Misogynistic attacks on Nicola Sturgeon lead to real threats, warns Kate Forbes

Speaking at the Scotland 2050 conference in Edinburgh on Tuesday, Kate Forbes addressed what she called 'abhorrent' comments from Everett, who is known for roles in hit movies such as Shrek 2 and Napoleon. In an interview with The Herald, the actor – who moved to Scotland when he was 18 to work at the Citizens Theatre in Glasgow – called the former first minister 'a witch' when discussing the record of the SNP with the arts. 'As soon as the witch Sturgeon came into power, everything changed in Scottish arts and everything had to be about being Scottish,' he said. READ MORE: Hate crime figures fall but disability attacks reach record high The former first minister branded Everett's comments 'deeply misogynistic', and Forbes was asked about them on Tuesday while speaking on a panel about women in public life. 'The problem is that these accusations, these criticisms, are so often tinged with misogynistic language. 'Whether it's women making or men making it, it is reflective of the deep-seated nature of misogynistic language and the fact that politics has gone from an exchange of views to just personal attacks, devoid of policy scrutiny. 'It's abhorrent. It's despicable. 'What's remarkable is that we've now been talking about this for at least six or seven years and it's only got worse in that time.' Forbes said that any post she made on Twitter or Facebook would see replies full of 'reels of the stuff'. (Image: Jane Barlow/PA Wire) 'It's only when somebody who should know better makes comments like that, that suddenly we all say, 'well, that's not acceptable'. But this is going on constantly. It is exhausting. 'It is totally misogynistic and whether it's men making it or women making it, the point stands that it is saturated with misogynistic language, and I think that the destructive nature of social media cannot be understated. I think it is going to transform our politics for a generation. 'It's going to transform, totally change, the type of people that are in politics for a generation, and it's particularly affecting young women.' The Deputy First Minister later said that she 'almost never' speaks publicly about the abuse she faces on social media – or the threats in real life – because she fears it will put other women off entering politics. She told the Scotland 2050 conference that the misogynistic attacks on social media were not isolated, online incidents. 'It's not just what happens online, sticks and stones and all that,' she said. 'The problem is that this spills over into the real world. 'I know myself, I'm fairly short and small, and if I have people that were once accusing me of all sorts of things on social media, then turning up to surgeries – as they have done. There's certainly been enough press coverage of threats that have been made around actual means of hurting me, it spills over into that. 'We all say, well, 'isn't it dreadful, we need to do something about social media'. 'It's just going to be a cycle until there is an intervention, that something disrupts the cycle, and we as a country – and as I suppose those of us who participate in the public square – decide to take a different approach.'

Nicola Sturgeon blasts 'deeply misogynistic' Hollywood star after 'witch' jibe

The former SNP First Minister hit out at comments by Rupert Everett. Nicola Sturgeon has dismissed a Hollywood star as 'deeply misogynistic' after he branded her a 'witch' who had spoiled the arts in Scotland. The former First Minister also said the wider point Rupert Everett made about her record was 'baseless rubbish'. ‌ Everett, whose work includes My Best Friend's Wedding and providing the voice of Prince Charming in Shrek 2 and Shrek the Third, criticised the SNP 's time in power. ‌ In an interview with the Herald, he contrasted the outlook of the Citizens Theatre in Glasgow in previous decades to the arts under the Nationalist Government. The 66 year old said: 'It was a European theatre in the same vein as Peter Stein, Pina Bauch. It was a national European theatre. And unlike those theatres, it never ran at a loss. It presented an uncompromising array of work to people that it never patronised. 'As soon as the witch Sturgeon came into power everything changed in Scottish arts and everything had to be about being Scottish." 'In the whole United Kingdom there was nothing like that theatre. It was one of the most extraordinary cultural events I think in the British scene postwar, frankly.' Sturgeon, the country's longest-serving First Minister, hit back: "What is it with [some] men who can't disagree with a woman without resorting to deeply misogynistic tropes? His substantive point is baseless rubbish too.' ‌ In May, Sturgeon said her support for trans rights had seen her endure more sexism than on any other issue. She said: 'Many of those who are on the other side [of the issue] say it is all about protecting women.' 'Isn't it ironic that I have probably had more misogynistic abuse as a result of this issue than on any other issue in my entire political career. Go figure.' ‌ This is a breaking news story - we'll bring you updates, pictures and video as it happens. JoJo Siwa and Chris Hughes spend day in bed after very romantic reunion

