NTT DATA Reveals GenAI Security Gaps Among C-Suite Leaders

Home » Tech Value Chain » System Integrators » NTT DATA Reveals GenAI Security Gaps Among C-Suite Leaders NTT DATA has announced the launch of its new report, 'The AI Security Balancing Act: From Risk to Innovation.' The report highlights both the opportunities and risks that artificial intelligence (AI) presents in cybersecurity. The findings come from an NTT DATA survey of more than 2,300 senior GenAI decision makers, including 1,500 C-Suite leaders across 34 countries. The report revealed a significant misalignment among executives on business goals and operational readiness for generative AI (GenAI) deployment. While CEOs and business leaders showed strong commitment to adopting GenAI, the report revealed that CISOs and operational leaders often lack the necessary guidance, clarity, and resources to fully address security risks and infrastructure challenges. Nearly all (99%) C-Suite executives plan further GenAI investments over the next two years, with 67% of CEOs preparing to make significant commitments. Similarly, 95% of CIOs and CTOs reported that GenAI has already driven or will drive increased cybersecurity investments. Improved security ranked as one of the top three business benefits realized from GenAI deployment in the past year. Despite this optimism, a disconnect remains between strategic ambitions and operational execution. Almost half (45%) of CISOs expressed negative sentiments about GenAI adoption. More than half (54%) of CISOs reported unclear internal guidelines or policies on GenAI responsibility. In contrast, only 20% of CEOs shared this concern, indicating a stark gap in executive alignment. Security teams still recognize the business value of GenAI. The report noted that 81% of senior IT security leaders who feel cautious about GenAI agree it will boost efficiency and positively impact the bottom line. NTT DATA's research also pointed to organizational readiness issues. Although 97% of CISOs identify as GenAI decision makers, 69% admit their teams lack the skills needed to work effectively with the technology. Only 38% of CISOs say their GenAI and cybersecurity strategies are aligned, compared to 51% of CEOs. The report further revealed that 72% of organizations lack formal GenAI usage policies. Additionally, just 24% of CISOs strongly agree that their organizations have a robust framework balancing risk with value creation. Legacy technology also poses challenges. A large majority (88%) of security leaders stated that outdated infrastructure significantly affects business agility and GenAI readiness. Modernizing technologies such as IoT, 5G, and edge computing were identified as essential for progress. To overcome these obstacles, 64% of CISOs prioritize co-innovation with strategic IT partners rather than relying solely on standalone AI solutions. The top criterion for security leaders when evaluating GenAI technology partners is the availability of end-to-end GenAI service offerings. Sheetal Mehta, Senior Vice President and Global Head of Cybersecurity at NTT DATA, said, 'As organizations accelerate GenAI adoption, cybersecurity must be embedded from the outset to reinforce resilience. While CEOs champion innovation, ensuring seamless collaboration between cybersecurity and business strategy is critical to mitigating emerging risks.' She added, 'A secure and scalable approach to GenAI requires proactive alignment, modern infrastructure, and trusted co-innovation to protect enterprises from emerging threats while unlocking AI's full potential.' Craig Robinson, Research Vice President, Security Services at IDC, also commented, 'Collaboration is highly valued by line-of-business leaders in their relationships with CISOs. However, disconnects remain, with gaps between the organization's desired risk posture and its current cybersecurity capabilities.' Robinson noted, 'While the use of GenAI clearly provides benefits to the enterprise, CISOs and Global Risk and Compliance leaders struggle to communicate the need for proper governance and guardrails, making alignment with business leaders essential for implementation.' Key points: 99% of C-Suite executives plan further GenAI investments; 67% of CEOs aim for significant commitments. 54% of CISOs say internal GenAI guidelines are unclear, revealing a gap with CEO perspectives. 88% of security leaders cite legacy infrastructure as a major barrier to GenAI readiness. This report emphasizes the urgent need for stronger executive alignment, modern infrastructure, and strategic partnerships to secure the future of GenAI in cybersecurity.

