Derry City end winless run with Shelbourne win
Derry City moved up to fourth position in the League of Ireland Premier Division table as they defeat Shelbourne 1-0 at Tolka Duffy scored the only goal of the game on 55 minutes with a stunning strike from the edge of the Lynch's men had to withhold a late spell of pressure from the defending Premier Division champions to clinch a crucial three points. The result puts an end to Derry's four game winless run and is the Candystripes' first league victory at Tolka Park in more than two years. Winger Duffy's glorious second half finish was no more than Tiernan Lynch's side deserved as they avenged their opening-night defeat to the champions in Drumcondra. Shelbourne can have few complaints as Derry leapfrog them up to fourth place in the table having controlled the pattern of the game for an hour, Damien Duff's Reds only really coming alive after they had fallen behind. In stiflingly warm conditions, with the temperature registering 24 degrees at kick-off, Shelbourne began brightly as they initially took the game to their visitors. Despite their possession though, Derry weren't really hurting Shelbourne, who seemed content to sit off and play on the counter. A break for Kearns needing attention allowed Duff the opportunity to give his players a talking to on the sideline. And the reset almost brought a reward on 36 minutes as Shels carved Derry open for the only time in a frustrating first half for the home side. Duff withdrew Martin and Kerr McInroy at half-time with Mipo Odubeko and Ellis Chapman introduced in the hope of enlivening his side. Derry immediately broke with Winchester's sweeping pass, finding Duffy on the right. A clever step-over wronged footed Kameron Ledwidge to allow Duffy get the ball onto his left foot and find the far top corner with a sublime curling shot for his seventh goal of the season. Though Shelbourne owned much of the ball for the remainder of the game, Maher scarcely had a save to make as Derry had done more than enough to take home the points. Elsewhere, Michael Noonan scored twice as bang in-form Shamrock Rovers beat Cork City 4-1 in a top-versus-bottom clash at Tallaght Stadium to register their eighth win in nine games to stretch their lead to 11 points. A Douglas James-Taylor goal gave Drogheda Untied a 1-0 home win against Sligo Rovers as they regained second place in the table. St Patrick's Athletic's worries continued as they were beaten 3-1 at Galway United while Bohemians' good run ended with a 2-1 defeat to Waterford at the RSC. Michael Duffy's bit of magic helps Derry City end a long wait
Duffy's seventh goal of the season was worthy of winning any game as he curled an unstoppable left-footed effort past Conor Kearns and into the top corner to earn Tiernan Lynch his first win in Dublin. The goal also got Derry back on track after a difficult spell, with this their first win in five League games. The visitors could have scored twice in the opening 10 minutes with Liam Boyce at the heart of each opportunity. There seemed no danger when Duffy dispossessed Jonathan Lunney near the halfway line, but Boyce spotted Kearns well off his goal line and went for it from 40 yards, with his effort beating the Shels goalkeeper but just flying wide of the open goal. Not even 60 seconds later, Boyce beat Kearns again after being put through on goal by Gavin Whyte. The striker raced through and brilliantly dinked the ball over the goalkeeper, but while the idea was right, the finish was lacking and it bobbled across the face of goal and wide. It was a chance Boyce should have taken. Shelbourne responded to those scares by coming close themselves at the other end when Harry Wood's corner was met with a powerful header from Sean Boyd, but his effort just flew over with Brain Maher beaten. It was a fairly entertaining game between two sides desperate for the points and Shelbourne should have taken the lead in the final 10 minutes of the half, with John Martin left in disbelief that he didn't put the ball in the net. Again Wood was at the heart of the danger for the hosts with his cross finding Paddy Barrett, who guided a header at goal with Martin attempting to guide it beyond Maher from close range, but the City goalkeeper did just enough to push the ball back onto the Shels man, with it deflecting wide for a goal kick. Derry started the second half very positively and Kearns was called into action within two minutes of the restart as he dived full stretch to push away a fierce effort from distance from Whyte. A defining 60 seconds in the game soon came to pass as a near miss at one end was followed by a goal at the other. Maher got off the hook when he came out of his penalty area and lost out to Sean Boyd, with Evan Caffrey's lobbed effort headed off the line by Kevin Holt. The Candystripes swiftly went down the other end with Duffy popping up on the right before he cut inside and curled a beautiful effort beyond Kearns and into the top corner to earn the visitors a valuable victory.
