LANGKAWI: The 45-year-old man behind a botched daylight robbery at a jewellery shop in Kuah yesterday had resorted to the desperate act in an attempt to settle mounting debts. Langkawi district police chief Assistant Commissioner Shariman Ashari said initial investigations revealed that the suspect, a father of four, was unemployed and struggling financially. "Based on our preliminary findings, the suspect carried out the robbery due to financial pressures. "He is currently jobless and burdened with significant debts. "He is married and has four children, aged between five and 16," Shariman said in a statement today. The Langkawi magistrate's court has granted police a seven-day remand order, effective today, to facilitate further investigations. Shariman said police have recovered all the stolen jewellery. In the incident, which occurred at 11.48am yesterday, the suspect, armed with a machete and chilli powder, staged a daring robbery at a gold shop on Jalan Pandak Mayah in Kuah. The man stormed into the premises and threw chilli powder at a 69-year-old employee and a 60-year-old assistant before smashing a glass display case with the machete. He then fled with jewellery estimated to be worth RM50,000. However, his escape was short-lived. Alert policemen patrolling the area swiftly apprehended the suspect near the scene, with assistance from the shop owner and several by-standers who gave chase.

LANGKAWI: The suspect who allegedly robbed a goldsmith at Jalan Pandak Mayah 5 here on Thursday (June 19) has been remanded for seven days. Langkawi OCPD Asst Comm Shariman Ashari said the application for a remand order has been granted by the Registrar of a Magistrate's Court from June 20 to 26. "Investigations revealed that the suspect acted out of desperation due to being unemployed and having a large amount of debt," he said in a statement on Friday (June 20). ACP Shariman said the stolen jewellery was recovered with the help of members of the public after it fell in front of the shop as the suspect attempted to flee. He said some of the jewellery was also seized from the suspect. He said the suspect is married and has four children aged between five and 16 years old. On Thursday,(June 19), the suspect brazenly committed a daylight robbery of the goldsmith. The suspect allegedly disabled the victims with chilli powder, and smashed the display glass with a machete and grabbed a quantity of gold jewellery in the incident that occured at about 11.48am However, his attempt to flee was cut short after members of the public nearby immediately gave chase and he was eventually subdued and arrested by policemen on patrol in the area. The case is being investigated under Sections 392 and 397 of the Penal Code for robbery and armed robbery.

'After disabling the victim with the chilli powder, the man proceeded to smash the display glass with a machete and grabbed a quantity of gold jewellery,' he said in a statement. He said the suspect was eventually subdued and arrested by policemen on patrol in the area. AC Shariman said that initial investigations revealed the stolen jewellery was worth about RM50,000 (S$15,130). He said the case is being investigated under Sections 392 and 397 of the Malaysian Penal Code for robbery and armed robbery. The suspect stormed into the premises on Jalan Pandak Mayah around 11.48am and hurled chilli powder at a 69-year-old staff and his 60-year-old shop assistant. He then smashed a glass display case with the machete and grabbed jewellery estimated to be worth RM50,000. However, his escape was short-lived. The shop owner and several members of the public gave chase, and the man was swiftly apprehended by patrolling police officers nearby. Langkawi police chief Assistant Commissioner Shariman Ashari said the man was arrested near the scene shortly after. "Preliminary investigations showed the suspect acted alone. He used chilli powder to distract and disarm the shop staff before fleeing with the stolen items," Shariman said in a statement. He added that the 45-year-old suspect is being investigated under Sections 392 and 397 of the Penal Code for armed robbery.