JoJo Siwa was greeted by a bouquet of red roses by Chris Hughes at Heathrow Airport and clearly adored seeing her mum and Chris Hughes had the perfect surprise for JoJo Siwa as he welcomed at London's Heathrow Airport with a bouquet of red roses. The couple passionately embraced and appeared delighted to see one another after her stint in LA. Wearing a turquoise hoodie and baseball cap, Chris curled an arm around JoJo as he handed her the flowers and the pair made their way out of the airport. ‌ JoJo, 22, also posted about their reunion, sharing a video of Chris, 32, and her mum Jessalyn and captioning it: "My entire [heart]." As she watched them chatting, she was heard saying: "God, that makes my heart happy." ‌ Later, Chris offered a glimpse into their Sunday at home, pizzas perched on the coffee table as they watched Shrek 2. Chris captioned the photo: "Perfect Sunday." In another snap, the pair were in bed as Chris balanced a mug of tea on his knees with a dairy milk and chocolate pot. And it appears Chris would have appreciated more time in bed, sharing a photo of himself in the car this morning at 06.52 as he wrote: "Just another 30 minutes would have been golden." JoJo also had an early start as she shared a video of herself getting ready ahead of a press day in London. "It is very early here in London, but it is also very very early back in good old America, baby," she said. "Today feels so strange because it's a show day but it doesn't feel like it at all." She later appeared on ITV's Lorraine as she was quizzed by host Andi Peters on whether she and Chris have had the 'exclusive' chat like they do on Love Island. Laughing, JoJo replied: "Chris and I have had a lot of chats. We've never gone into the kitchen and the head is turning, we've never had that version. He's the best man." Further quizzed on what was going on, she said: "It's so funny To me. It's so funny how straight up people are." Revealing that he had gifted her roses, she said: "They were discount flowers. There's this adorable clip of him, peeling off the sticker... What's even better now, everyone deserves to know, the flowers exist in a blender bottle. He's the best." ‌ It comes after the couple finally confirmed their romance last week after they were spotted locking lips while playing around in the pool at an adults-only Mexican hotel. Chris could be seen smiling from ear-to-ear as he locked lips with JoJo as the Dance Moms star straddled him while sitting on an inflatable bed in the water. Fans had been speculating if there is something more to their friendship for weeks – ever since they grew close in the Celebrity Big Brother house last month. Romance speculation was further fuelled when JoJo dumped her partner Kath Ebbs hours after leaving the CBB house. However, in their first joint interview after leaving the house, JoJo insisted things were platonic between the pair. ‌ While in the iconic house, JoJo was in a relationship with her partner of seven-months, Kath Ebbs. However, after growing so close to Chris, JoJo called it quits on the romance and drumped Australian Kath, 27, at the wrap party for the ITV show. Since then, both Chris and JoJo have continued to fuel the rumour mill with loved-up and cosy photos together. Chris jetted on a 12-hour flight to Mexico to watch JoJo perform live during her current tour and was in Orlando, Florida, in a bid to spent more time with his former housemate. ‌ The reality TV duo appeared on Access Hollywood alongside presenters Mario Lopez and Kit Hoover where they addressed their 'evolving relationship'. However, things took an awkward turn when Chris became flushed and 'speechless' when asked about the status of his relationship with JoJo, who is 11 years his junior. "I didn't know anything about JoJo, and likewise when we first got into the house, but I think when you're in an environment like that - you're literally stuck in a house, you don't know anything about what's going on in the outside world, there's no phones and no connection with anyone - we formed our own connection. "We bonded with each other and warmed to one another and we just had so much fun," Chris said about his bond with JoJo. When asked how they would describe and define the connection, JoJo gushed: "You kind of can't define it, it's very special." To which Chris agreed: "Yeah, I would struggle to describe it. If you want adjectives, I'd go for....." C hris then started to stutter and became visibly awkward before laughing it off and saying: "Oh.... why am I speechless. What is going on. God."

18 Hidden Easter Eggs From DreamWorks Animated Movies That You Probably Missed The First Time

DreamWorks has a way of planting little details we often miss...I mean, the Easter eggs aren't just for Disney! But I bet you were too into the movies to even notice them. Fortunately for you, I picked up on them and these are the 18 that I noticed in particular: 1. Roxanne's dress color changes throughout Megamind. 2. In Penguins of Madagascar, Dave is seen drinking clam juice when the North Wind breaks into his submarine. Clams are actually known to be one of octopuses' main source of food. 3. The prison floor in Kung Fu Panda 2 resembles the Yin Yang symbol. 4. In the opening scene in Flushed Away, Roddy pulls out Wallace's outfit from the Wallace and Gromit series. 5. In that same scene, Roddy also pulls out a Wolverine outfit. Hugh Jackman, the voice of Roddy, also plays Wolverine in the Marvel films. 7. In Shrek 2, one of the potion bottles the workers put on a conveyor belt in Fairy Godmother's factory is marked "Fiagra"— a play on "Viagra." DreamWorks Animation 8. In Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa, Mort mimics the airplane wing walker from the Twilight Zone episode "Nightmare at 20,000 Feet." 9. When Puss first attacks Shrek in Shrek 2, he carves a "P" into the tree. 11. Plushes of Alex from Madagascar and Gromit can be seen in the little girl's bedroom in Flushed Away. DreamWorks Animation/Aardman Animation 12. In Shrek 2, the Big Bad Wolf is found reading a magazine called Pork Illustrated, a parody of Sports Illustrated. DreamWorks Animation 13. The monsters in Monsters vs. Aliens are all nods to classic monster movies. DreamWorks Animation Ginormica is a reference to Attack of the 50-Foot Woman, B.O.B. is a reference to The Blob, the Missing Link is a reference to Creature from the Black Lagoon, Dr. Cockroach Ph.D. is a reference to The Fly, and Insectosaurus is a reference to Mothra. 14. Mason and Phil from Madagascar make a cameo appearance on a newspaper in Turbo. DreamWorks Animation 15. In The Road to El Dorado, Tzekel-Kan's sacred book contains a picture of the DreamWorks logo. DreamWorks Animation 16. In Flushed Away, Roddy slides past various DreamWorks DVDs (how many can you spot?). DreamWorks Animation/Aardman Animation 17. General W.R. Monger wears a Shrek badge in Monsters vs. Aliens. DreamWorks Animation 18. And finally, during the DreamWorks logo in How to Train Your Dragon, Toothless can be seen flying in the sky in the background.
