Sindhu was launched on June 18 to evacuate Indian nationals from Iran amid rising fears of an all-out Israeli-American military strikes on Iran. What Was The Need For Operation Sindhu? The operation was initiated following the June 13 Israeli airstrikes on Iranian territory, a significant escalation in the ongoing Israel-Iran conflict, which heightened safety concerns for foreigners in Iran. Facing growing instability, the government launched this mission to quickly evacuate citizens before the situation escalated further. Who are being evacuated as part of the mission? Indian students, professionals, seafarers, pilgrims and others located in Iran's conflict zones. The first group of 110 Indian students was moved overland to Armenia, then flown to New Delhi on Wednesday. They landed at Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport on Thursday. Among them, 90 are from Jammu and Kashmir. Flights have been planned, possibly via Turkmenistan, to evacuate more Indians. Meanwhile, the MEA control rooms are operating round-the-clock for people in distress. Why Was Operation Named 'Sindhu?' While there has been no official word on the reason, historically Sindhu is known as a river. In Sanskrit, 'Sindhu' literally means 'river' or 'ocean'. It's also the name of Indus river, one of the major rivers in the Indian subcontinent. Another historical significance is that India is said to derieve its name from Sindhu. The Persians pronounced 'Sindhu' as Hindu, which eventually became India in Greek and Latin usage. The operation's title likely symbolizes a large journey — representing India's commitment to crossing borders for the safety of its citizens. Execution Strategy Of Operation Sindhu Evacuation Routes & Transport The primary route is the overland escorted travel from northern Iran (e.g., Urmia) into Armenia, then onward by chartered flights from Yerevan to New Delhi. An arrangement has been made for alternate corridors too, which includes transit through Turkmenistan, leveraging commercial or special flights. Who Are Involved In Evacuation Mission? The Indian Air Force and commercial carriers like IndiGo are involved in flying back Indian citizens from Iran. There are Ministry of External Affairs-led 24×7 embassy helplines and crisis-control centers. I'm not too far away: Sindhu after fighting defeat; Satwik-Chirag win
The last time PV Sindhu beat a top-10 ranked rival in the BWF circuit was October last year. Needless to say, the shuttler has predominantly struggled to replicate that kind of touch since then. On Thursday, Sindhu, displaying shades of her well-known fighting prowess, was in sight of repeating that feat but she agonisingly missed out. On the other hand, Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty had to put up a fight before securing a win. Up against Pornpawee Chochuwong, a World No 8 from Thailand, in the ongoing Indonesia Open, Sindhu fought tooth and nail to be in contention until the closing stages of the marathon match that lasted 78 minutes. However, Pornpawee, the India Open runner-up, held her nerves to walk away with victory. The eventual score read 20-22, 21-10, 21-18 in the 27-year-old's favour. It was yet another setback for Sindhu. However, the double Olympic medallist is encouraged by her latest effort. "A lot to learn from this match and this tournament as well and prepare for the next event," she said after the match. "Having a new coach, it took some time to come together and accordingly work you get a new coach, sometimes it takes time. Both need to understand each other. Things are going well and of course, there's a lot of scope to improve. I think we are on the right track," she noted. Sindhu, who has four first-round exits this year, has struggled against to find any sort of rhythm this year. Given her current predicament, the last few days have been slightly better for the 29-year-old. She had beaten Nozomi Okuhara in the opening round. Just a few days ago, she had stretched China's Yue Fie, the 2020 Olympic champ and current World No 5, before losing in three games during the Singapore Open. "Playing like this, I'm positive that I'm not that far away (from big wins). But it's just one tournament at a time for me and it's also important to go back and learn from the mistakes because every tournament is new. I think it's not too far away," she assessed.

I can see that, and I'm positive. And of course, my coach and I are working hard to come up. So yeah, I hope that we'll be there soon," Sindhu added. The star Indian shuttler, who has won five world championship medals, including a gold, believes that badminton has evolved over the last 10 years. 'The game has changed, I would say, in terms of I think back then in 2016, I think it was more of an attacking game. But I think now it's more of like, you know, long rallies and, you know, it's more of the clear and drops," Sindhu said.

Two-time Olympic medallist PV Sindhu faltered in the deciding game to lose to world number 8 Pornpawee Chochuwong of Thailand in the women's singles second round of the Indonesia Open Super 1000 badminton tournament here on Thursday. Sindhu squandered a 15-11 lead in the decider to lose the match 22-20, 10-21, 18-21 in a 78-minute gruelling battle. "I think I should have converted it to win. I was leading 16-13 in the third set, but I think from there also it was a bit faster so I had to control a lot more. From there, she took the lead and I think I made it equal at 18 all. It was anybody's game at that point of time," Sindhu said. "But overall, I'm happy with my performance. It would have been really good if I would have converted it into a win today. But yeah, a lot to learn from this match and this tournament as well and prepare for the next one." Sindhu looked in control after overturning a 10-16 deficit to take the opening game. With 15-11 up in the decider, the momentum was firmly on her side but a series of errors proved costly.
