Mysuru's waste to power clean energy, fuel MCC vehicles
In a major step towards sustainable waste management and clean energy production, the Mysuru City Corporation (MCC) and Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd. (BPCL) signed a memorandum of understanding on Thursday to establish a 150 tonnes per day (TPD) Compressed Biogas (CBG) plant at the Vidyaranyapuram Solid Waste Management facility. The MCC said this was Karnataka's first-ever CBG plant agreement under the Government of India's SATAT (Sustainable Alternative Towards Affordable Transportation) initiative, aimed at converting municipal wet waste into low-emission, renewable fuel. Delving on the capacity and investment, the MCC said the plant would process 150 TPD of organic wet waste with an investment of ₹60–₹66 crore. The initiative targets reduction in landfill usage — Mysuru generates more than 600 TPD of waste — curbing methane emissions, and supplying clean biogas fuel with low emission suitable for municipal vehicles and retail use. The project supports BPCL's SATAT objectives and promotes public sector collaboration for clean fuel transition. The authorities said this was a regional milestone and although similar initiatives were under way in Kochi, Thiruvananthapuram, and Kozhikode, this is the first such MoU in Karnataka, positioning Mysuru as a pioneer in green energy adoption in the State. Construction of the plant is scheduled to commence next month, with completion and commissioning expected within 24 months. MCC Commissioner Shaikh Tanveer Asif said the CBG plant was a transformative solution for Mysuru's waste and energy needs — reducing landfill load while producing clean fuel and steering the city towards zero-waste sustainability. BPCL Executive Director (Biofuels) P. Anil Kumar said under the SATAT vision, the joint venture with MCC reflected BPCL's commitment to biofuel innovation, environmental stewardship, and supporting India's green transport transition. K.S. Mruthyunjaya, Assistant Executive Engineer, MCC, and P. Anil Kumar, Executive Director — Biofuels; R. Sasi Prakash, General Manager (CBG), and others represented BPCL at the signing of the MoU.

CII launches ‘Clean Mysuru' initiative to tackle plastic pollution
The Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), Mysuru Zone, observed World Environment Day 2025 through a large-scale plastic clean-up drive along the Outer Ring Road (ORR) and other public spaces in the city on Saturday. It was part of 'Clean Mysuru' initiative on Saturday, and was aimed at removing waste and fostering environmental awareness, besides encouraging a shift towards sustainable practices among citizens and stakeholders and creating a transformative impact across the ORR and public areas. A release said the campaign mobilised volunteers, student communities, academic institutions, and NGOs. Collected waste will be processed using zero waste segregation methods and recycling units to ensure eco-friendly disposal, the release added. The organisers said the drive served as a platform to sensitise the public on the importance of reducing single-use plastics and adopting sustainable practices. The CII reinforced its commitment to positioning Mysuru as a model for sustainable urban development and embedding long-term environmental stewardship across the city's ecosystem. It submitted a memorandum to the Mysuru City Corporation (MCC) and said that to sustain momentum and deepen impact, there should be continued support from the MCC for maintenance and protection of lakes, including desilting of stormwater drains and prevention of sewage inflow. The MCC was urged to maintain the ORR and other arterial roads, identifying waste dumping hotspots. The CII sought infrastructure for waste collection and segregation in industrial and peripheral zones, so as to promote responsible waste management. Utsav Agarwal, vice-chairman of CII Mysuru Zone, emphasised the importance of collective responsibility to build a cleaner, greener, and more resilient Mysuru for future generations. MCC Commissioner Shaikh Tanveer Asif, staff members, NCC cadets from Good Sheppherd Convent, Marimallappa High School and Rotary Midtown Academy, Hootagalli, were present. An oath was administered to end the menace of plastic pollution.

Mysuru civic body collects over ₹150 crore property tax in April-May 2025
MYSURU : The Mysuru City Corporation (MCC) collected an impressive Rs 150 crore plus in property tax within the first two months of the 2025–26 financial year. The collection was boosted by a 5% rebate offered to property owners. This amount represents over 63.3% of the annual target of Rs 237 crore set for the current fiscal year, which runs from April 1, 2025, to March 31, 2026. The rebate of 5% is extended till June 30. The city has approximately 2.25 lakh registered properties, of which 1.95 lakh are revenue-generating. Spread across nine zones and 65 wards, these properties form the primary base for property tax collection, which remains MCC's single largest source of revenue alongside the water cess. In the past two fiscal years, MCC collected Rs 183.82 crore against a target of Rs 214.55 crore in 2023–24, and Rs 210.03 crore against a target of Rs 251.41 crore in 2024–25. This year, with the current momentum, MCC is on track to potentially exceed its target. Speaking to TOI, Shaikh Tanveer Asif , commissioner, Mysuru City Corporation, said: "It's a record collection in just two months." The success is a result of coordinated efforts across all nine zones. Crossing Rs 150 crore so early will significantly enhance our ability to provide improved civic amenities to Mysuru's citizens, he said. He also urged remaining property owners to take advantage of the 5% rebate, which remains available until the end of the month. "If you don't pay property tax, there is no way out. Corporation will collect tax, hence the people should not delay in paying property tax. They should make use of the five percent rebate and pay the tax at the earliest. The revenue from property tax plays a crucial role in taking up the projects within the corporation limits," the commissioner added. The MCC continues to prioritise efficient tax collection as the backbone of its financial planning and civic development strategy.
