vacation. It's always fun to see seasonal or specialty cocktails on the list, and soaking up the boozy atmosphere and music can be elating. (Truth be told, we also love a great mocktail and staying sharp for the evening). So if you're thinking of building a trip around visiting one of the continent's best bars, we're thrilled for you. Winners of North America's Best Bars 2025 have just been announced, and 26 of those 50 are here in the U.S. There are also 14 in Mexico (including the No. 1 pick, Handshake Speakeasy in Mexico City), eight from Canada and two from the Caribbean. The first U.S. bar on the list is Superbueno in New York, which was also No. 2 last year —way to hold strong! Jewel of the South in New Orleans rose from the No. 6 spot to No. 4. Overstory in New York fell from No. 3 to No. 6, taking over the Jewel's former spot. Other U.S. bars in the top 10 are Sip & Guzzle in New York, showing up at No. 5 out of nowhere (it wasn't on the list last year) and Kumiko in Chicago, rising to No. 10 from No. 19. Sip & Guzzle has an enormously interesting backstory, based on an 1874 contingent of Japanese samurai who came to New York, where bartender Jerry Thomas invented a cocktail specifically for the Japanese diplomat Tateishi Onojirou Noriyuki. Today in Tokyo, Shingo Gokan's The SG Club imagines the kind of bar those samurai would have opened upon returning, and in a playful turn, Sip & Guzzle (with the same initials) imagines the bar that the samurai would have opened if they returned to New York with everything they'd learned. That's for sure on my visit list the next time I'm in New York! The Best Bars in North America 2025: 1. Handshake Speakeasy, Mexico City 2. Superbueno, New York 3. Tlecān, Mexico City 4. These 11 NYC bars were just named the very best in North America

The 50 Best brand, behind all sorts of world-spanning culinary lists, just unveiled its 1 to 50 ranking of the best bars in North America and, once again, New York dominates the well regarded survey. Although Mexico City's Handshake Speakeasy was crowned the top drinking den in the region for the second year in the row, New York distinguished itself as a premier destination, home to 11 of the 26 mentioned U.S. locales on the list, including Superbueno, which lands at the number two spot for the second year in a row. "Whether you visit on a Monday or a Saturday, Superbueno is perpetually full and poppin'," writes our Food and Drink Editor Morgan Carter in her review of the downtown Manhattan destination. A bunch of new entries also made appearances: the subterranean Sip & Guzzle at number 5 and Daniel Humm's Clemente Bar at number 11. Usual—deserving!—suspects abound as well: there's elegant cocktail destination Overstory (number 6), the award-winning Martiny's (number 15), perennial favorite Employees Only (number 18), the ever-popular Double Chicken Please (number 19), Maison Premiere in Brooklyn (number 33), Japanese-American cocktail bar Katana Kitten (number 42), old-time go-to Angel's Share (number 43) and legendary MacDougal Street Italian café turned small plates restaurant and cocktail bar in 2015 Dante (number 46). Basically, no matter what area of New York you're in, you can find a stellar cocktail that's been recognized as such by a team of drinking experts. Oh, how we love thee, New York.
