Highway graft probe: MACC records Tan Sri's statement for over seven hours

KUALA LUMPUR: A Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) investigation team vehicle was seen leaving the residence of a businessman with the title Tan Sri after recording his statement for more than seven hours, Sinar Harian reports. The Malay language daily reported that MACC recorded the individual's statement to assist in investigations related to the misappropriation of funds from a sukuk for a highway project. A car carrying two investigation officers was seen departing from the location at approximately 4:30pm Thursday (June 19). Earlier, the MACC investigation team arrived at the residence at around 9:10am to record the individual's statement. Observations revealed that the residence area was still under tight security by auxiliary police officers, including the installation of barricade cones to prevent the public from approaching the location. On Monday (June 16), MACC chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki reported that the recording of the individual's statement under investigation would continue Thursday. This is the third time the investigation team has taken statements, following similar actions on June 11 and 12. Previously, the MACC seized domestic assets totaling RM141mil and is currently tracing overseas assets worth RM15mil linked to the misappropriation of funds from the highway construction project's sukuk. The seized assets include individual accounts amounting to RM4.5mil, company accounts totaling RM33mil, luxury condominiums and land valued at RM24.5mil, luxury watches worth RM26mil, nine luxury cars valued at RM7.65mil, and jewellery and diamonds worth RM10mil. Other seized items include luxury handbags valued at RM6mil, gold bars, statues, and coins estimated at RM3mil, and four horses valued at RM400,000.

Security in Kuala Lumpur assured despite recent shooting incidents: Malaysia police

Both shooting cases are believed to have specific targets due to feuds. PHOTO: SIN CHEW DAILY KUALA LUMPUR - Despite two open shooting cases reported within four days in Brickfields and Cheras recently, police assure that the security level in the capital is still under control and peaceful. Inspector-General of Police, Tan Sri Razarudin Husain, stated that both shooting cases are believed to have specific targets due to feuds. He mentioned that the public in the capital need not worry about safety and public order. 'As stated by the Kuala Lumpur Police Chief earlier, both incidents are believed to have occurred due to feuds. 'I want to emphasise that both incidents were not random shootings but had specific motives. 'So, the public need not worry because the security level around the capital is still under control,' he said on June 18. However, he stated that the police, through the Kuala Lumpur Contingent along with various other elements, will continue to enhance control and intensify operations to ensure the security around the capital is guaranteed. 'Kuala Lumpur is still safe, and the police will ensure the public's safety remains guaranteed. 'There is no need to worry, and (members of) the public who have information are also asked to come forward to assist the police,' he said. Sinar Harian previously reported two shooting incidents occurring within four days in the capital believed to be due to feuds between suspects and victims. Kuala Lumpur Police Chief, Datuk Rusdi Mohd Isa, stated that both criminal shooting cases that occurred were due to issues outside the Kuala Lumpur Contingent which were brought to the capital. He said, based on the police's initial investigations, the shooting incident involving two men in front of a shopping complex in Jalan Loke Yew, Cheras, at midnight on June 17, is believed to have stemmed from smuggling activities in Sibu, Sarawak. 'As for the shooting incident that occurred in Brickfields on June 13, it is believed to have resulted from a conflict in criminal activities occurring in Selangor,' he said. SST is not 'divine law', can be reviewed, says PM polsec

THE government is open to reviewing the extension of the Sales and Services Tax (SST), which will take effect on July 1, said Prime Minister (PM) Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's political secretary (polsec) Kamil Abdul Munim (picture). He was reported to have said that the extension of the SST is not 'God's law' and it can be reviewed if necessary. 'Every policy will cause complaints in the early stages, that's normal. But in the end, the government will ensure that it is adjusted so that it does not burden the majority of the people. 'I don't think the government will close the door to reviewing this policy if there is a specific segment or sector that needs reconsideration. 'This is not God's law, so if there is a need for improvement, then it should be reviewed,' he said as quoted by Sinar Harian last night. The government previously announced the extension of the SST to several categories of imported fruits, a move that received mixed reactions, including concerns about its impact on the cost of living for the people. Defending the decision, Anwar sparked criticism when he used avocados as an example of an imported luxury fruit typically enjoyed by the high-income group. However, several parties pointed out that imported products also include fruits such as apples and lemons, which are not grown in Malaysia but are widely consumed, including by the low-income group. Explaining further, Kamil said the main purpose of the SST expansion is to strengthen the country's tax base, which is currently among the lowest in the South-East Asian region, while ensuring it does not burden the people. He also stressed that basic necessities should be ensured not to be affected by the SST expansion, which he said is necessary to strengthen the country's fiscal base. Kamil's statement came amid pressure from six major business groups urging the government to delay the implementation of the SST changes, particularly the 8% levy on commercial rental and leasing services set to take effect on July 1. In a joint statement, the SME Association of Malaysia, Malaysia Retail Chain Association, Malaysia Retailers Association, Federation of Malaysia Business Associations, Bumiputra Retailers Organisation Malaysia and Malaysia Shopping Malls Association warned that the tax could severely cripple businesses already facing escalating costs. They described the timing and scale of the new tax as 'gravely misguided' and warned it would trigger inflation, shrink consumer spending, discourage investment and threaten the survival of many small and medium enterprises (SMEs). — TMR