C-suite divisions slow GenAI adoption due to security worries

A new report from NTT DATA has highlighted a misalignment among senior executives regarding the adoption and security implications of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) in organisations globally. NTT DATA's report, "The AI Security Balancing Act: From Risk to Innovation," is based on survey responses from more than 2,300 senior GenAI decision makers, including over 1,500 C-level executives across 34 countries. The findings underscore a gap between the optimism of CEOs and the caution of Chief Information Security Officers (CISOs) concerning GenAI deployment. C-Suite perspectives The report indicates that 99% of C-Suite executives are planning to increase their GenAI investments over the next two years, with 67% of CEOs preparing for significant financial commitments. In comparison, 95% of Chief Information Officers (CIOs) and Chief Technology Officers (CTOs) report that GenAI is already influencing, or will soon drive, greater spending on cybersecurity initiatives. Improved security was named among the top three benefits realised from GenAI adoption in the past year. Despite these high expectations, a considerable number of CISOs express reservations. Nearly half (45%) of CISOs surveyed shared negative sentiments about GenAI rollouts, identifying security gaps and the challenge of modernising legacy infrastructure as primary barriers. The report also finds differences in the perception of policy clarity. More than half of CISOs (54%) stated that internal GenAI policies are unclear, compared with just 20% of CEOs. This suggests a disconnect between business leaders' strategic vision and concerns raised by operational security managers. "As organisations accelerate GenAI adoption, cybersecurity must be embedded from the outset to reinforce resilience. While CEOs champion innovation, ensuring seamless collaboration between cybersecurity and business strategy is critical to mitigating emerging risks," said Sheetal Mehta, Senior Vice President and Global Head of Cybersecurity at NTT DATA, Inc. "A secure and scalable approach to GenAI requires proactive alignment, modern infrastructure and trusted co-innovation to protect enterprises from emerging threats while unlocking AI's full potential." Operational and skills challenges The study highlights that, while 97% of CISOs consider themselves GenAI decision makers, 69% acknowledge their teams currently lack the necessary skills to work effectively with GenAI technologies. Only 38% of CISOs said their organisation's GenAI and cyber security strategies are aligned, compared with 51% of CEOs. Another area of concern identified is the absence of clearly defined policies for GenAI use within organisations. According to the survey, 72% of respondents had yet to implement a formal GenAI usage policy, and just 24% of CISOs strongly agreed their company has an adequate framework for balancing the risks and rewards of GenAI adoption. Infrastructure and technology barriers Legacy technology also poses a significant challenge to GenAI integration. The research found that 88% of security leaders believe outdated infrastructure is negatively affecting both business agility and GenAI readiness. Upgrading systems such as Internet of Things (IoT), 5G, and edge computing was identified as crucial for future progress. To address these obstacles, 64% of CISOs reported prioritising collaboration with strategic IT partners and co-innovation, rather than relying on proprietary AI solutions. When choosing GenAI technology partners, security leaders ranked end-to-end service integration as their most important selection criterion. "Collaboration is highly valued by line-of-business leaders in their relationships with CISOs. However, disconnects remain, with gaps between the organisation's desired risk posture and its current cybersecurity capabilities," said Craig Robinson, Research Vice President, Security Services at IDC. "While the use of GenAI clearly provides benefits to the enterprise, CISOs and Global Risk and Compliance leaders struggle to communicate the need for proper governance and guardrails, making alignment with business leaders essential for implementation." Survey methodology The report's data derives from a global survey of 2,300 senior GenAI decision makers. Of these respondents, 68% were C-suite executives, with the remainder comprising vice presidents, heads of department, directors, and senior managers. The research, conducted by Jigsaw Research, aimed to capture perspectives on both the opportunities and risks associated with GenAI across different regions and sectors. The report points to the need for structured governance, clarity in strategic direction, and investment in modern infrastructure to ensure successful and secure GenAI deployments in organisations.

BPL to offer free entry for cricket fans

Vadodara: Cricket-loving Barodians can enjoy the thrill of the T20 format without spending a penny, as the Baroda Cricket Association (BCA) has decided to keep entry free for the inaugural edition of the Baroda Premier League (BPL), which kicks off on Sunday at the Kotambi International Cricket Stadium. BCA treasurer Sheetal Mehta announced that no entry fee would be charged for spectators. The title trophy for the league was unveiled on Thursday in the presence of team owners, players, and BCA officials. BCA president Pranav Amin said the BPL would provide a valuable platform for local talent to shine and potentially catch the eye of national selectors. As a mark of respect for the victims of the Ahmedabad plane crash, the BCA refrained from organising an elaborate launch ceremony on Thursday. However, Devendra Surti, BCA member and head of the Cricket Hitrakshak Samiti, urged the association to consider postponing the tournament in light of the tragedy. This year's edition features five privately owned teams. Amin added that while the franchises were sold to owners for this season, the BCA may consider introducing a player auction system from the next edition if the league gains traction.
