A new Trader Joe's store is baffling customers...'like a glitch in the matrix'

Trader Joe's customers were confused after a new California location opened right across the street from another. A new store opened at 14140 Riverside Drive in Sherman Oaks, Los Angeles, on June 6. However there was already an existing Trader Joe's location only about 100 yards away - at 14119 Riverside Drive. 'Maybe we are living in a simulation, because that seems like a glitch in the matrix,' a TikTok user commented on a video of the two stores posted by ShavsPaper. One TikToker claimed that the original store is one of the busiest in the state, so the retailer is testing the two spots. Another claimed the opening of the new store was delayed, so the chain had to re-sign the lease for the old location. Trader Joe's has not confirmed the reason, but the chain is planning to operate both of them. 'We've had a great relationship with our customers in Sherman Oaks for 52 years, and we plan to keep both stores open,' Trader Joe's spokesperson Nakia Rohde told Many shoppers 'don't see the problem' with two stores and believe multiple locations are a 'win-win' when looking for popular items like its viral mini tote bags. L.A. in a Minute host Evan Lovett had nothing but good things to say about the new location last week in a TikTok video. 'It's modern, it's spacious, it's got an expanded freezer and refrigerated section. It's a great store,' he said. Lovett also pointed out that it has a separate parking garage, unlike the other Riverside Drive store. 'The smaller Trader Joe's wasn't crowded and all the stuff was in there. I parked with no issue for the first time ever on a Sunday,' a shopper claimed on TikTok. A few shoppers insisted the older location is superior even though it makes some customers feel 'claustrophobic.' 'Who wants to park your car in a garage that you need a ticket for?! Then get into a small elevator! Just wait until it gets crowded w/all those new apartments in that complex!,' a person commented. 'H*** no, I won't go. The old one is fantastic: You get in and out in minutes, and the staff is fantastic,' another shopper responded. Others insisted they would visit the new store when they had a chance but would continue visiting the other one now that it will be 'mostly empty.' Trader Joe's popularity has skyrocketed in recent years The grocery store is known for its miniature tote bags which went viral Founded in 1967, Trader Joe's has become a supermarket empire in the US operating about 600 locations. The chain made headlines last year after its tote bags became the talk of TikTok. Shoppers began reselling its Mini Insulated Totes for $100 on eBay, and customers would line up around the block just to get their hands on the $3 bags. Trader Joe's brings back bags from time to time, and shoppers were in a frenzy last March after its $4 collapsible totes returned to stores. The chain is in the process of opening nearly two dozen locations across 13 states, the first bunch launching a few months ago. As of now, the latest Trader Joe's location opened last week in Tracy, Georgia. The only states that don't house a Trader Joe's are Alaska, Hawaii, Mississippi, Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, West Virginia and Wyoming.

Trader Joe's Newest Location Leaves Shoppers in Disbelief

As of April 2025, Trader Joe's had 581 store locations in 42 different states and a plan to open two dozen more stores. The only states that Trader Joe's isn't in as of 2025 are Alaska, Hawaii, Mississippi, Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, West Virginia and Wyoming. California is ripe with Trader Joe's locations all throughout the state, and the April release showed that five locations opened in California alone. One of them was at 14140 Riverside Dr. in Sherman Oaks, in Southern California. But, oddly enough, there is another Trader Joe's across the street from this new location with a store at 14119 Riverside Drive. Yes, Trader Joe's opened a brand-new location despite having one right across the street. One TikTok user, ShavsPaper, posted a video discussing the new location in a clip that has circulated quite a bit. In turn, some were puzzled at the decision to build a new location so close to another store. "I would be eye-balling each parking lot trying to decide which is the least busiest in the moment every single time. People don't need even one more decision in their day. Why TJs, why?" one user replied. "Omg I saw this was happening recently and was like …. Wait what LOL" another wrote. "i feel like it's illegal to have the same store within a certain range of each other. But lowkey trader joe's might've found a land loophole from the looks of it," another stated. "Wait lol. They're both open at the same time," another stated. Others were also upset that Sherman Oaks has two while other cities don't have even one location. "While other cities are literally begging for one," one user wrote. "I can't even get one in my area," wrote another. The city of Sherman Oaks has a population of just over 68,000 and is right in the San Fernando Valley, so it's quite the move to open one right across the Joe's Newest Location Leaves Shoppers in Disbelief first appeared on Men's Journal on Jun 16, 2025

