Dialling two numbers can get 999 help without speaking

Police say it will alert emergency call handlers that your call is genuine but you are unable to speak Police are urging everyone to know two numbers that can get them out of danger without saying a word. Last month, Cambridgeshire Police alone had 40 silent 999 calls where they were needed to attend urgently. However many people do not realise that just saying nothing when you dial 999 will not automatically get you the help you might need. Instead there is a two digit number you should dial when prompted that will mean help will be on its way. ‌ Posting on Facebook Cambridgeshire Constabulary said: "You know the get home after a long day, close your door, turn the key - you're safe. However, home isn't a safe space for everyone. Behind closed doors, things can be be very different. ‌ "We had 40 silent 999 calls in May where we were needed at the scene immediately - that is more than one every single day. A lot of these calls were from people suffering domestic abuse, who couldn't say much but urgently needed our help to escape a desperate situation or confide in officers what had happened to them." It added: "Do you know? Pressing 55 after calling 999 lets police operators know that you need help but are in a situation where you can't talk. Tapping in 55 lets the 999 operator know your call is genuine, and they will try to track your location. "If you can't speak, listen carefully to the questions and instructions from our demand hub call agents so they can assess your call and arrange help." It adds people can get more help via the force website. The call comes after a previous campaign by the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) which urged people to be aware of the Silent Solution system. Figures from the time showed around 20,000 silent 999 calls (where no response is obtained to questions) are made a day. Of those, around 5,000 are transferred to the Silent Solution system because doubt whether the call is genuine exists. The 55 instruction is detected around 50 times a day (1 per cent of all silent calls put through to the system). ‌ It advised: "The Silent Solution system enables a 999 mobile caller who is too scared to make a noise, or speak, to press 55 when prompted – to inform police they are in a genuine emergency. "The system is well-established in the UK but is only effective if the public know and understand how it works. It could, in extreme situations, potentially save a life." It warned at the time: "It is not true that police will automatically attend if you make a silent 999 call. Callers need to listen and respond to questions and instructions, including by coughing or tapping the handset if possible, or if using a mobile phone, once prompted by the automated Silent Solution system, pressing 55. "The system filters out thousands of accidental or hoax silent 999 calls made daily. Around 50 emergency calls from mobiles a day are transferred by a BT operator to police forces in the UK as a result of someone having pressed 55 when prompted, enabling the police to carry out urgent enquiries to respond." Then IOPC Regional Director Catrin Evans said: 'It is always best to actually speak to a police call handler if you can, even if by whispering, but if you are putting yourself or someone else in danger by making a sound, there is something you can do. Make yourself heard by coughing, tapping the handset or once prompted by the automated system, by pressing 55."

Armed robbery at Brunswick T.J. Maxx leads to gunfire and car chase

The Glynn County Police Department arrested a man after an armed robbery-turned car chase in Brunswick. Officials said the suspect, Shannon Turner, brandished a gun at a cashier at a local T.J. Maxx and handed them a note on Sunday demanding money. He reportedly left the store with $980. GCPD said its officers managed to locate the suspect's car Monday morning around 11:39 A.M near the intersection of Highway 99 and Golden Isles Parkway. When one officer approached, GCPD said Turner appeared to accelerate directly at the police vehicle, leading the officer to fire a shot at the car. >>> STREAM ACTION NEWS JAX LIVE <<< [DOWNLOAD: Free Action News Jax app for alerts as news breaks] No one was hit by the bullet, and Tanner drove off, leading to a car chase that lasted 'several minutes,' according to police. The chase ended when Tanner crashed the car on I-95 south near mile marker 35. He was taken into custody and taken to a hospital for injuries. Because the officer fired a gun, GBI and GCPD are now conducting an investigation to make sure it was warranted and that the officer followed department policy. Anyone with information on this case is asked to contact the Glynn County Police Department at (912) 554-3645 or anonymously via Silent Witness at (912) 264-1333. Selma Blair reveals she's in remission from MS

The actress was speaking at The Daily Front Row's 9th Annual Fashion Los Angeles Awards on Thursday. Selma, 52, told People: 'I am doing amazingly well. I've been feeling great for about a year,' at the event held at the Beverly Hills Hotel. She added: 'But I am finally well enough to really, genuinely ... 'I think maybe since the diagnosis,' she explained when asked what she meant. 'You're just tired all the time. I spent so much of my life so tired from being unwell that I think I just was trying to get through the day.' Blair continued: 'And now it's like, wait, I realize I don't know what my goals are.' She went on to say that her thoughts are 'much more career-oriented' these days and said she'd love to get back into acting and that is something she is actively working on. In January, Variety reported that Blair has three upcoming movies going into production: Stay Forte, a drama about the Israel-Hamas war; a supernatural thriller called Silent; and a twin drama There There. 'I started feeling really better this last year and I'm back at work and doing things, so I will have things to announce,' she said at the time. Selma also wants to help other people navigate their chronic illnesses and reminding them to dream and set goals for the future, even when they are unsure if they will have a future or not. 'I still am advocating for people with chronic illness and getting better, and what that looks like when you haven't made your wishes. How do we give ourselves a new life force?' she asked People. Selma attended the event in archival Betsey Johnson to present the iconic designer with a Lifetime Achievement Award.
