‘Sitaare Zameen Par' director RS Prasanna breaks silence on remake talk: 'The film will have the answers'
After an eight-year break from directing, RS Prasanna is back with 'Sitaare Zameen Par', a film that blends sports drama with heartwarming emotion. Best known for his 2017 film 'Shubh Mangal Savdhaan', which dealt with erectile dysfunction in a light-hearted and sensitive way, Prasanna now turns his lens toward a new challenge: a grumpy basketball coach training a team of kids with special needs. Not worried about remake talk The trailer for 'Sitaare Zameen Par' came out over a month ago and was loved by many for its touching story and Aamir Khan 's performance. Sitaare Zameen Par director RS Prasanna isn't fazed by remake chatter around Aamir Khan film: Film will have the answers
Filmmaker RS Prasanna is returning to the big screen after an eight-year gap. His last release was Shubh Mangal Savdhaan back in 2017. The filmmaker has moved from telling the story of a man with erectile dysfunction to narrating the tale of an angry basketball coach training a team of special needs kids. His upcoming film, Sitaare Zameen Par, stars Aamir Khan in the lead, along with Genelia D'Souza and ten newcomers. A few, however, pointed out that the trailer was very similar to Hollywood film Champions, and the Spanish film Campeones, which inspired it. But the chatter around the remake and copy jibes does not bother Prasanna. "I just feel the film will have the answers. It is best for the director to talk through the film. As far as I am concerned, there is so much love for the film. I am consumed by that," he tells HT. Actor Aamir Khan is known and celebrated for being a perfectionist in the film industry. However, for director RS Prasanna, who has helmed his latest film 'Sitaare Zameen Par', it's 'magic' that he's after, more than perfectionism. In an exclusive interview with the director spoke at length about Aamir's style of filmmaking, and his passion as a creative who earlier directed 'Shubh Mangal Savdhaan', shared that Aamir's brilliance lies in the way he looks at a film as a wholesome project, and not in the capacity of an actor or a producer. When asked how he would define the filmmaking style of the 60-year-old, Prasanna said, "Well, the perfectionist tag of Mr Aamir Khan, I think, requires an updated version. He may be one of the three Khans who have ruled Bollywood for over three decades, but Aamir Khan has one of the most mysterious auras among Bollywood stars. From his public appearances in flip-flops to his willingness to be interviewed often, Aamir is someone who refuses to accept his superstardom at every turn. RS Prasanna, the director of his next film, Sitaare Zameen Par, says this makes the actor endearing and easy to work with. In a no-holds-barred chat about the actor and the film, Prasanna opens up on the making the film, expectations from it, and more. He says that a potential collaboration with Aamir Khan began soon after. "Shamath (Mazumdar), his manager, reached out to me after Shubh Mangal Saavdhan. I was playing with my kids in Chennai, and I got a call from this guy saying, 'I am calling from AKPL,' and somehow that AKPL didn't stick. As a Chennai guy, I associate with Aamir Khan Productions. Later on, when he said Aamir Khan, I wondered 'ye Aamir Khan ke baare me kyun baat kar raha hai'. When I asked, he specified, and it hit me," says the filmmaker with a laugh. Eventually, he began developing the script of Sitaare Zameen Par, the official Hindi adaptation of Campeones, and things fell into place. Prasanna felt that the coach could only be played by Aamir. "Then I went into a deep sorrow. What if he says no? Unfortunately, I couldn't think of anybody else in the role," he says. But Aamir said yes to the film, and the filming began. Prasanna describes Aamir as a combination of actor, superstar, and producer. But in any role, the star is someone who shrugs off praise and wants to avoid stardom. Prasanna shares, "The most surprising thing about Aamir sir is that he is a legend who behaves like a newcomer, and you have newcomers who behave like legends. For me, it was just like how I connected with Ayush (Ayushmann Khurrana) and Bhumi (Pednekar). I was a first-time director (in Shubh Mangal Savdhaan), and they made me feel comfortable. The same is with Aamir sir." Talking about Aamir's reluctance to be a star on screen, the filmmaker says, "Sometimes, I have to remind him, 'You are a superstar; people want to watch your film.' But he won't let me do any fan service in the film. For him, only the film and the story matter. He doesn't matter." Sitaare Zameen Par is a spiritual sequel to Aamir's 2007 film, Taare Zameen Par. To this, the director recalled saying, 'I said sir ye to bahut interesting hai, kyuki aap jab movie dekhoge to usme lot of nuances hai and it's a very tough role to play, which she has done very well. I think Genelia ke andar itna life hai itna positivity hai itna joy hai she lights up the screen. It was a delight working with her.' This film is set to hit theatres on June 20, 2025.