Renée Victor, the voice of no-nonsense Abuelita in 'Coco,' dies at 86

Renée Victor, who voiced the no-nonsense, sandal-throwing Abuelita in Disney's animated hit 'Coco' and played the wisecracking Lupita on Showtime's 'Weeds,' has died. She was 86. Victor's death was confirmed on Monday by a representative, Julie Smith, who said the actor had lymphoma for several years. She died Friday at her home in Sherman Oaks, California, Smith said, with family by her side. A post on the Instagram feed of Pixar, which produced ' Coco,' said: 'We are heartbroken to hear of the passing of Renée Victor, the voice (of) Abuelita in 'Coco' and an incredible part of the Pixar family. We will always remember you.' Victor appeared in 22 episodes of 'Weeds' as sassy housekeeper Lupita between 2005 and 2012, among many other TV credits including 'ER,' 'Matlock' and 'The Addams Family.' But she was perhaps best known for what she called the chancla-throwing grandmother in 'Coco,' the 2017 family-friendly movie that explored death through the journey of a young Mexican boy to the land of the dead. 'I play the part of 'Abuelita,' the chancla throwing grandma that preaches 'No Music!'' she wrote on Instagram, looking back several years ago. 'Enjoy 'Coco' with your family this Dia de los Muertos and forever more!' She also looked back at 'The Apostle,' the 1997 movie that Robert Duvall wrote, directed and starred in. 'He took a chance on me with this film,' Victor wrote on Instagram. 'This is where I got my nickname 'one take Renée,'' she said, adding laughter emojis. 'I had a small role but what a great one! Can somebody give me an amen?!' Born in San Antonio, Texas, on July 25, 1938, Victor began her performing career as a singer and dancer. She moved to Los Angeles in the 1960s, according to biography material provided by her representatives, where she launched her career singing with prominent big band leaders Xavier Cugat and Pérez Prado. She also taught Latin dancing, including the salsa and tango. She met her future husband, Ray, during that period, and from 1963 to 1973, they performed together as 'Ray & Renée,' a variety show took them around the world — including Australia, where 'they enjoyed particular fame,' the materials said. In the 1970s, Victor hosted the 'Pacesetters' public affairs show on KTLA, her representatives said, and by the '80s had moved into TV and film work. Her film credits, other than 'The Apostle,' included the 2014 horror film 'Paranormal Activity 5: The Marked Ones,' 'The Doctor' with William Hurt (1991), and 'A Night in Old Mexico' (2013), also with Duvall. In 2004, she had a recurring role as Florina Lopez on TV's 'ER,' and the following year was cast in 'Weeds.' Other series credits included 'Snowpiercer' (2020-2021), 'Mayans M.C.' (2022), 'Dead to Me' (2020-2022), and Amazon's 'With Love' (2021-2023). Victor is survived by her daughters, Raquel and Margo Victor, Smith said.

Disney fans all over the world are mourning the death of Renée Victor, who most famously voiced the character Abuelita in Disney's heartwarming — and, at times, heartwrenching — animated film, Coco. Per a statement to Deadline, Victor died surrounded by family in Sherman Oaks, California, on Thursday, May 30. The actress, who had lymphoma, was 86 years old at the time of her passing. "Renee is perhaps best known as the voice of 'Abuelita' in Disney's 2017 blockbuster Coco,' her daughters Raquel and Margo said in part in a statement at the time. 'Renee was loved by so many & had fans all over the world. Her memory will be cherished by all who knew her.' In addition to lending her voice to the 2017 Disney animated blockbuster Coco, she was also famous for her character Lupita on 22 episodes of Weeds. Victor also had recurring roles on Snowpiercer, Dead to Me, and With Love. As for her most famous film, Victor voiced Miguel's (Anthony Gonzalez) grandmother, daughter of the titular character Mama Coco — Miguel's great-grandmother. Though Abuelita is a loving and doting grandmother to her family, she also has a strict rule in the household: no music, even going as far as to smash Miguel's guitar. The "no music" policy has been passed down from Abuelita's own grandmother (Mama Coco's mom Imelda), after Imelda's musician husband left her and Coco to continue his music career. Fans shared their heartbreak at Victor's passing. "Renée Victor brought heart, soul, and strength to every role — especially as Abuelita in Coco," one person praised on X (formerly known as Twitter). "Her voice echoed through generations, reminding us of love, tradition, and family. Rest in peace." "Thank you for giving us Abuelita," another fan wrote. "Rest in peace, Renée Victor. Your voice lives on in our hearts." A third supporter referenced the Miguel's Day of the Dead adventure, in which he reunited with his relatives who had passed on. "Abuelita is now in the Land of the Dead with Mama Coco, Mama Imelda, Papa Hector and the rest of her familia's relatives," they penned. "But we always remember the good times."
