1st govt proton therapy unit proposed at cancer instt

Bengaluru: The department of medical education in Karnataka on Monday announced its plan to establish the country's first govt-run proton therapy facility for cancer treatment at Kidwai Memorial Institute of Oncology (KMIO). The move came after Karnataka minister for medical education and skill development Sharan Prakash Patil, during a recent meeting with Union health minister J P Nadda in Bengaluru, submitted a proposal seeking a Rs 500 crore grant from the Centre to set up this advanced treatment facility. A premier cancer hospital of India, KMIO in Bengaluru registers 21,000 new cancer cases annually. Proton therapy-an advanced form of radiation treatment-offers superior tumour control while safeguarding critical organs near the tumour, thus reducing long-term side effects, especially in sensitive areas. "Unlike conventional radio therapy that uses high-energy gamma rays or X-rays-which can impact healthy tissues beyond the tumour-proton therapy delivers precise, targeted doses with significantly reduced collateral damage," Patil stated in his proposal.

Proton therapy centre planned at KMIO

Bengaluru: Proposing to set up a proton therapy centre at Kidwai Memorial Institute of Oncology (KMIO), the govt has sought financial assistance from the Centre. Medical education minister Sharan Prakash Patil submitted a proposal to Union health minister JP Nadda, requesting Rs 500-crore grant to establish the facility. KMIO handles over 21,000 new cancer cases annually. The proposed facility will introduce proton therapy — a targeted form of radiation treatment known for its ability to minimize damage to surrounding healthy tissues while treating tumours. "Unlike conventional radiotherapy using gamma rays or X-rays, proton therapy delivers precise radiation to the tumour site with reduced impact on nearby organs. It is estimated that over 1.2 lakh patients in India may require proton therapy by 2025. The facility at KMIO will also support referral cases from Nimhans and Indira Gandhi Institute of Child Health," Patil said in his letter.

The State Skill Development Department has launched a capacity building programme for all vertical heads and key district officers, in association with Infosys, to impart training to help improve grassroot level implementation of skill development schemes. A two-day workshop began to impart training on Thursday at Infosys's Mysuru campus. Sharan Prakash Patil, Minister for Medical Education, Skill Development, Entrepreneurship & Livelihood, inaugurated the programme through videoconferencing from the Vikasa Soudha. Dr. Patil said the workshop aims to strengthen institutional capacities of district-level officers by exposing them to best practices in leadership, skill ecosystem governance, and programme implementation. 'We are creating a collaborative environment for learning and problem solving that will improve skill development delivery at the grassroots level,' he said. The programme focuses on several key areas such as formulation of district skill development plans (DSDPs), effective convergence with central schemes and review of the Chief Minister Kalike Koushalya Yojane (CMKKY) implementation. Officials will also engage in structured deliberations on designing and rolling out CMKKY 2.0.
