Government's priority is to skill youths, provide jobs: Sharanprakash Patil
'The State government's priority is to provide skill development training to the youths in the state and provide employment to them', Minister for Medical Education and Skill Development Sharanprakash Patil has said. Addressing a press conference at K.H. Patil Government ITI in Gadag on Friday, Dr. Sharanprakash Patil said that the government was taking steps to upgrade the 120 government ITIs in the State by improving the infrastructure and upgrading the equipments. He said that in this regard ₹1,400 crore proposal had been sent to the Finance Department. Similarly ₹1,500 crore proposal had been sent for development of Karnataka German Technical Training Institutes (KGTTIs) in the State, he said. The Minister said that under the 'Yuva Nidhi' guarantee scheme 2,87,000 diploma holders had registered themselves and of them 1,90,000 youths were being given an assistance of ₹3,000 per month. These registered youths were also being provided skill development training, he said. Dr. Sharanprakash Patil said that apart from starting new technical courses through ITIs, KGTTIs, GTTCs and the government was contemplating on enhancing employment opportunities for the youths in various sectors.. Already 'job melas' were conducted at Belagavi, Kalaburagi, Sedam, Gadag, Bengaluru, and other places, he said. The Minister said that if companies came forward with their demand for candidates and the required skill sets, the government would ensure industrial linkage by bearing the expenses towards the skill development training. Upgrade skills Earlier addressing a gathering at the institute after distributing letters for apprenticeship to eligible candidates, Dr. Sharanprakash Patil called on the youths to upgrade their skills according to the changing requirements and technological advances. He called on the students to avail the government schemes in equipping themselves with different skills.

Treat patients with compassion, young doctors told
KALABURAGI Medical Education Minister Sharanprakash Patil has emphasised the need for doctors to treat all patients equally, with compassion and confidence. 'Young doctors treat every patient equally irrespective of their socioeconomic backgrounds. You should never discriminate against any patient on the grounds of their social, economic, caste or religious background. You should always prioritise service over profit, especially when it comes to caring for underprivileged patients,' Dr. Patil said. He was speaking at the Graduation Day for the 2019 MBBS batch of Gulbarga Institute of Medical Sciences (GIMS) late on Saturday. Reiterating his government's commitment to improving medical education ecosystem in the State, Dr. Patil highlighted that the State government has invested significantly in medical education and student welfare. 'Our government is spending a lot of money on medical graduates. You must give back to society. By treating patients with empathy and moral responsibility, doctors can demonstrate their social commitment. Especially those who are graduated from government medical colleges like you have a greater role to play. You must be an example for others in treating all patients equally with empathy and compassion,' he said. Noting that Karnataka produces the highest number of doctors in the country, the Minister said that Indian doctors are in high demand globally and called upon the medical professionals to get ready to meet global demand and expectations. 'The world expects hard work, skill and dedication from you. These qualities must be reflected in your medical practice,' he added. Expansion Dr. Patil also announced that 800 new medical seats will be added in Karnataka from this academic year, with five new government medical colleges being established. Pro-Chancellor of BLDE Deemed University, Vijayapura, Y.M. Jayaraj remarked that the 2019 batch holds a special place, having pursued their medical education during the COVID-19 pandemic and witnessed significant developments in the field of medicine during that challenging period. GIMS Director Umesh S.R., Medical Superintendent Shivakumar C.S., Principal Ajaykumar G., Financial Advisor Bharati and Chief Administrative Officer Pramila were also present at the event.

Minister promises to look into enhancing recurring expenses of KMCRI in Hubballi
Minister for Medical Education and Skill Development Sharanprakash Patil has said that he will take up the demand for enhancing the recurring expenses of Karnataka Medical College and Research Institute (KMCRI) with the Finance Department after verifying expenses under various heads in the past three years. Addressing a press conference in Hubballi, Dr. Patil admitted that there is pressure on KMCRI as it is the sole tertiary care unit in Kittur Karnataka catering to the healthcare needs of patients from several districts. He said that the government has already provided additional healthcare facilities at the hospital under various programmes. 'We want to ensure that every district has adequate healthcare facility and that's why it has been proposed to set up medical colleges in every district and also set up super-speciality hospitals. A government hospital will cater to the healthcare needs of the common man at affordable prices. Moreover, it is free for BPL card holders,' he said. To a query, he clarified that the entitled grants of KMCRI are being released regularly. On the issue of private practice of doctors, he said that the government has already issued a circular directing that doctors should do private practice only after 4 p.m. And, also, it has been made mandatory to register their attendance four times in a day and there will also be CCTV surveillance. 'Attendance will be checked regularly along with CCTV footage and any absenteeism will be treated seriously and penalised through cut in their salaries,' he said. 'Not responding' On the demand for establishment of an AIIMS in Raichur, the Minister said that while the issue has been raised several times, the Centre 'has not responded positively' to the proposal so far. Karnataka and Kerala are the only two States where there is no AIIMS, he said. To a query, he said that the issue of appointing a full-time director to KMCRI will be taken up soon but clarified that the acting director has all the powers of a full-time director. To another query on the lack of medicine and doctors prescribing medicine to be purchased from medical stores, he said that he will take it up during the review meeting. He clarified that writing prescriptions for outside medicine is strictly prohibited and action will be taken against in such cases. The Minister said that the government has proposed an increase of 800 undergraduate medical seats and 750 post-graduate seats for clinical courses in the government medical colleges of the State and expressed the confidence that the NMC will give its approval. Inauguration Subsequently, the Minister inaugurated the computerised laboratory, Brachytherapy (cancer therapy unit) set up at a cost of ₹2.2 crore, two modular operation theatres and a renovated outdoor stadium developed at a cost of ₹1.5 crore. Acting director of KMCRI S.F. Kammar and other senior doctors were present. He also held a review meeting later and visited the construction site of the branch of Jayadeva Institute of Cardiology which is planned to be completed in a year's time.

COMED KARES Innovation Hub inaugurated in Hubballi
Minister for Medical Education and Skill Development Sharanprakash Patil has said that as just over 10% of graduating students both at the State and national level are employable, the State government has prioritised skill development and constituted a skill council for the purpose. Inaugurating COMED KARES, the ninth Innovation Hub set up by COMED-K (Consortium of Medical, Engineering and Dental Colleges of Karnataka) in Hubballi on Tuesday, he said that the skill council comprises representatives from industry, academia and the government. Dr. Patil said that the skill council has structured various courses keeping in mind the technological advances, including Artificial Intelligence, so that graduates acquire future skills by the time they complete their respective degrees. The Minister said that unemployment is a major problem at the national level and at the State level and the government has adopted a two-pronged approach to address it. 'Under our guarantee scheme, Yuva Nidhi, we are providing allowance to 2.8 lakh unemployed youths. Of them, nearly 40% are engineering graduates. And, to make them employable, we have come up with multi-skill development centres at Koppal, Kalaburagi and Mysuru to provide hands-on training,' he said. Emphasising the need for students to acquire skills while learning, he said that the idea is to equip them with the right kind of skill-sets so that they are ready not just for India but for the world. 'If you are skilled, you will be in great demand,' he said. The Minister also said that the government is ready to collaborate with ERA Foundation and COMED-K in setting up innovation hubs at various places. Pro Vice-Chancellor of KLE Technological University (KLETU) Ashok Shettar emphasised the need for taking learning out of classrooms and making it more experiential and outcome-based. Lauding COMED-K for taking the initiative of establishing innovation hubs that aim at helping students in developing new skill-sets, he requested it to consider establishing more such centres in North Karnataka. Lauding the initiative, Hubballi-Dharwad Central MLA Mahesh Tenginakai emphasised the need for the government to implement its Beyond Bengaluru programme effectively. Chairman of COMED-K M.R. Jayaram spoke about the objective behind establishing the hubs and how they will help in making graduating students more employable. He too stressed the need for converting colleges from teaching institutions to learning institutions. CEO of ERA Foundation Muralidhar P. spoke about innovation hubs. Executive secretary S. Kumar was present. COMED KARES Hubballi will serve nine engineering colleges in the region providing students with access to cutting-edge resources and industry-relevant training. The hub is designed to bridge the gap between academia and industry by offering state-of-the-art facilities and programmes.
